Lawyer who pocketed $1.7m struck off rolls
Jailed for seven years after taking clients' cash, he does not appear in court to argue against the move

CONVICTED lawyer Junaini Manin, who is serving seven years in prison for pocketing clients' funds totalling nearly $1.7 million, was ordered to be struck off the rolls yesterday.

Called to the Bar in December 1986, the 47-year-old lawyer was not in court to say why he should not be dealt with under the Legal Profession Act after being convicted of criminal breach of trust earlier this year.

Extravagant lifestyle

JUNAINI (above), who was living at The Bayshore, a condominium on the east coast, used part of his clients' money to pay for his home, three cars and credit card expenses.

He also used the funds to cover losses of more than $500,000 from businesses he ran on the side, including a car dealership, a food company, a textile company and an event management firm.

Junaini was also supporting two families. He has a teenage son by his first wife, whom he divorced, and two young children from his second marriage.

He was sentenced in March after pleading guilty to five charges of misappropriating $1.36 million of his clients' money.

Eight other similar charges were taken into consideration.

The total sum he filched from 12 clients between 1995 and May last year was $1.68 million, believed to be the highest amount of clients' funds misappropriated by a lawyer.

Most of what he took was from the proceeds of property deals and compensation due to five clients.

Junaini, who had been the sole proprietor of Junaini & Co since 1999, did not make any restitution.

The district judge who had sentenced him noted that Junaini had led an extravagant lifestyle.

Six lawyers have been jailed in the past two years for misappropriating clients' money.

The amounts taken ranged from $4,815 to $881,878.

Three lawyers have also gone missing after taking their clients' money.

Yesterday, the Court of Three Judges, comprising Chief Justice Yong Pung How, Judge of Appeal Chao Hick Tin and Justice Tay Yong Kwang, ordered Junaini to pay $3,000 in costs to the Law Society after it struck him off the rolls.

Mr Daniel John acted for the Law Society.

Jiawei says yes to Susilo
By Marc Lim

SINGAPORE'S No. 1 sports couple Ronald Susilo and Li Jiawei will make their dream match come true - as man and wife.

The courtship which started two years ago turned to bliss yesterday when Susilo, 25, proposed to his 23-year-old sweetheart, hours after her return from the Athens Olympics.

She accepted - in tears.

Susilo said: 'She was so touched, she started crying. We have been together for two years now, so I felt it was the right time to pop the question, after the pressure of the Olympics was over.'

The couple had flirted with giving Singapore its second Olympics medal since Tan Howe Liang's weightlifting silver in 1960.

Susilo beat China's world No. 1 Lin Dan en route to a heart-breaking badminton singles quarter-final exit, while Li lost in both the table tennis singles semi-finals as well as the bronze-medal play-off in Athens.

Susilo, who returned last week, had told Timesport that he was planning a surprise for his girlfriend but did not want to give the game away, although there were hints that he would propose to her.

He was at Changi Airport to welcome her home at 6am yesterday, but did not have a chance to talk to her as she was greeted by VIPs, who included Minister for Defence and Singapore National Olympic Council president Teo Chee Hean, and Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan, as well as about 200 fans, some of whom had waited overnight to see Li.

When the couple finally had time for themselves, Susilo popped the question. He asked what she wanted and she replied: 'Nothing, only you.'

That was Susilo's cue.

He teased her by making her go through four empty ring boxes first, before whipping out a custom-made diamond ring from The Canary Diamond Company.

Li told Timesport: 'I was wondering what he was up to when he asked me that question. I knew marriage was on his mind, but never expected him to propose today.'

However, they have no plans to register their marriage or for a wedding ceremony yet.

But a hongbao there will be - of about $10,000, the same amount fellow paddler Jing Junhong got for her fourth placing at the 2000 Sydney Games - which will come from the Singapore Table Tennis Association for her good showing in Athens.

Susilo said: 'I was more worried about whether she would agree to marry me. Wedding? I'll think about that later.'

bang matz, i think as long as dorang tak pasang cctv yang recordable tu, they will not be able to find out what causes these mishaps. Cuma boleh reply on eyewitnesses' accounts lah.

Tapi I keep on thinking, to fall on to the tracks, for whatever reasons, tergelincir ke, orang tolak ke, means that you must be really standing near the edge of the platform kan? Pada hal every 5 minutes ada announcement suruh kita stand behind yellow line.

So whose fault/carelessness is this?

SINGAPORE'S No. 1 sports couple Ronald Susilo and Li J ...

Aku sokong heartlanders ... kalah tak pe, janji one of us...

Tapi ni aku nengok macam complicated je sistem ni....

well, nak tunggu dorang pasang kat semua stesen, tak tahu berapa ramai lagi mati...

korang pun perasan ada tempat tu space dia sempit....

senang2 je boleh terlebih yellow line....

kalo hari hujan, confirm basah semua lantai....

ANd then korang perasan tak.?

Paya Lebar ni future interchange tau, dia cross ngan Circle Line...

So aku pikir, lain kali bila makin ramai orang dari line2 lain pakai tu Paya Lebar Station....

nah..taken from TODAY paper :

2 MRT accidents in 1 day
1 woman killed, 1 hurt in separate incidents; no foul play suspected

Raymond Andrew
[email protected]

IN separate accidents, two women fell onto the railway tracks yesterday and were hit by trains.

In the first accident, which happened at 1.50pm, Loh Suan Choo was hit by a train at the Bukit Batok MRT station. Mdm Loh, believed to be in her 50s, died at the scene.

At 7.44pm, another woman was hit by a train at the Redhill MRT station. This Chinese woman, believed to be in her 40s, was taken to the Singapore General Hospital with serious head injuries.

At press time, a police spokesman told Today that the woman was in the operating theatre.

An SMRT spokesman confirmed with Today that it is the first time in the history of the SMRT that two track accidents happened on the same day.

In fact, prior to yesterday's mishaps, there had just been 10 track accidents in the past 11 years.

But the past five weeks have seen four cases, including two fatalities.

There were no immediate reasons given for either of yesterday's cases, although the police have been given video recordings of both incidents.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Mdm Loh had jumped into the path of an oncoming train. Eyewitnesses said that some handwritten notes, in Chinese, were found next to her body.

The police declined to comment, but said that they did not suspect foul play in either case.

It is not clear how the second accident at Redhill happened. But they are calling for eyewitnesses to come forward.

If you witnessed either of the accidents, contact the police at 1800 255 0000.

Asked if the SMRT would consider additional safety measures after the latest incidents, its vice-president of corporate communications, Mr Goh Chee Kong, said: "For all these cases, it is important to see what the investigations reveal.

"If there are measures we can implement, we will. (But) we have to make sure measures are meaningful and purposeful."

Since an accident on Aug 14 at Bukit Batok MRT station, where a 47-year-old had his toes crushed after he fell on the tracks, SMRT had told its station officers as well as its station marshals to be vigilant, added Mr Goh.

Of the SMRT's 51 stations, 35 of those above ground have had CCTV recorders installed, while the remaining ones are in the process of having the system put in place.

10 track accidents in the past 11 years - average about once a year? Isn't this a bit too frequent?

And pasal nyonya Bukit Batok tu...naper tetiba jer otak aku suspect suicide?

:hmm:
