Wenger rues trophy failures
Arsene Wenger admits he shares Robin van Persie's frustrations over the club's trophy drought in recent seasons.
Van Persie expressed his unhappiness last week at the club's failure to collect any silverware since the 2005 FA Cup win and, far from being annoyed by the Dutchman's comments, Wenger shares the sentiment.
The Frenchman conceded every season without a title felt like a "failure" and wants to keep his squad together to reverse the trend.
The Gunners host Roma in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie tomorrow night and - with the Premier League title now out of sight - that competition, as well as the FA Cup, provides the best opportunity to collect silverware this term.
"I feel that every time I don't win something I view that as a failure," said Wenger.
"I am here to win and give my best every time. Robin, too, is completely focused.
"He is motivated to do it, like the rest of the team. He knows he is at the right age to win trophies and he sees we have the potential to do it. He is, I must say, highly focused.
"What drives me personally is to be as good as I can. Sometimes to get the best out of the team, you sit down at the end of the season and think 'did I do it or not? Did I take the best out of the team or not?' I try to be as objective as I can.
"But you have to accept in Europe there are 20 massive clubs and there are 19 disappointed at the end of the season.
"Let's hope it is the other 19 who are disappointed this season."
As for retaining the services of his top players, the highly-rated Van Persie included, Wenger called for all the club's stars to buy into his footballing philosophy.
"It's important to keep the team together whatever happens, it's important to educate the players," he said.
"You feel after four or five years they will be more of a team than players who have been bought on the market and put together.
"I believe that is why we have followed this policy.
"We want to have values in our side that are more than players being brought together on the market and just saying 'let's win trophies and parade them'.
"We want a different ideal for the game and for our football. No matter what happens it's very important for the players to stay together."
Gunners full-back Bacary Sagna is another who is focused on winning a trophy before the season is out and insists that a European triumph is one of the squad's most coveted prizes.
"Last season we were close to doing something good. We missed out and now we want to play 100%," said Sagna.
"We know we can go far in this Champions League and we will try to do it. From childhood we wanted to play in this kind of competition. As a professional player this is our chance to do something and when we have this opportunity, we will give everything.
"The fans love football and they wish to see their team winning all the time and scoring goals. But they have to understand we are human first and we give everything."

Arsenal Players Urged To Stay By Arsene Wenger
The Gunnersboss would like his top players to stay and help the club develop, rather than leave in what he feels is a misguided attempt to improvetheir careers.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has issued a plea for his players toremain at the Emirates and look to win honours in north London, ratherthen leaving for other clubs in the pursuit of silverware.
Pressurewill grow on Wenger's position as manager of the club if they onceagain fail to win a major honour this season. Cracks were alreadyappearing on Saturday, when the Frenchman's team were greeted on thefinal whistle by a chorus of boos and jeers from Gunner faithful, whohave seemingly sickened of a diet of beautiful football with littletangible reward.
Arsenal are currently fifth in the league, sixpoints behind Aston Villa, and winning the Champions League may well betheir only avenue left to secure a place in next season's competition. They have also not won a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup, and Wenger'sposition will surely be scrutinisied if this season also proves barren.
Whichis probably why the Frenchman is so keen to keep his talented squadtogether for many seasons to come, believing it to be the only way theGunners will win things in future. He also feel that the success of hismore 'ethical' approach to team building will bear fruit in the end, given patience.
"It's important to keep the team togetherwhatever happens, it's important to educate the players," he toldSetanta Sports News earlier.
"You feel after four or five yearsthey will be more of a team than players who have been bought on themarket and put together. I believe that is why we have followed thispolicy.
"We want to have values in our side that are more thanplayers being brought together on the market and just saying 'let's wintrophies and parade them'.
"We want a different ideal for thegame and for our football. No matter what happens it's very importantfor the players to stay together."
Meanwhile, Czech forwardTomas Rosicky is nearing fitness for Arsenal, but will certainly notfeature in either of the legs of the forthcoming Champions Leaguematch-up with Roma.
"He won抰 play in either of the legs against Roma," the Arsenal boss explained.
"Heplayed his last game 13 months ago so it is difficult to say when hewill be back to his best. He has been working hard in training and youwould say he will need two months in competition to get back to hisbest."

Fabregas straining at the leash to return for Arsenal
Tuesday, 24 February 2009
Cesc Fabregas trained with the rest of the Arsenal first-team squad for the first time yesterday since damaging medial knee ligaments on 21 December, with the manager Arsène Wenger admitting that he has had to convince the midfielder he is not yet ready to play.
“He says he could play tomorrow, but I have to tell him it’s not possible. But the doctor tells him first,” said Wenger, who added that his captain was “itchy” to return but still would not figure in the Champions League return leg away at Roma on 11 March.
“But after the second leg he will not be far [from fitness] if it all goes well,” Wenger said. “Two or three weeks’ normal training. He can play now but a medial ligament takes six to eight weeks and if there is any contact then you can see what can happen.”
The 21-year-old (right) has missed 11 matches for Arsenal since he injured his right knee in the home draw against Liverpool, in a challenge with Xabi Alonso, during which time the team have fallen 17 points behind the Premier League leaders Manchester United. Arsenal have lost during that time, but have drawn five league games.
Fabregas has pencilled in the league match against Manchester City on 4 April for his comeback, but Wenger may try to get him ready for the match against Newcastle United on 21 March.
