Manchester United 3-0 Fulham
Manchester United moved five points clear at the BPL summit thanks to a thumping win over Fulham at Old Trafford.
Paul Scholes opened the scoring with his 97th Premier League goal, Dimitar Berbatov's 12th goal of the season made it two and substitute Wayne Rooney completed the rout with his first touch after a seven-match absence.
In addition, it is now 1,302 minutes and over 14 games since Edwin van der Sar conceded a top-flight goal.
However, the statistic that looks most noteworthy is 18 league titles - the same as arch rivals Liverpool. For that is what United seem increasingly likely to achieve after winning their match in hand on the Merseyside giants at a canter.
And, although they will meet more difficult opposition than Roy Hodgson's toothless bunch, it is hard to see how the Red Devils will relinquish their advantage in the remaining 13 games given they have now started scoring and no longer let any in.
If Van der Sar can keep Blackburn at bay for 89 minutes at Old Trafford on Saturday, he will eclipse the European record of Club Brugge stalwart Dany Verlinden, who went 1,390 without conceding a goal in 1990.
As expected, Rooney was named on the bench after missing seven games with a hamstring injury. However, Ryan Giggs did not even have that consolation as Sunday's man-of-the-match at Derby watched on from the stands.
And therein lies the problem for all United's rivals.
Rafael Benitez can only dream of being able to willingly leave out such stars and Chelsea are surely too far behind to have an impact no matter how aggrieved they might feel at Sir Alex Ferguson choosing his programme notes to write the Londoners off.
Although Fulham had no away wins and only three goals to their name, their results suggest an obduracy that might have caught United out. But that was not the case.
While not at their best, Ferguson's men were well on top when Mark Schwarzer offered the kind of gift not really needed but accepted all the same.
Scholes could probably bring out a DVD compilation of the goals he has scored from the training ground move that simply involves a team-mate dropping a corner into his path.
Typically, the former England star responded to Michael Carrick's invitation to shoot by launching a thunderbolt goalwards.
Schwarzer should have saved but somehow allowed the ball to squirm its way into the opposite corner.
The Australian is normally the most reliable of goalkeepers but it seemed he had been struck down by a sudden attack of nerves.
Failing to hold a Cristiano Ronaldo cross that bounced right in front of him, Schwarzer could only watch on helplessly as Berbatov steered the loose ball goalwards, only for Aaron Hughes to make the goalline clearance.
The Bulgarian was a conclusive winner next time the trio were in close proximity though. John O'Shea created the opportunity, continuing his run into the box after laying a pass off to Carrick.
Scholes provided the flick on that O'Shea toed Berbatov's way. Schwarzer and Hughes closed in, neither man made contact and the United striker gleefully tapped home.
Had Berbatov not followed Carlos Tevez in having a effort disallowed for a marginal offside decision, Fulham might as well have started making their way home at the interval.
Not that the visitors were likely to score twice against a team who last felt the sinking feeling of conceding a goal at the beginning of November.
Two brilliant passes from Scholes created a half chance for Berbatov to force Schwarzer into a good save, which at least gave the former Middlesbrough man something to cheer before his net was bulging again.
Rooney had only been on the field for two minutes after replacing Berbatov and had yet to touch the ball when Park Ji-sung let fly with a low cross-shot. He did not need a settling-in period though as he tapped home at the far post.
For a fleeting moment it looked as though Van der Sar would be picking the ball out of his own net as well, but Bobby Zamora spurned the gilt-edged opportunity.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has dismissed Chelsea's Premier League title hopes.
"The title race now is going to be between ourselves and Liverpool," Ferguson wrote in the programme for the home match against Fulham that sent the champions five points clear of Liverpool and 10 ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Why is Fergie ahead of Liverpool? Simple, look at the team above...
Last updated at 7:58 AM on 18th February 2009
Sometimes the best explanations are the simplest ones. Princess Dianadied because her driver was drunk and going too fast. The Twin Towerswere hit by Islamic terrorists, not CIA agents. The continued successof Simon Cowell and the Osbourne family is, indeed, one of theharbingers of the apocalypse.
To this list, we can add the reason Manchester United will, in alllikelihood, move five points clear of Liverpool at the top of thePremier League table by beating Fulham tonight.
They have a better team.
Now this may come as a surprise to those still looking for clues toaccount for the change in the balance of power this season. In recentmonths, many otherwise rational people have become convinced thatLiverpool have frittered away supremacy in the title race based on acombination of rogue and random factors.
Shouted down: Rafael Benitez's press conferencerant didn't help his side - but it isn't the reason Liverpool liesecond in the table.
Mind games played by Sir Alex Ferguson, the fractious contractnegotiations of Rafael Benitez, boardroom unrest at Anfield or anynumber of peripheral events are believed to have inspired ManchesterUnited to claw away at Liverpool's lead. This is good news foranalysts, commentators and headline-writers, who have had, as TheFlintstones theme tune puts it, a gay old time.
Without wishing to spoil the fun, however, it is more straightforwardthan that. Take the best Manchester United XI and the best Liverpool XIand put them together: how many of Benitez's team would get intoFerguson's? Not many. And that is why the championship is again headingfor Old Trafford.
By my reckoning, maximum four, minimum two. Split the difference, callit three. Whichever way, there is nothing here to suggest thatLiverpool can get the better of Manchester United this season, or next, without substantial upgrading in the summer.
Now, this is not a foolproof system for calculating future champions -it affords no explanation for England's failure to qualify for the 2008European Championship, for instance - but it is not a bad one.
Using it, Liverpool would be placed above Chelsea, although not by ahuge distance. Manchester United, by contrast, would dominate Chelseawith just one player (Frank Lampard) or a generous three (Lampard plusJose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole) getting into Ferguson's current team.
Assessment is made on form this season, not reputation. So while theremay have been a time when Jose Reina, Liverpool's goalkeeper, wouldhave shaded it from Edwin van der Sar, in goal for Manchester United,it is not right now when the Dutchman has beaten a long-standingBritish record for minutes without conceding a league goal, and isclosing in on the 1,390- minute European record set by Dany Verlindenof Club Brugge in Belgium in 1990.
Javier Mascherano is another who would have walked into the holdingmidfield role at any club last season, but he has been a disappointmentthis year, perhaps as a result of his exertions for Argentina duringthe Olympics.
That leaves Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard as the two Liverpoolplayers who would definitely be accommodated in the Manchester Unitedteam while, on a good day, one of Xabi Alonso or Mascherano could makethe defensive midfield and an out-of-position Jamie Carragher wouldcontend at full back. |

Tag team: Gerrard and Torres are the only Liverpool players who would definitely win a place in Ferguson's line-up.
Benitez's penchant for drama has drawn understandably negative commentas Liverpool's grip on the prize has weakened, but he cannot be heldsolely responsible. His squad deficiencies are being exposed just asManchester United's strength in depth is at its most apparent.
Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, had it right. Asked about the mindgames that famously denied Newcastle United the title in 1996, hereplied that Newcastle's defence, not Kevin Keegan's outburst on SkyTV, determined the final placings. Logical explanations get you nowherein the pantomime that is the Premier League, though, so instead wewaste valuable time analysing pronouncements from Old Trafford, andtheir effect, at the expense of crediting what is arguably the finestsquad of footballers assembled by an English club.
There has never been a group like the one at Manchester United. GaryNeville versus Wes Brown versus Rafael da Silva, and that is just forthe right back spot. Wayne Rooney versus Dimitar Berbatov versus CarlosTevez versus Cristiano Ronaldo. Yet we ignore this and becomedistracted by Rafa's rant.
There are similarities with the collapse of England's cricket team inJamaica two weeks ago, in that several small factors might have made animpact on the cohesion of the team, but none were actually in themiddle with bat in hand.
So a certain incendiary quality around Benitez might not have helpedLiverpool at a crucial moment in the season, but this is not assignificant as a Liverpool squad that remains a work in progress andone at Manchester United that is a work of art.
So Benitez does not get on with Rick Parry, the chief executive? Big deal.
Jimmy Greaves, in wonderfully flippant mode, summed up theinconsequence of departmental relationships on the dressing room, byrecalling his time at Tottenham Hotspur. 'Most of us didn't like BillNicholson, and Bill Nicholson didn't like us,' he said. 'In fact, theonly thing we all agreed on was that we couldn't stand the board ofdirectors.'
Benitez's distance from Parry and George Gillett, one half of thepartnership of American owners, may be a problem for the long-termstability of the club and could be very damaging in the summer if heleaves, but it should not be, here and now, an issue for the playingstaff. Nor should Benitez's feelings about Ferguson's influence onEnglish football have an effect.
That press conference tirade is often cited as explanation forLiverpool's reversal of fortune, but what would the fall-out be anyway? That Liverpool players rally around Benitez in the desire to stick oneup United? They seem to have had that motivation for some while, judging by Mascherano's furious display at Old Trafford last season.
The idea that Benitez's claims put pressure on his players is alsoridiculous; as if there were previously no pressure on a Liverpool teamwith an opportunity to win its first title in the modern era. HadBenitez taken a vow of silence until the end of the season, the tensionat Anfield would still be oppressively thick.
The reality is that Liverpool are going up against a colossal group ofplayers at United and no team, not even the lavishly-assembled Chelsea, can live with them right now. They have a unique multiplicity, so eventhe understudies of understudies would get into many good teams (asMikael Silvestre did at Arsenal this season).
It is in many ways the perfect squad, because it also provides for thefuture in players such as Ben Foster, the reserve goalkeeper, and JonnyEvans, who has fitted in magnificently at centre half in the absence ofRio Ferdinand this season.
It is a sign of United's power that they could play an unconventionalcentral midfield of Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher against Chelsea andstill win comfortably. On another day it might be Michael Carrick andAnderson or Paul Scholes. If Benitez had United's squad he could rantat or fall out with who he liked: he would still win the league, asUnited almost certainly will.
Now combine the two teams, starting at the back. Both have goodkeepers, but there can be no argument that a man who has gone 1,212minutes without conceding a league goal is among the players of theseason. Van der Sar, therefore, gets the nod over Reina. He has been ona roll since emerging victorious from the penalty shoot-out at theChampions League final last season.
In control: Expect Fergie to be smiling again come May.
United have three strong right backs and the only alternative would beto overlook them all for Carragher, Benitez's defensive rock, out ofposition in a role he has occupied in key matches in Europe. This wouldbe appealing because, to put it bluntly, he is not getting into thisteam at centre half.
Those positions are reserved for Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, an earlycontender for Footballer of the Year. Ferdinand's appearances throughthe season have been restricted by injury, but Vidic has been aconstant and as a partnership they have now surpassed John Terry andRicardo Carvalho of Chelsea.
At left back, United's Patrice Evra is the best in the country at the moment, ahead of Ashley Cole, of Chelsea.
Midfield brings another Manchester United landslide with Gerrard theonly Liverpool player in a four that would comprise Ronaldo, Fletcherand Giggs. Torres would be the goalscoring spearhead, but his partnerwould be Rooney. Final total: Manchester United 8, Liverpool 3. And oneof Liverpool's three gets in with a shoe-horn.
Despite the excellent job done by Roy Hodgson, Manchester United shouldbeat Fulham tonight and, at that moment, a daunting lead will open up.Liverpool still have to go to Old Trafford, so the battle is not over, but the biggest shock of the season would be if United threw it awayfrom here.
If that were the case, there genuinely would be need for aninvestigation - into whether Ronaldo's heart was still in Manchester, whether Berbatov's arrival had unsettled the team, if Ferguson wascorrect in his treatment of Tevez.
Were Manchester United to blow it, we would all be looking behind thestory for clues. It is easier to work out what has gone wrong atLiverpool, though: the answer is right there, on the teamsheet. |
