GETAFE
Pato Abbondanzieri 6.5 - Occasionally a bit shaky but he could not be blamed at all for Madrid's goal, and his distribution was good besides.
Contra 6.0 - Started brilliantly but Madrid's renaissance after Getafe's second goal was largely down to his fading out of the game. This was partially down to injury, though. Correctly removed for Cortes.
Cata Diaz 7.5 - Trademark performance from the imposing Argentine, who was in the right place at the right time, virtually every time.
Mario 7.0 - Like Cata Diaz he was full of confidence and he played well wherever he was asked to do so.Slowly but surely proving himself as an inspired signing for El Geta.
Licht 7.0 - Although he was to tire visibly in the second period his was a showing that will be remembered fondly. Very calm on the ball.
Polanski 6.0 - Played slightly too far back at times and he also lacked a final ball when he did get forward.Not the pick of the bunch but one can't complain about his showing. Hooked for Celestini.
Casquero 6.5 - Not shy about putting in the tackle but on several occasions his long-shot ability eluded him when he's proven himself capable of better. Still, a decent showing overall.
Granero 7.5 - Some devilish runs down the right, and he's always in the right place at the right time. In the second half he played more centrally and won a boatload of absolutely vital tackles.
Gavilan 8.0 - Quite aside from his cross for Albin's opener he was a constant thorn in the side of the two Madrid right-backs, not to mention Sergio Ramos, who was often called out to double up on this wizard of a player. Although he was to tire his was still a fine showing.
Albin 9.0 - Took his first goal well and was only going to get better from there. A wonderful, clinical showing: he netted twice and set up a third, and was involved in more besides. He performs best against the bigger sides and against physical defences: thus it was tonight as in the past.
Soldado 6.5 - Was unlucky not to win a penalty late on in the first half but overall he is still playing well within himself. A million miles away from the Spanish international who did so well at Osasuna.Substitutes
Cortes 6.0 - Started well after his introduction but he wasn't quite the gadly to Drenthe that he should have been.
Uche 7.0 - Looked a bit hesitant at first but he took his goal supremely well and should really have won a penalty, too.Celestini 6.5 - Settled things down at a time when the game needed it.
REAL MADRID
Casillas 4.5 - Couldn't do anything about the first goal, which was powered past him, but committed the ultimate sin for the second goal by getting beaten at his near post. Dropped a few crosses too and unusually for him he looked very shaky throughout the match. What has happened to the man who looked for months like the world's best?
Torres 5.0 - Got lured in for the opening goal and was largely ineffective coming forward. Taken off after 34 minutes with an injury.
Ramos 4.5 - Undoubtedly at fault for the first goal as he committed himself way too early and did very little to redeem himself throughout the match. Out of position on too many occasions and overall it was a poor display by the Spaniard.
Pepe 5.5 - Showed both the good and bad side of his game tonight, illustrated by his needless booking on Saldado with just a minute to go in the first-half, and then his great last ditch tackle to deny Uche in the second. Not a bad performance but lacked the help from the rest of his defender and got away with a blatant penalty foul towards the end of the game.
Marcelo 5.5 - Did an excellent job of defending and attacking in the first-half but then went missing for much of the second-half until he was replaced by Bueno.
Gago 6.0 - Behind Drenthe he was the best player on the pitch for Real Madrid with a solid display in midfield, didn't have the support or the runs from others to make things happen though.
Sneijder 5.5 - Taken off after less than twenty minutes but wasted a couple of good opportunities to cross before he was stretchered from the pitch.
Guti 5.0 - Offered very little inspiration in his 500th game and aside from the pass he made for Saviola to score from he was poor tonight. That pass was invaluable, but it doesn't outweight the other 89 minutes, not in a game like this.
Drenthe 7.5 - Undoubtedly Real Madrid's best player in the first-half as he burst down both wings, putting in telling crosses which, unfortunately for him, no-one could convert. Continued his great display after the break but just didn't have the players around him to drag Real Madrid back into the match, nevertheless, he can hold his head up tonight.
Ra鷏 4.5 - Anonymous for much of the game but did have a great chance to level the match at 1-0 when he shot tamely at Abbondanzieri from 8 yards. Failed to convert a couple of half-chances near the end and overall it wasn't a good showing from the Spaniard.
Saviola 5.5 - Tested Abbondanzieri early on but apart from a couple of long range efforts he didn't offer a lot in the first-half. Great finish for his goal after the break but that was just about all he did in a below-par performance. At least he never let up...
Substitutes
Van der Vaart 6.0 - Instantly livened up the midfield when he came on but faded as the game went on, failing to deliver many good balls from promising positions.
Salgado 6.0 - Might be getting on now but you wouldn't know it watching him play. Ran up and down the wing all match and worked hard for the team.
Bueno 5.5 - Didn't have enough time to really change the match. |
