Colchoneros face early test

Atl閠ico Madrid host Valencia on Saturday in an early test of their Champions League credentials. Another summer of heavy spending has raised hopes around the Vicente Calderon, and new manager Javier Aguirre insisted on Friday his side would aim to impose themselves on home turf.

"At home we have to be aggressive and to take charge of the game. We have to go for it from the first minute. Valencia are a strong side, so we must use the ball intelligently and keep possession. We will need to play a perfect game."

18 year-old Argentinian striker Sergio Ag黣ro has been brought in, along with Dinamo Moscow trio Maniche, Costinha and Giourkas Seitaridis, Getafe's Mariano Pernia and Mista from Valencia.

Though many see the club's success in persuading talisman Fernando Torres to sign a new contract as their most significant coup.

A thigh strain is likely to see Ag黣ro start on the bench, with Mista set to partner Torres in attack against his old club. The 28 year-old was forced to play second fiddle to David Villa for most of last season, though insisted on Thursday he "has nothing to prove to [Valencia boss] Quique Sanchez Flores."

Valencia are without the Spanish trio of Ruben Baraja, Asier del Horno and David Albelda, the latter having sustained a broken cheekbone in Spain's 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland in midweek.

Fans are also likely to have to wait before they catch a glimpse of new &euro25 million signing Joaquin.

There are no problems with the player, he is well, but he needs a short period of adaptation. We want him to be 100 percent before we bring him into the team" Sanchez Flores told a news conference on Friday.

Barcelona, Valencia extend perfect records in Spanish league

MADRID, Spain (AP) -Samuel Eto'o scored two goals before halftime Saturday to help defending champion FC Barcelona beat visiting Osasuna 3-0 and maintain its perfect start to the Spanish league season.

Lionel Messi also scored before halftime, giving Barcelona six points from the opening two games.

Valencia kept pace, winning its second by beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 on an early David Villa goal. Atletico captain Fernando Torres and Valencia defender Emiliano Moretti were ejected in the second half.

On Sunday, Sevilla, Getafe, Deportivo La Coruna and Gimnastic Tarragona will also bid for their second wins. It's: Real Sociedad vs. Sevilla; Getafe vs. Racing Santander; Mallorca vs. Deportivo; Gimnastic Tarragona vs. Celta Vigo; Levante vs. Real Madrid; Villarreal vs. Recreativo Huelva; Real Betis vs. Athletic Bilbao; and Zaragoza vs. Espanyol.

Barcelona's Ronaldinho, playing his first league match of the season, made an instant impact by creating the first goal for Eto'o in the second minute at Camp Nou stadium.

The Brazilian played a wall pass with midfielder Deco, dribbled to the line before crossing low for Eto'o to score from close range.

Eto'o scored a second by lifting the ball over advancing goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez in the 27th minute after Osasuna left back Enrique Corrales headed the ball backward into his path.

Eto'o, the league's leading scorer last season with 26 goals, matched Sevilla striker Kepa Blanco with three this season.

Barcelona's third goal in the 37th minute also resulted by capitalizing on a defensive lapse after Ricardo's attempted clearance rebounded off teammate Josetxo Romero to Eto'o. The Cameroonian passed to Messi, who sidefooted the ball through Ricardo's legs for his first goal of the season.

Rijkaard, whose side kicks off its European Champions League defense against Levski Sofia on Tuesday, rested captain Carles Puyol and handed a Spanish league debut to France defender Lilian Thuram, the club's offseason acquisition from Juventus.

Osasuna's defeat added to the worries of new coach Jose Angel Ziganda, whose team was eliminated from the Champions League qualifying stage and has not scored in two league losses.

Valencia's Villa glanced home a low cross from left winger Vicente Rodriguez in the seventh minute to give his team to its seventh win in 10 visits to Vicente Calderon stadium.

Atletico improved following the second-half arrival of Argentine substitute Sergio Aguero and was boosted further in the 66th minute when Moretti was ejected for a wild tackle on right back Juan Valera.

However, the home team's hopes were dealt a blow 10 minutes later when Torres received two yellow cards in quick succession.

Valencia's win was achieved without new acquisition Joaquin Sanchez, who arrived from Betis for a club record fee of $25 million (US$31.7 million) last week, together with injured captain David Albelda, midfielder Ruben Baraja and left back Asier del Horno. Striker Fernando Morientes was left on the bench.

Olympiacos undone by magic Morientes

A hat-trick from Fernando Morientes helped Valencia CF open their UEFA Champions League campaign with an impressive Group D victory at Olympiacos CFP, although the Spanish side left it late to seal the points in Athens.

Late clinchers
The former Real Madrid CF striker scored twice in quick succession at the end of the first half after Michalis Konstantinou had shot the home team ahead. However Valencia, who had never won in three previous visits to Greece, were pegged back by Nery Alberto Castillo's equaliser midway through the second period and seemed to be heading for a draw until Ra鷏 Albiol restored their advantage from a corner with five minutes remaining and Morientes added the finishing touch in the final minute, heading in another set-piece.

Aggressive opening
Olympiacos began the match in aggressive mood with Castillo forcing a corner with a powerful run after just 30 seconds. The best early chance came at the other end, however, Morientes setting up Albiol on the edge of the area only for the defender to fire straight at Antonios Nikopolidis. The hosts responded by creating a great opening of their own as Rivaldo's free-kick picked out Abdeslam Ouaddou but his glancing near-post header flashed wide.

Olympiacos breakthrough
Valencia keeper Santiago Cañizares had to be alert again to gather a dangerous Predrag Djordjević cross and parry a Rivaldo free-kick two minutes later as Olympiacos started to apply pressure. The Greek champions' adventure was finally rewarded in the 28th minute when Konstantinou opened the scoring, controlling Ieroklis Stoltidis's superb chipped pass on his chest before guiding a low shot past Cañizares to spark jubilant scenes among home supporters.

Morientes turnaround
Their joy proved to be short-lived, however, as Morientes replied for the visitors six minutes later, turning in David Villa's low left-wing centre from point-blank range. The No9 turned the tie on its head six minutes before the interval as Miguel Ángel Angulo galloped on to a defence-splitting pass to bear down on the unprotected Nikopolidis and, although the Olympiacos keeper blocked the initial effort with his legs, the rebound fell perfectly for Morientes to clip in.

Castillo cheer
The Mestalla outfit looked likely to add to their advantage as the second half kicked off, Villa passing up two opportunities in three minutes by twice shooting straight at Nikopolidis. Cañizares then made a fantastic fingertip stop to touch Konstantinou's header around the post but the custodian was helpless six minutes past the hour when Djordjević's long ball found Castillo to pick out the corner of the net with a low effort.

Corner success
Olympiacos might have been in front in the 76th minute as Castillo's commitment created a chance for Rivaldo, but the Brazilian blasted wildly with the goal at his mercy. That was to prove costly when a corner broke to Albiol on the edge of the box and the defender thundered in an unstoppable drive, before Morientes climbed above Ouaddou to nod in David Silva's left-wing corner with seconds left. Valencia welcome AS Roma to Spain on Matchday 2, when Olympiacos visit FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
