RAFA BENITEZ will put the Anfield storm behind him — by unleashing one of his own on Standard Liege tonight. The Liverpool chief’s plans for the season were derailed last week when the club blocked his bid to sign Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry.
And Benitez aims to take out his frustrations on the Belgian champions by fielding the duo he believes can shoot his side to a third European Cup final in five years.
Fernando Torres lines up alongside £20million buy Robbie Keane for the first time in a competitive game in this Champions League qualifier.
Benitez insisted: “Yes, I think they could be the best partnership in the competition. These two are top class.
“It would be better if they had played together for a long time but they’re both clever players and they will have an even better understanding over time.”
Keane and Torres have played just two 45-minute spells together as a strike paring in the run-up to this third-round qualifier.
But Benitez has already seen enough to know they can carve up Europe — let alone a Standard Liege team celebrating its first Belgian title in 25 years.
He added: “This pre-season was a bit different because we had players like Torres coming back late after Euro 2008 and then we signed Keane too.
“It’s not an ideal situation at this stage but hopefully it will be enough — the very least we will be looking for is an away goal.”
With skipper Steven Gerrard ready to play after a thigh strain, Liverpool should have little trouble reaching the group stages.
But Liege keeper Andres Espinoza reckons the Reds should be scared of his team’s TESTOSTERONE levels.
He said: “We don’t fear Liverpool. We can knock them out by working hard. They could sit back and wait for us to attack but we will all throw ourselves at them. With us playing at home, we will let our testosterone bubble over.
“It makes no difference that we have to face Torres and Gerrard — our defence is the best in Belgium.
“I celebrated our league title with a plunge into the River Maas. But if we knock Liverpool out of Europe, I plan to do a far more spectacular stunt.”
Liege coach Laszlo Boloni added: “They finished fourth in England — which means there are stronger teams around them and it’s possible to beat them.” |
