Sultanah Zanariah binti Almarhum Tunku Ahmad or Tengku Zanariah binti Tengku Panglima Raja Ahmad is the current Sultanah of Johor. She also served as Raja Permaisuri Agong between 1984 and 1989.
She is the second wife of Baginda Almutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail of Johor in 1961. A former Miss Malaysia, she became Sultanah of Johor upon her husband's accession in May 1981 but has never been crowned.
Early Life
Born on 5 July 1940, in Dusun Green, Pasir Mas, Kelantan, Sultanah Zanariah is the seventh child of HRH Tengku Panglima Raja Kelantan from among nine siblings. She comes from the Kelantan royal family.
Alongside palace upbringing, she began her formal education in 1946 at Sultanah Zainab School in Kelantan. Between 1950 and 1952 she studied at the Convent Bukit Nanas in Kuala Lumpur before returning to Kelantan where she continued her studies at Sultan Ibrahim School, Pasir Mas. With the encouragement of her father and her own desire to equip herself for the future, she left for England in 1954 to further her studies at the Upper Chime School, Isle of Wight.
It was in England that she met Sultan Iskandar who was also studying there. |

Dato' Dr. Mohamad Zawawi Ismail
Independent Non-Executive Director
Dato' Dr. Mohamad Zawawi Ismail, a Malaysian, aged 59, joined the Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director in October 2001. He is also a member of the Remuneration Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Audit Committee and the Risk Management Committee.
Dato' Dr. Zawawi gained both his degree and doctorate in Electronic Engineering from Leeds University, England in 1969 and 1972 respectively. In 1996, he received the Doctor of Engineering degree from Leeds. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, a Professional Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia, and a Fellow of The Institute of Physics Malaysia for which he served as its President for many years.
Dato' Dr. Zawawi was Professor of Electronic Engineering and the founding Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), a position he held from October 1992 until December 2000. Other previous appointments include Deputy Director-General, Mimos, Dean of Engineering, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He still maintains links with the academia through being an adjunct Professor of the Department of S&T University of Malaya, Chairman Board of Governors Inti College, and a member of the Board of Governors of International Medical University.
Dato' Dr. Zawawi has served several national bodies including the National Information Technology Council, National Aerospace Council, National Scientific Research and Development Council, and National Higher Education Council. He was once adviser to both the National Science Centre and the National Planetarium. He is currently a Council Member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Chairman of the IRPA Strategic Research Committee of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
He is currently Chairman of EPIC-I Sdn Bhd and a Director of Bumiputra-Commerce Finance Berhad, subsidiary companies of BCB. He is also a Director of Commerce Asset Ventures Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of BCHB. In addition, Dato' Dr. Zawawi is Chairman of Mesiniaga Berhad and Inti Universal Holdings Berhad, both listed companies, and also sits on the Boards of several other private companies.
He does not have any family relationship with other directors and/or the major shareholders of BCB nor does he have any conflict of interest with BCB. He has not been convicted of any offence within the past ten years.
Dato' Dr. Zawawi has attended 16 out of 17 Board Meetings of BCB held in 2005.

Dr Ismail Lakar Sejarah OKU Pertama Dilantik Anggota Dewan Negara
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Dis (Bernama) -- Presiden Persatuan Orang Buta Malaysia Prof Datuk Dr Ismail Md Salleh hari ini melakar sejarah tersendiri apabila dilantik sebagai anggota Dewan Negara yang pertama daripada golongan Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) di negara ini.
Beliau bersama naib pengerusi penyelaras Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Klebang, Melaka, Shamsudin Mehat dan bekas anggota DUN Pending, Sarawak, Datuk Sim Kheng Hui mengangkat sumpah di hadapan Yang Dipertua Dewan Negara Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Pawanteh pada satu upacara ringkas di Dewan Negara di sini.
Ismail mengangkat sumpah menggunakan Braille.
Ismail, 60, yang ditemui pemberita selepas majlis itu berkata pelantikannya jelas membuktikan komitmen kerajaan terhadap OKU.
"Saya ucapkan jutaan terima kasih kepada Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi dan terima kasih juga atas sokongan penuh Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (Menteri Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat) yang mencalonkan nama saya untuk jawatan ini," katanya.
Dilahirkan pada 2 Sept 1947 di Pasir Mas, Kelantan, Ismail memperoleh Ijazah Sarjana Muda Ekonomi dan Sains Politik dari Universiti New York pada 1973 sebelum menamatkan pengajian peringkat Sarjana dalam bidang Sains Ekonomi di Illinois Universiti pada 1974 dan pada 1977 memperoleh Ijazah Kedoktoran (Phd) daripada universi yang sama.
Menceritakan saat mula mengetahui beliau akan dicalon untuk menjadi Senator, Ismail berkata sukar bagi beliau menyatakan perasaannya, yang pasti usaha selama ini berbaloi sebaik menerima surat pelantikan rasmi sebagai anggota Dewan Negara Jumaat lepas.
Beliau berkata antara agenda yang akan diperjuangkan ialah pembelaan untuk wanita OKU terutama mereka yang terencat akal memandangkan golongan itu masih memerlukan banyak sokongan dan bantuan dari segi pendidikan serta memastikan mereka tidak lagi didiskriminasi.
Ismail berkata beliau bercadang mengadakan satu kongres yang mengumpulkan semua OKU dalam tempoh terdekat bagi mengenal pasti isu utama yang masih melanda golongan itu dan mencari jalan mengatasinya.
Bapa kepada enam cahaya mata itu berkata tugasnya sebagai Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Twitech Holdings dan Naib Canselor Universiti Kolej Antarabangsa Teknologi Twintech tidak menghalangnya untuk terus memperjuangkan peningkatan akses terhadap infrastruktur OKU yang pada pendapatnya masih jauh ketinggalan berbanding negara lain di dunia.
Ismai berkata walaupun pelantikan beliau lebih kepada untuk mewakili OKU, beliau tetap akan menyumbang kepakaran yang dimiliki dalam bidang lain seperti ekonomi.
