The decisive factor
Can one player win a game single-handedly? Very unlikely, and that would certainly deliver a damning indictment of his team-mates.
Still there are a handful of players on this planet every club would love to have on their books - because they can make the difference in close games.
Franck Ribery is one of them. Without the injured Frenchman FC Bayern found it difficult to get going, but since he returned the record champions have had some run in both Bundesliga and Champions League.
Pink shoes create a stir
"Imagine how good he would play with real football shoes", Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer jokingly praised Ribery and his pink shoes.
It's certainly pure speculation whether the French international would play even better in other shoes. But one thing is obvious: Ribery has had an outstanding first half of the season.
bundesliga.de takes a close look at the past six months.
The shock
Matches between France and Italy are normally rather unappealing for FC Bayern fans, but all "Reds" were shocked when Franck Ribery had to be stretchered off on June 17th, 2008 at 20:55. At least it wasn't a broken leg which had been initially feared, but a torn ankle ligament still kept the Frenchman sidelined for months.
The poor start
FC Bayern found it difficult to get going under new coach J黵gen Klinsmann and without Ribery. Nine points from their opening seven games were Bayern's worst-ever Bundesliga start! Interesting fact: Bayern won only two out of six matches without Ribery so far.
The upturn
Ribery was back in the starting line-up on matchday 7, and Bayern are unbeaten in eleven matches since. With their French winger available, FCB have picked up 2.4 points per game (without him just 1.5 points per game) and won 73% of their matches.
The goalgetter
Ribery was impressive in Bayern's unbeaten run. The Frenchman was on the scoresheet in six successive matches (matchdays 9 to 14). The only other Bundesliga player to achieve that was team-mate Luca Toni. Ribery also set up two goals for his team-mates.
Making things happen
It's no accident that Ribery is so prolific. The Frenchman averages 101 touches per 90 minutes, more than any other Bundesliga player. An impressive 73% of his non-blocked shots are on target, and he wins 51% of his challenges, which is more than respectable for an attacking player.
The wing wizard
Ribery tries a dribbling every 13 minutes. Only one Bundesliga player (M鰊chengladbach youngster Marko Marin) does that more often. The Frenchman is successful with 46% of his dribblings, and he's so skillful that he's fouled more often than any other Bundesliga player (once every 18 minutes).
Attack is the best defence
Coincidence? With Ribery in the team, Bayern have conceded 13 goals in eleven games (1.18 per game), without him eleven goals in six games. That's 1.83 per game and distinctly more. Seemingly the old saying "attack is the best defence" is proved right on this occasion - who would deny that Bayern's attack is stronger with Ribery on the wing?
Climbing up the standings
When Franck Ribery returned to the team, Bayern were in mid-table obscurity. Since then, Bayern have kept climbing the standings and now they're in second place during the winter break, level on points with "Autumn Champions" 1899 Hoffenheim. Merry Christmas!

bayern's miss og the season
Gattuso I Almost Joined Bayern But Galliani Told Me To Stay
The crocked star was close to joining Bayern Munich before Adriano Galliani waved his fists..
Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has sensationally revealed he was close to joining Bayern Munich in the summer before vice-president Adriano Galliani stepped in to scupper the deal.
The Italian international will miss the rest of the season through a nasty knee injury.
Although he almost left San Siro, Gattuso has no regrets deciding to stay.
"I was close to joining Bayern but I am happy to have stayed," Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia.
"I want to thank Galliani who convinced me to stay. I think it was the right choice.
"I was really close to going but I am happy at Milan and proud to wear this shirt."
Gattuso is unlikely to be back until the end of the season and the Rossoneri are currently looking at a number of players for possible cover.
Reports suggest Palermo's Giulio Migliaccio is being eyed by the club but it's likely Mathieu Flamini will be used to cover for his crocked teammate. |
