Everton's Cahill explains controversiol goal celebration
tribalfooball.com - March 02, 2008

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill explained the motivation over his controversiol goal celebration against Portsmouth yesterday.

After heading his side's second in their 3-1 win over Portsmouth, an emotional Cahill wheeled away with one wrist placed over the other as if in handcuffs.

The Australia midfielder looked close to tears and explained the goal had been dedicated to his brother Sean, jailed for six years in January after an attack that left his victim Chris Stapley partially blinded, says the Daily Mail.

The incident took place outside a cab office in Bromley in 2004.

After fleeing to Sydney while on bail, Cahill's brother was extradited and found guilty of grievous bodily harm.

The court heard he kicked Mr Stapley in the head twice while he lay on the floor.

Cahill, 28, said: "That was for my older brother because I am just proud that he is happy and I am happy. I just wanted to send a message to him. It has been emotional for me because my family mean so much to me."

Neville's rallying call

Phil Neville has issued a rallying call in the direction of his team-mates as Everton's season threatens to peter out.

For much of the campaign Everton looked capable of qualifying for a UEFA Champions League place but in recent weeks poor form has put paid to best laid plans.

With Liverpool odds-on favourites to claim fourth in the table, Everton's new challenge is to fend off those clubs closing in on fifth.

Aston Villa and Portsmouth have hit their stride at just the right time of the season and Neville has warned his Toffees team-mates that they must see the campaign out professionally, starting against Chelsea on Thursday.

Brick wall

"We're at the stage of the season where we seem to have hit a brick wall," Neville told evertonTV.

"But we have got to recover and find something from within to kick on and get that fourth place. That's still what we are aiming for and the position that we want.

"We can't worry about results at Anfield or Villa Park or Portsmouth.

"We have to make sure we win our own games and there's no better way to bounce back from the disappointment of the weekend by beating a quality team like Chelsea.

"There's no motivation needed for Thursday, fourth place is still up for grabs and we have to make sure that we get the just rewards for our season.

"eople are talking about what a fantastic season we have had, but it will count for nothing if we don't qualify for Europe.

"Even finishing in fifth place for me would be a good achievement but not as great as what we could have done. That's our motivation between now and the end of the season."
