The hunt for missing EgyptAir flight MS804 entered a second day on Friday, after an evening of confusion on Thursday about progress on the search efforts.
The passenger jet crashed into the Mediterranean Sea early on Thursday morning with 66 people on board. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that it brought down by an act of terrorism.
EgyptAir originally said debris found in the sea off Crete had been confirmed as coming from the missing aircraft, which had been flying from Paris to Cairo. Greece’s air safety authority, however, contradicted that claim, prompting EgyptAir to withdraw it.
Sherif Fathy, Egypt’s aviation minister, said the possibility of a terrorist attack was higher than technical failure, but added: “It is still speculations and assumptions.”
Contrary to some reports, a US official said that, so far, there was no evidence in satellite imagery of an explosion.

KAHERAH 20 Mei - Tentera Mesir hari ini menemukan barangan milik penumpang dan serpihan pesawat EgyptAir MS804, sekali gus memberi harapan untuk mengenal pasti lokasi tepat pesawat itu yang terhempas di Laut Mediterranean.
“Objek tersebut ditemukan kira-kira 290 kilometer dari utara Iskandariah oleh pesawat tentera udara dan kapal tentera laut Mesir,” kata jurucakap tentera menerusi kenyataan dalam laman sosial Facebook. - AFP

Bangkai pesawat EgyptAir ditemui di Mediterranean - Tentera Mesir
Tentera Mesir berkata pasukan mencarinya sudah menemui bangkai pesawat EgyptAir yang terhempas di Mediterranean, kira-kira 290 kilometer ke utara Iskandariah. Pesawat itu membawa 66 penumpang dan anak kapal ketika dalam perjalanan dari Paris ke Kaherah.
"Pesawat dan kapal tentera laut Mesir menemui barang peribadi penumpang dan sebahagian bangkai pesawat," kata jurucakapnya di laman Facebook. - AFP

An Egyptian army spokesperson has confirmed that debris from the plane has been found.
The spokesperson, in a statement published on the army’s official Facebook page, said a number of “personal effects” had been found roughly 180 miles off the Egyptian coast.
Search and rescue operations will continue, the statement said, as the army presses on searching for the black box in the surrounding area.
It follows conflicting information released overnight, which initially appeared to suggest debris had been discovered off the coast of the Greek island of Karpathos – but Greek officials later concluded the debris found did not belong to an aircraft, forcing EgyptAir to retract last night’s confirmation.
Shortly after the army’s statement, EgyptAir also confirmed Friday morning debris had been found.
In a statement, the airline said “passenger belongings” and “wreckage” had been discovered 295 k.m. off the coast, near Alexandria. |
