Bundesliga Roundup, Feb. 3
BERLIN (AP) - Shinji Ono set up two goals Sunday to help VfL Bochum knock Werder Bremen out of a share of the Bundesliga lead with a 2-1 win.
The Japan midfielder crossed to Benjamin Auer in the 68th minute for the first goal, then Anthar Yahia headed in his 84th-minute corner. Bremen fell three points behind Bayern Munich on the first weekend of play since the league's six-week winter break.
"We can't let this happen very often, letting a game slip out of our hands," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said. "We're missing three points we counted on."
Bremen, which wasted a 1-0 lead, faces Bayern next Sunday. It will be without Brazilian defender Naldo, who was ejected in the 70th minute. Daniel Jensen scored in the 44th with a rising shot inside the left post as Bremen went ahead. But the club wasted its chances, including Aaron Hunt hitting the crossbar in the 57th. That gave 11th-placed Bochum a win in Bremen for the first time in club history. "Even most of the second half it looked like we would win," Schaaf said. "But we didn't finish and it backfired on us." Auer's goal should have been ruled offsides, a missed call later confirmed as wrong by the official review. Auer poked the ball to Ono at the right post, who crossed back to him. The Japanese player was a meter (yard) offsides, but officials thought the ball came from Bremen's Per Mertesacker, not Auer. Bundesliga runner-up Schalke routed league champion VfB Stuttgart 4-1. The game was billed as a duel between Kevin Kuranyi and Stuttgart's Mario Gomez, rivals for the job of Germany's second forward at the European Championship alongside Miroslav Klose. Kuranyi scored two goals, in the 32nd and 51st minutes, in his return from pneumonia. "Maybe I helped myself, but there is a lot of competition on the Germany team," Kuranyi said. Ivan Rakitic set up three Schalke goals with two free kicks and a cross. All five scores in the contest came on set pieces. Heiko Westermann scored in the 76th and Ze Roberto in the 90th for Schalke, while Stuttgart got a 61st-minute free kick goal from Antonio da Silva. A 24-year-old Schalke fan was killed just before the game when he was run over by a streetcar near the stadium. On Saturday, it was: Hansa Rostock 1, Bayern Munich 2; Duisburg 3, Borussia Dortmund 3; Arminia Bielefeld 0, Wolfsburg 1; Hertha Berlin 0, Eintracht Frankfurt 3; Hamburg 1, Hannover 96 1; Karlsruher SC 2, FC Nuremberg 0; and Energie Cottbus 2, Bayer Leverkusen 3. |
