Special: Bayern Munich: The Ones That Got Away
Following on from Goal.com’s earlier article about whether Bayern Munich represent a pitfall for German youth, Mathew Burt selects a Bayern XI from players the club have allowed to slip through their fingers.
Such is the pulling power of Bavarian giants Bayern Munich, that they can attract the cream of German football at an early age with the promise of money and footballing glory.
There are regular success stories of the local lad come good with current stars Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger examples of Bavarian youngsters who have made it to the top with Bayern Munich.
However, there are many more examples of young players joining Bayern and then failing to make the grade. More often than not though these players are shipped on to other clubs where they enjoy much success.
In the past two weeks it has been revealed that both Lukas Podolski and Toni Kroos are being allowed to leave the club. Here we select a team of Bayern ‘rejects’ who when combined would form quite a formidable side in their own right.
Goalkeeper:
Bernd Dreher
The fact that Oliver Kahn held the mantle as Bayern’s number one keeper for so many years made the role of back-up keeper at the club one that was never going to see the incumbent seeing much game time. Bayern have let hardly any keepers ‘slip’ through their net. However, Bernd Dreher recently retired as reserve keeper at the club after 12 years as Kahn’s understudy.
In that time he made just 13 appearances- so that is about one game a season. Having made over 200 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayer Uerdingen, it remains unknown what would have become of Dreher had he been given a proper run in he team. He is now a goalkeeping coach at the club and recently commented that he is training more now than he did as Kahn’s back-up.
Defenders:
Marcell Jansen
Jansen was signed from Borussia Moenchengladbach as one of the bright young hopes of German football. He seemed a typical Bayern signing having shown great promise at Gladbach and having broken into the German national team set-up.
Juergen Klinsmann handed the left-back his debut in September 2005, but as Bayern trainer decided he was surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena after just one season with the Bavarians. Ottmar Hitzfeld signed him for €9 million with Barcelona and Arsenal both also reportedly interested, but he was sold to Hamburg at the start of this season for €8 million.
Before he left, he lashed out at the club saying they were a club that let talent go to waste.
Mats Hummels
Many pundits believe that Hummels is a future Bayern centre-back in the making. The 20-year-old joined the Bavarians in December 2006 and was handed his debut on 19th May 2007 in a 5-2 win over Mainz.
However with the likes of Lucio, Martin Demichelis and Daniel van Buyten ahead of him in the pecking order, he was sent to Borussia Dortmund on loan to gain first team experience. He certainly hasn’t disappointed at the Signal-Iduna Park, where he has formed a superb defensive partnership with Neven Subotic.
Alou Diarra
Frenchman Diarra’s stay at the Munich giants was a short-lived and largely unnoticed one. He joined the Bavarian club in 2000 from CS Louhans-Cuiseaux after being scouted by the German outfit. However, he didn’t make an appearance for Bayern in his two years at the club.
He was shipped on to Liverpool who believed they could profit from his talent, but once again he made no appearances in their first team. He made a comeback at Lens, where he became a regular once again, before being signed by perennial French champions Lyon.
He failed to dislodge Jeremy Toulalan and was subsequently sold to Bordeaux in 2007 for €7.75 million.
Andreas Gorlitz
Andy Gorlitz is yet another Bayern youngster forced to seek his fortune elsewhere having found his opportunities limited at the Allianz Arena. The now 26-year-old was signed from city rivals 1860 Munich but made only 18 appearances in three years.
In 2007 he was loaned out to Karlsruhe, but such is the evaluation of his talent, that Bayern were only prepared to make it a loan move. The original move was however extended recently.
Midfielders:
Zvejezdan Misimovic
Bosnian midfielder Zvejezdan Misimovic is making quite a name for himself at Wolfsburg, but it could have been Bayern who were enjoying his talents.
Born in Munich to Bosnian Serb parents Misimovic played 102 times for Bayern Munich II before being promoted to the first team squad in 2002. He made just three appearances for Bayern before being sold to VfL Bochum. While at the Rewirpower Stadion he became a much sought after property and was snapped up by former Bayern boss Felix Magath at Wolfsburg for €3.9 million.
Toni Kroos
Kroos has been dubbed by many as the ‘next big thing’ in German football. The 19-year-old rose to prominence at the U-17 World Cup in 2007 when he was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player while also winning the bronze shoe after scoring five goals as Bayern finished third.
He made his Bayern debut last season in a 5-0 mauling of Cottbus when he provided two assists and also made a huge impact as a substitute in Bayern’s Uefa Cup tie with Red Star Belgrade.
However, with Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Hamit Altintop, Tim Borowski, and now Landon Donovan ahead of him in the pecking order, he has been loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen in order to get “more experience”.
Piotr Trochowski
The diminutive Piotr Trochowski like Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose was born in Poland but is a German international. He began his career in Hamburg with St. Pauli before Bayern snapped him up. He worked his way through the junior sides before graduating to Bayern Munich amateurs where he made 38 appearances. He made his debut for the first team in 2002 but made just 13 appearances over three seasons before leaving citing a lack of first-team opportunities.
At Hamburg he has become a regular German international winning 18 caps thus far and has inherited the mantle of crowd favourite from Rafael van der Vaart. It was rumoured that Arsene Wenger wanted to sign him for Arsenal in the summer.
Forwards:
Jan Schlaudraff
Schlaudraff was signed by Bayern in the summer of 2007 having impressed greatly for Alemannia Aachen in the Bundesliga despite their eventual relegation. The Bavarians snapped him up for what was seen as a bargain €1.2 million.
However with Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski ahead of him in the Bayern pecking order he made just 8 appearances for the first team without registering a goal. He was subsequently sold to Hannover where he is looking to resurrect his career which had seen him break into the German national squad.
Paolo Guerrero
Having scored over 200 goals for his Peruvian side Allianz Lima Guerrero signed a contract with Bayern in 2002. He started with Bayern amateurs and hit 45 goals in 66 appearances making him a hot prospect for the step up into the first team.
However, when the step up came the youngster struggled somewhat against the competition from Roque Santa Cruz, Roy Makaay, and Claudio Pizarro and after 27 appearances and 10 goals was sold to Hamburg.
Lukas Podolski
If ever Bayern Munich was the place to ruin a top talent, then the case of Lukas Podolski is a prime case. Signed in 2006 as the ‘bright new hope’ of German football, Prinz Poldi has lasted just three seasons at the Allianz Arena before calling it a day and returning to Koeln.
Prolific for Germany, Podolski has never hit the heights at Bayern and has found it extremely difficult to dislodge Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose as Bayern’s first-choice strike pairing. Will he become the next in a long one of players to slip through the Bayern net? That remains to be seen.

Uli Hoeness : Lukas Podolski Didn’t Fight Enough
Bayern Munich manager Uli Hoeness has claimed that Lukas Podolski didn’t put in enough fight in his efforts to get into the first team, while also admitting he was worth more than the €10 million Koeln have paid for him.
Lukas Podolski, the 23-year-old Germany international, has had his wish granted by Bayern Munich and been allowed to join his former club FC Koeln at the end of the season in a deal worth a reported €10 million.
However, Hoeness believes that the move to the Rhein-Energie Stadion is one full of risk for the German youngster.
“The biggest danger is the level of expectation on him. Nobody can justify it,” said the Bayern boss.
Hoeness added that the Bavarians had compromised on the fee for the player. “The €10 million is not exactly his market value. The lad is worth much more than that.”
There were reported bids of over €20 million from both Manchester City and Tottenham six months ago. Hoeness actually values Podolski at €15-18 million. They paid Koeln €10 million for him back in 2006.
However, despite understanding Podolski's desire to return to Koeln, the Bayern manager has criticised the player for a lack of fight.
“At the smallest sign of resistance, he gave up. He never tried to overcome the competition,” Hoeness explained.
“He came up against a wall and said to himself: ‘I’m not going to get over it,’” Hoeness told the Koelner Express. “Others would have said: ‘I will get over this wall’. The problem was his heart never left Koeln. MY ASSE
“But I don’t think he has become a worse player. On the contrary, he has become stronger as a person, has had his horizons expanded and has matured.” |

poldi performed well at wc & euro, of course he's not happy just to start from the bench at club level, the fact he actually lasted 3 whole season before moving on from bayern is actuall suprising |
