Wenger: Gunners can rediscover scoring touch
Arsene Wenger feels Arsenal's attacking options remain ''open'' as the Gunners look to rediscover their magic touch in front of goal.
Arsenal head into tonight's FA Cup fourth-round replay against Cardiff having found the net just once in 360 minutes of action.
It is something of an alien concept for the traditionally free-flowing Gunners.
With Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor sidelined for around three weeks because of a hamstring problem, Wenger could turn to Nicklas Bendtner to lead the attack against the Bluebirds.
However, the Arsenal manager maintains the young Denmark international, who has hit eight goals in his 31 appearances this season, nearly half of which have been as a substitute, is not the only option.
''I believe Bendtner has had plenty of opportunities this year. If you look at the number of games he has started you will be surprised,'' said Wenger.
''It is not completely decided who will play yet because we have many possibilities we can try. At the moment it is very open.''
Wenger insists the Gunners' lack of killer instinct is not a major concern and hinted he could give Croatia striker Eduardo a return to the side following a year out with a broken leg. :pompom: :pompom:
''I still don't think it is completely characteristic of our team. We are used to scoring goals and we will score goals again, don't worry,'' he said.
''At the moment it is difficult for everybody to score goals but I am convinced that if we keep working well as a team, playing well as a team, that will come back quickly.''
Arsenal may have extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches in all competitions with a battling draw against Tottenham with only 10 men, but they remain outside the top four of the Barclays Premier League.
In today's ruthless, success-driven environment, which last week cost Tony Adams his Portsmouth job and prompted Chelsea to dispense with World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari, some suggest Wenger could count himself lucky not to be under more pressure to deliver.
However, the French coach - one of the longest-serving managers in the top flight, having taken over in September 1996 before going on oversee the most successful period in Arsenal's history - maintained: ''I don't feel I have a special security.
''I believe that it is very difficult to compare someone who is there for six months to someone who has done 12 years at a club.
''There is reciprocity as well. I have shown a lot of faith in many special circumstances to the club.
''I enjoy it and I appreciate the confidence I have from this club.
''I believe it has to go both ways and you must give the club the feeling that you won't jump out at the first difficulty and you will not change the club at the first opportunity.''
New signing Andrei Arshavin is ineligible for tonight's replay, having only completed his protracted move from Zenit St Petersburg on transfer deadline day, while winger Emmanuel Eboue is suspended after his dismissal at Tottenham and midfielder Aaron Ramsey (knee) is a doubt to face the team he left in the summer following their FA Cup final defeat at Wembley.
Meanwhile, Cardiff manager Dave Jones admits FA Cup opponents Arsenal will have to be below par for his side to progress through to the fifth round.
Jones has not given up hope of a cup upset though, telling the club's website: ''The difference with playing teams of Arsenal's quality is that if we give them an opportunity they'll more than likely take it.
''Of course in cup competitions though, everyone has a chance.
''We have to hope Arsenal are not playing at their best or that they make some individual mistakes, but we've got to play our own game and play to our best abilities.''
Jones insists all the pressure is on the Gunners, but says that is a familiar feeling for Arsene Wenger's side.
''On Monday he (Wenger) is at home and has the bigger stars, bigger team and bigger football club,'' he continued.
''This means they'll be under pressure but Arsenal are under that pressure week in, week out so it'll be no different for them.''
Jones is not concerned that his players have not played a competitive match since January 31, with the cold weather forcing games against Arsenal and Charlton to be re-scheduled.
''The lads are fine,'' added Jones, whose side would face Burnley should they beat the Gunners. ''They were just disappointed the games were postponed.
''There shouldn't be any rustiness because they've kept busy. Some have been away on international duty and the others played in the friendly with Swindon the other day.''
Tom Heaton, the on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper, will come in for his first start since the end of November after Peter Enckelman was ruled out for two months with a knee injury.
Dimi Konstantopoulos, who was recently brought in on loan from Coventry, is ineligible, along with striker Michael Chopra and winger Quincy Owusu-Abeyie as the trio were all signed after the initial goalless draw between the two sides at Ninian Park.
Centre-back Gabor Gyepes and midfielder Peter Whittingham have recovered from injury as a result of the club not playing for two weeks, but former captain Stephen McPhail will miss out having sustained a knock during the midweek friendly win over Swindon.
His absence and the allowance of seven substitutes for FA Cup encounters means Riccy Scimeca should earn a place on the bench. |

''I should start every game,'' claims Bendtner
Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner believes that he should be considered the club's top striker and also said that he had not watched new signing Andrei Arshavin in action before he arrived at the Emirates Stadium.
The Dane is likely to play a prominent role for Arsene Wenger's team over thecoming weeks after Emmanuel Adebayor was ruled out with a hamstring injury, but has, once again, added to his reputation as an egotist.
Evenwithout Adebayor, Robin van Persie and Arshavin would appear to beahead of him in the Gunners' pecking order, with the returning Eduardoand Theo Walcott also staking claims for inclusion.
However, despite a meagre return of just three goals in 18 games this season,Bendtner insists he should be considered the north Londoners' bestfrontman.
''I'm very sorry to see Adebayor injured as we need him fit and to be playingin the league,'' he told the Daily Mirror. ''But it does not really matter to me who is fit and available.
''I should start every game, I should be playing every minute of every match and always be in the team.''
Hisplace is under threat from Russian striker Arshavin, who became one ofthe hottest properties in football after his brilliant performances atlast summer's European Championships with Russia.

Arsene Wenger stays loyal to Arsenal
A week after two high-profile Premier League managers were sacked, Arsene Wenger insisted that he would honour the loyalty shown by Arsenal and stay to see the job through.
Arsenal face Cardiff in a delayed FA Cup fourth round replay with a home fifth-round tie against Burnley the reward for the winners. Defeat would represent a massive blow to Arsenal, whose best chance of silverware lies in the competition.
Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams lost his job at Portsmouth after just 22 games in charge, while Luiz Felipe Scolari left Chelsea having failed to replicate the success of former manager Jose Mourinho.
"I don't feel I have a special security, I believe that it is very difficult to compare someone who is there for six months to someone who has done 12 years at a club," said Wenger.
"There is reciprocity as well, I have shown a lot of faith in many special circumstances to the club. I enjoy it and I appreciate the confidence I have from this club.
"I believe it has to go both ways and you must give the club the feeling that you won't jump out at the first difficulty and you will not change the club at the first opportunity."
Arsenal are unbeaten in 11 games but they have drawn the last four, including three goalless draws, starting with the stalemate at Ninian Park and Wenger admitted just one goal in four games is not a sequence fans are used to.
"It is completely unlike Arsenal, the circumstances are a little bit strange," he added. "We played against West Ham who you saw the other day had a very good side. We played at Cardiff which is a little bit special and then we played at Tottenham with 10 men.
"I still don't think it is completely characteristic of our team and we are used to scoring goals and we will score goals again, don't worry."
Wenger is without the injured Emmanuel Adebayor while Emmanuel Eboue is suspended. Eduardo, who was on the bench for the goalless draw at Spurs, played last week for Croatia and could feature against Cardiff. But midfielder Aaron Ramsey is a doubt to face his former club having injured a knee while away with Wales.
Another player who will not feature is new record signing Andrey Arshavin. The Russian striker is ineligible, having signed after the deadline for the fourth round, but Wenger is not concerned.
"It is a good thing for him," said Wenger. "I was a little bit handcuffed against Tottenham because we were down to 10 men and if we had sustained an injury then you couldn't bring on a player who lacks fitness when you are down to 10 men.
"In between, he will now have two weeks before the next game and hopefully will be fully fit for Sunderland next weekend."

Eduardo At The Double As Arsenal Cruise Past Cardiff City In FA Cup
A double from the returning Eduardo helped Arsenal dump Cardiff City outof the FA Cup and send the Gunners into the fifth round.
Arsenal 4-0 Cardiff City
"Dudu back in business!!!"
Having endured agoalless draw 22 days ago, Arsenal and Cardiff City met again at theEmirates Stadium aiming to book themselves a spot in the fifth round ofthe FA Cup and a date with Burnley.
Yet there was no doubt whatthe main talking point of the night was always going to be; the returnof Arsenal striker Eduardo, back in the side after a year out withinjury.
Certainly the Croatian began the game brightly, as didthe home side, and they might have been ahead as early as the fifthminute.
Bacary Sagna found space down the right and crossed forNicolas Bendtner, who had pulled off the back of Roger Johnson to findspace, but could only direct his header wide.
Moments laterand Bendtner had another opportunity, Eduardo set up Carlos Vela forthe shot which Tom Heaton parried. However, the Dane collected theloose ball but could only fire straight at the Cardiff stopper.
Evenso, Arsenal were rampant in the opening exchanges and mid-way throughthe first half they finally had their reward, and fittingly it wasEduardo who found the back of the net.
The striker began the move, bearing down on goal on the left flank before slipping a ball to the overlapping Vela.
TheMexican advanced before clipping an inviting return ball back toEduardo to head past the despairing dive of Heaton and send the homecrowd into raptures.
The Gunners continued to press and justafter the half hour mark they doubled their lead. A corner in from theright by Samir Nasri found Bendtner running off the back post, unnoticed, to head home.
Yet Bendtner really ought to have putthe game beyond the Bluebirds right on half-time. Another superbdelivery from the right by Sagna found Vela, taking a touch beforeswiveling and shooting at Heaton.
The Cardiff keeper parried theshot but only into the Dane抯 path yet with the goal gaping heconspired to hit the post before collecting the rebound and shootingstraight at Heaton who saved again and the chance went begging.
The second half continued in much the same vein and on the hour mark Arsenal finally put the game out of sight.
A scramble in the Cardiff area saw Alex Rae eventually foul Eduardo and referee Mark Halsey pointed straight to the spot.
Therewas no doubt over who would take the kick and up stepped the Croatianto send Heaton the wrong way for his second goal of the night.
Itwas to be his last telling contribution of the match as with a littleover 20 minutes to go he was substituted to wild applause, with Robinvan Persie the man coming on in his place.
The Dutchman hadthe best chances of the closing stages and finally got his goal withminutes to go with a clinical finish after good work by Bendtner.
Thestriker then almost grabbed his second of the night but he headedagainst the post in stoppage time. Yet the night belonged to Eduardoand Arsenal as Cardiff departed North London well beaten.
TheGunners, meanwhile, head onwards and upwards and now face Burnley inthe fifth round and with it, a chance to gain revenge for their LeagueCup exit at the hands of Owen Coyle抯 men.

Arsenal 4 Cardiff 0
EDUARDO roared out the perfect message on his Arsenal comeback.
The long-term injury victim netted first and last against outclassed Cardiff as the Gunners set up an FA Cup last 16 tie with Burnley.
Croatian striker Eduardo buzzed from the start in an always dominant Arsenal display.
And skipper Kolo Toure even joined his team-mates in attack early on, jinking inside two defenders and drawing a sprawling save from Tom Heaton.
The inevitable goal in thsi fourth-round replay arrived after 20 minutes.
Eduardo drove forward towards the Cardiff box, laying the ball off to Vela before continuing his run to head a hanging cross into the net.
He almost had a second moments later but Bendtner's powerful centre would not fall for the frontman, who allowed Roger Johnson to clear.
The overworked Heaton nearly gifted the hosts a second when he spilled Samir Nasri's swerving 26th-minute shot but the ball mercifully trickled wide of the post.
Cardiff battled to fight back but had neither the quality nor the possession to put their opponents under pressure.
Instead they slipped further behind, Bendtner beating two markers to head home a 32nd-minute corner.
Chris Burke engineered a Cardiff breakaway three minutes before the break with a tidy run down the right, but Arsenal defended comfortably.
Heaton then pulled off two stunning saves, kicking Vela's close-range shot away with an outstretched leg before blocking a point-blank effort from Bendtner - who had already hit the post from three yards.
Cardiff looked to be positive as the second period got under way, Bothroyd even pulling off a neat back heel.
Vela continued to catch the eye at the other end of the pitch, though, leaving Johnson dizzy with a weaving run into the Cardiff six-yard box.
To his credit, Johnson recovered to block a shot which would have caused problems at the near post.
Kieran Gibbs, starting at left-back in place of Gael Clichy, surged forward in the 55th minute and his outswinging cross needed a firm clearance by Purse.
Bothroyd finally gave Lukasz Fabianski something to do between the Arsenal posts, drawing a low save with a decent 20-yard effort.
Vela had a penalty shout turned down by referee Mark Halsey after 57 minutes but Eduardo's appeal was upheld three minutes later following a Gavin Rae foul.
Eduardo stepped up himself and slotted home calmly for his second.
The Croatia striker was given a rousing reception by the home fans when he was replaced by Van Persie in the 67th minute.
Aaron Ramsey replaced Samir Nasri at the same time, while Cardiff made a double substitution - introducing Peter Whittingham and Darcy Blake for Paul Parry and Darren Purse.
Soon after, TV pictures showed a mobile phone which appeared to have been thrown from the crowd into the Arsenal penalty area.
Van Persie underlined the Gunners' domination when he drilled home two minutes from time, |
