Liverpool Agree Deal with Roma for Doni

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Roma to sign Brazilian goalkeeper Doni, it is understood. Sky Sports Italia report that the two clubs have agreed a fee and the Reds will now discuss personal terms with the player ahead of his prospective move to Anfield.

Liverpool have been in the market for a goalkeeper after accepting that their current second and third choices, Brad Jones and Peter Gulacsi, would be transferred and loaned out this summer, respectively. Having missed out on American veteran Brad Friedel, Kenny Dalglish turned his attentions to the considerably younger, yet still experienced Doni.

Having established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A between 2006 and 2008, the now 31-year-old earned a contract extension that would keep him at the club until 2o12. In the following seasons, though, he lost his place to Artur and Júlio Sérgio as injury prevented him staking a serious claim between the sticks.

He was recalled earlier this season by recently instated caretaker manager Vincenzo Montella, but the powers that be at Roma remain unconvinced that the player has a future at the club. Liverpool will now discuss personal terms with Doni about becoming backup to Pepe Reina at Anfield, a move which should suit all parties perfectly.

Pepe Reina will be especially pleased about this signing should it transpire, as he has made a point of requesting reliable backup so the Reds can remain competitive in his absence. Liverpool will likely use Doni in the early stages of cup competitions, while also entrusting him to deputise should Reina suffer from injury, illness or fatigue throughout the season.

Roma will also be content with cashing in on a player who would otherwise be free to leave the club on a Bosman next term.

Liverpool to Sign Trio This Week

Liverpool will complete the signing of at least two players this week prior to the under-21 European Championships. Kenny Dalglish is said to be working on deals to bring Jordan Henderson and Phil Jones to Anfield before they set off with Stuart Pearce’s under-21s, while a move for Stewart Downing is also in the offing.

It is believed that Dalglish has offered Sunderland an improved bid of £18.5m for Jordan Henderson, with the Scot willing to offer the youngster wages in excess of £60k a week.

The fee, £2.5m over Sunderland’s valuation of the player, is in order to push through a quick sale so that the player can undergo a medical and finalise any formalities before he travels to Denmark. It will also ensure that Liverpool can sign the player for a reasonable fee, with the U21 Championships likely to increase Henderson’s price tag.

Likewise Phil Jones also looks set to complete a £15m switch before the weekend; the 19-year-old has become a fixture in Blackburn’s squad this season, forcing his way through the ranks and gaining interest from a host of top Premier League clubs.

However, Dalglish will beat any competition to the youngster’s signature – who he believes could be a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher. If the Reds are unable to tie up deals for the duo before Wednesday, they will have to delay discussions until the tournament reaches its conclusion at the end of the month.

Stewart Downing could also make the switch to Merseyside after much speculation regarding his future. It is believed that the England international is ready to draw the curtain on his time at Aston Villa, and the Reds are keen to conclude a deal before any new manager can step into the Midlands outfit and block it.

Rafa Benitez is now the bookies’ favourite to succeed Gerard Houllier at Villa Park and would surely not risk incurring the wrath of the home faithful by selling their prized asset to a former club.

Liverpool uji Harimau Malaya
