Valencia Edge Past Valladolid

A thundering drive from Manuel Fernandes proved sufficient to put Valencia past Valladolid - the only side to do so at the José Zorilla this season...

A showstopping performance and goal from Manuel Fernandes gave Valencia all three points in a game that did not go entirely their way. Nonetheless, they finish the evening top of the table.

Valladolid showed at times w hy they'd won both of their previous home games, but in the end they could not find the finish against Los Che, who can be said to have rode their luck at spells.

First Half

The opening stages offered relatively little by way of goalmouth action, although it did showcase a bit of defensive frailty for Valencia, Renan Brito not having yet won the confidence of Moretti (and perhaps vice versa) in this match.

However, Los Che gradually began to find a rhythm, and 25 minutes in the first decent chance of the game emerged. Villa, charging down the right, chipped the ball over the onrushing Asenjo for Angulo, but some deep defending saved the hosts' blushes.

Despite this chance Valladolid were perhaps still on top, with no end of midfield possession for the Pucela, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. In holding the ball, though, they denied Mata and Villa too much of a chance to make an impact.

In fact, despite some more good work from Villa just towards the end of the half, there was not even another shot on target worthy of the name.

Second Half

Valencia changed tack a bit for the second period, relying on an advanced role for Manuel Fernandes a bit more. On the one hand this was a risky gambit as it left Albelda alone in a defensive role, but on another it almost paid dividends as he looped a shot wide five minutes after the restart.

A further five minutes later his effort was to be rewarded with a goal after a stunning drive from the edge of the box. Villa flicked the ball his way on the border of the area, and the Portuguese international drove it way into the bottom-right corner with his left foot: a superb goal to cap what was overall an excellent performance.

This single goal lead, though, was precarious as Valladolid continued to hold possession, and perhaps due to going behind they quickly upped their game. The rapidly-improving Renan Brito had to look likely to deny Sesma the chance to play the ball across goal just after Fernandes' strike.

Still, the Pucela were their own worst enemy: with substitute Escudero unmarked on the edge of the box the chance was ripe for a long-range effort, but the Argentine inexplicably blasted his shot over the bar.

Long-range shots were indeed the order of the day, for despite Sesma's good runs up the flank the likes of Fernandes were willing to track back and deny him a chance.

As the final ten minutes wore on the hosts' faith noticably drifted away as Fernandes' energy continued, and 0-1 it ended.

Emery Modest, Yet Defends Win

Valencia boss Unai Emery was keen to put his individual status aside, but he was quick to state that his side deserved their win over Real Valladolid...

Emery became the most successful debutant boss in the club's history tonight with 16 points from his opening 18 games, although Valencia didn't have it all their own way in their 1-0 success at the José Zorilla.

He told Marca after the game, "It was a very balanced game, but the result was fair.

"There were chances for both sides, but not very many clear ones."

Still, he found praise for both his club and the Pucela.

"They created a lot of danger thanks to Pedro León from dead balls," admitted the young coach.

"But at 1-0 we saw a more controlled game, and we could have killed it off on the break a couple of times. If those had been scored it would have been a different game.

"Yet we respect them as a rival a lot because they're a team that demands a lot of concentration and intensity both in defence and attack."

Che Climbers

Manuel Fernandes scored the decisive goal as for the second time in four days he put in a fantastic performance.

"In the first half he was involved, and in the second he was even more emphasised," said his boss.

"He has a strong genetic force, and I think that he needs to keep on going like this to help the team."

Despite Emery himself now being immortalised in Valencia history after the superb start to the season, he saw such matters only as "an anecdote."

"It's just another step in the growth of Valencia," he shrugged.

Modest Portugalete draw holders Valencia in King’s Cup

MADRID, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Portugalete of the Spanish Tercera division (fourth tier) were pitched against holders and Primera Liga leaders Valencia in the draw for the last 32 of the King’s Cup on Friday.

The modest Basque club, from just outside Bilbao, have home advantage for the first leg on Oct. 29 and are the lowest ranked side left in the competition.

They face Unai Emery’s early Primera Liga pacesetters, who are unbeaten in their opening six league matches. Last season, under Ronald Koeman, Valencia beat Getafe 3-1 in the final to claim their seventh King’s Cup crown.

“At home we will battle away, try not to concede a goal, and work hard in defence. Beyond that, we have no alternative but to try and enjoy ourselves and see if we can nick some of their shirts,” Portugalete player Iker Arzubiaga told Radio Popular.

“I don’t think for a moment we have a chance of progressing. If it was a one-off game we could cause an upset winning at home, but later to go to the Mestalla will be tough.”

The arrival of the top-flight clubs in the tournament also saw Segunda B (third tier) sides Real Union and Benidorm drawn with champions Real Madrid and 24-times cup winners Barcelona respectively.

There are four all-Primera Liga ties that include Getafe, runners-up over the last two years, playing Osasuna and 23-times winners Athletic Bilbao facing 2003 finalists Recreativo Huelva.

The first legs are scheduled to be played on Oct. 29 with the return matches on Nov. 12. (Writing by Mark Elkington, editing by Rex Gowar)
