Not that slim, but the camera is SUPER
BEING a die-hard Nokia user yearning for a clamshell 3G phone, I thought the new N71 would be the answer.
But for every glowing reason to love the phone, there is a small but valid cosmetic reason to complain about it.
No doubt it comes from the well-established N-series of high-end multimedia smartphones that boast solid music playback, business features and sleek looks.
But when you get your hands on the phone, you will realise it is a little too big at 9.8cm by 5.1 cm by 2.6cm and a tad heavy at 139g, especially for dainty hands.
And it is a feat trying to flick it open in one smooth action. Isn't that the most important feature in a clamshell?
Also, for a phone this size, the keypad is exceptionally small and its buttons are not easy to press.
However, it does have a reasonably big internal screen - 6cm across the diagonal - that can display 262K colours.
Ideal for photo-taking, you think, until you discover that the camera screen is limited to a 2.7cm height and there is no way to change it to a full screen.
Another minus point is the attractive-looking external screen that turns out to be nothing more than a clock and wallpaper display.
And its 65,000 colour depth makes pictures look faded and grainy.
CAMERA CHEER
One reason to love the phone, however, is its super-duper 2-megapixel camera.
It takes very clear and vivid pictures at 1600x1200 pixel resolution and wastes no time doing it - it will capture the picture the moment you press the button.
The phone also comes with a free 128MB miniSD card, which allows you to store up to 500 pictures.
For those who love snapping their own portraits, note that when you switch to the smaller, front-facing VGA camera, the image quality drops.
Nokia phones are known to be user-friendly and the N71 takes this to the next level by offering both a multimedia key and an onscreen menu to help you quickly access various functions.
Browsing the Internet on the N71 is a very pleasant experience and sending e-mail is a breeze.
Websites are easy to navigate and the phone has a mini map feature that offers a semi-transparent zoomed-out overall view of the page.
It can also be an effective organiser that can be synchronised with compatible PCs using Bluetooth, infra-red or USB.
However, the N-series handphones mostly share the same features, so if you cannot take the bulk of the N71, opt for its more compact siblings.
The Nokia N71 costs $828 without a plan. |

Ultra-thin model with quirky features
AT 14.9mm, the SGH-Z540 is touted by Samsung as the thinnest 3G handphone on the market.
But it sure doesn't skimp on features.
Packed with videotelephony and multimedia capabilities, the SGH-Z540 has everything you'd want in a small package.
While the minimalist design is very masculine, the phone will surprise the ladies with its quirky features.
Taking the humdrum out of dialling, Samsung designers have pegged the numbers to the musical scale, so you can tap out the William Tell overture if that rocks your world.
You can also activate 'sticky notes', quill calligraphy or change the colour of the screen fonts or background.
The Z540 lets you customise to a fine degree the different volume levels for your ring and alert tones, right down to when you want your phone to chirp and when you want it to shut up.
For those who are mad about personalising their phones, this truly takes it to the next level.
What is not hot, however, is the phone's rather weak 1.3-megapixel camera.
The camera appears to operate slowly, and because the image in the viewfinder is laggy, it takes some time to properly frame the shot you want. This throws spontaneity right out of the window.
In dim light, this lag is nauseating.
I tried taking photos in a hotel lobby at night, and all I saw were psychedelic blurry lines of light.
But if you have an extremely steady hand, the clarity of the 262k TFT colour screen does make the photos shot in low-lighting conditions look wonderful.
And the preloaded video clips are also simply great to look at.
The Samsung SGH-Z540 retails at $738 with a two-year plan or $838 without contract.
Rating: shit

Motorola unveils latest skinny phones KRZR, RIZR
ROSEMONT, Illinois (Reuters) - Motorola Inc. , the world's second-biggest maker of cellphones, on Monday unveiled several new handsets, including the Krzr and the Rizr, which are narrower than its flagship Razr.
The new models are part of a family of cellphones that Motorola is building around the Razr, which has helped the company revitalize its brand in the last few years.
As competitors like Samsung followed suit with their own skinny phones, Motorola hopes to keep up the momentum of the Razr with new models inspired by its style and four-letter name. Motorola has sold about 50 million Razr phones since they were first launched in late 2004.
The 42-millimeter-wide Krzr flips open like the 54 millimeter-wide Razr, but is slightly thicker, as it has a better 2-megapixel camera and space for extra storage for up to 500 songs.
The Krzr, made of magnesium, polished chrome and hardened glass, also has a reflective surface and will come in two colors: gray and blue. It is to be sold worldwide by the end of the year.
The narrower phone should help the company attract new customers including women, said Tracey Koziol, an executive in Motorola's handset division.
"For people with smaller hands, it does probably fit better than the Razr, especially for Asian customers and ladies," said Koziol, adding that most cellphone carriers around the world have shown interest in the product.
"We expect very good takeup," she said.
Koziol said the Krzr would probably sell at around the bottom of the high-end price range, but declined to give a specific figure. Analysts often describe phones that sell for more than $250 as high-end, and $125-to-$25O phones as mid-tier.
The Krzr will be available for networks running on GSM, the dominant global wireless standard, and CDMA, a popular phone standard in the United States, and parts of Asia.
Motorola also unveiled the Rizr, which is 46 millimeters wide and slides open. It gives users the option of turning the phone sideways when it is closed to take landscape photographs using a dedicated button for its 2-megapixel camera.
Available in blue, red and black, the Rizr will initially be sold just to operators using GSM networks. It is expected to sell in the mid-tier price range.
Motorola also unveiled three phones for high-speed wireless services. The Razr XX and the Razr Maxx will work on networks based on HSDPA, a faster version of GSM, and will allow users to stream video or music to the phones over the air.
The Razr XX is expected to price in the mid-tier range while the Maxx, which has room for extra storage and a 2-megapixel camera, is expected to sell in the high-end range.
Motorola also debuted the SLVR L7c, a candybar phone also inspired by the Razr that will run on EV-DO, a faster version of CDMA. |
