David Beckham reckons Manchester United's current side is just as good as the team that won the Treble in 1999.
Golden boy: David Beckham celebrates the 1999 Champions League triumph
The midfielder was part of the line-up that lifted the Champions League10 years ago and his claims have sparked debate over which team comesout on top.
Sportsmail has analysed the best starting XIs from the 1998-99 seasonand the present day, offering each player a mark out of 10 for theircontribution.
1999
Peter Schmeichel
The Dane's eight years at Manchester United brought five league titlesand he skippered the Red Devils to their Champions League triumph.Schmeichel was one hell of a goalkeeper. 9/10
Gary Neville
A life-long Red, Neville may not be everyone's favourite player but his commitment can never be doubted. 8/10
Jaap Stam
The Dutch defender spent three seasons at Old Trafford and won three Premier League titles. 8/10
Ronny Johnsen
His career was plagued by injuries but the versatile defender, who alsoplayed in midfield for United, was called upon by Ferguson for allUnited's big game. 7/10
Denis Irwin
United's most decorated player, with 13 medals to his name, theIrishman belied his 34 years in the 1999 Champions League final. 8/10
David Beckham
Beckham responded to his critics after being sent off for Englandagainst Argentina in the 1998 World Cup with a wonderful season in aUnited shirt. 8/10
Paul Scholes
Suspended for the Champions League final but an integral part ofFerguson's treble-winning side, Scholes is another one-club man who haswon everything in the game with United. 9/10
Roy Keane
If Ferguson calls you the best he's ever worked with, you must be good.Although suspended for the Nou Camp final, Keane won seven leaguetitles, four FA Cups and the Champions League with United. 9/10
Ryan Giggs
The Welsh wizard was 25 years old in May 1999 and had the speed to match his skill and intelligence on the football field. 9/10
Heroes: Peter Schmeicel and Dwight Yorke
Andy Cole
Cole and Yorke were an unstoppable partnership in 1999, scoring 35league goals between them. Cole took a while to settle at Old Traffordbut remains the second highest scorer in Premier League history behindAlan Shearer. 8/10
Dwight Yorke
The other half of a potent strike partnership, Yorke outdid Cole byjust one goal, finishing the 1998-99 season as United's top leaguegoal-scorer (18 goals). 8/10
Subs:
Teddy Sheringham
Sheringham's starting appearances were limited after Yorke's arrival atOld Trafford, but the 33-year-old still scored goals when it mattered.7/10
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Super sub Solskjaer, the 'Baby-Faced Assassin', scored 12 league goalsfor United in 1998-99 and scored the goal that gave Sir Alex Fergusonhis first Champions League title. 8/10
2009
Edwin van der Sar
The Dutch goalkeeper has gone 14 league game without conceding a goalbut is he better than Schmeichel? No - Van der Sar has a moreimpressive defensive pairing to protect him. 8/10
Gary Neville
The right-back faces stiff competition from Wes Brown and youngsterRafael da Silva but the fully fit club captain, who has made 565appearances for United, would still be Ferguson's first choice. 8/10
Rio Ferdinand
The England defender forms one half of the country's best defensivepairing alongside Vidic and has been fantastic this season. 9/10
Partners in crime: Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand
Nemanja Vidic
Many of you voted him as your Player of the Season so far in our onlinepoll and why not - the Serbian has continued his outstanding form from2007-8 this season. He's also scored six goals for United. 9/10
Patrice Evra
The 'best left-back in the country' according to Sportsmail's MartinSamuel, making it difficult to choose between Irwin's and thephysicality of Evra. The Frenchman edges it, just. 9/10
Darren Fletcher
You complained when our Chief Sports Writer Martin Samuel said Fletcherwas a better player than Liverpool's Javier Mascherano or Xabi Alonso, but 200 United appearances tell their own story. Is he better than RoyKeane or Scholes in their prime? Of course not, but he's still a playerfor the big occasion. 7/10
Timeless: Ryan Giggs
Ryan Giggs
The only player to score in every Premier League season, Giggs'slongevity is a testimony to his professionalism and dedication to thegame. 8/10
Michael Carrick
He's not a midfield goal-scorer in the mould of Giggs or Scholes, butCarrick has become an integral part of Ferguson's plans at OldTrafford. 7/10
Cristiano Ronaldo
What can you say about Ronaldo? He might not be reaching the heights oflast season's utter dominance but he remains one of the PremierLeague's star men. 9/10
Wayne Rooney
'The best young player I have seen in my time' said Ferguson. That'ssome praise when you consider those who have gone before him. 9/10
Dimitar Berbatov
He hasn't quite lived up to expectations since moving to Old Traffordat the start of the season, but the Bulgaria international remains aclassy player and has 12 United goals to his name so far. 7/10
Subs:
Carlos Tevez
A lethal finisher, but will United sign him on a long-term deal whenthey have the likes of Rooney, Berbatov and Ronaldo in their ranks? 7/10
Paul Scholes
Now 34, Scholes is still putting in impressive performances in aManchester United shirt, having retired from international duty toconcentrate on club commitments. Fabio Capello would still look twiceif Scholes made himself available again. 8/10
VERDICT
1999: 106/130
2009: 105/130 |

Manchester United to wear 1909 tribute kit next season - Exclusive
By Nick Owens, sundaymirror.co.uk 18/01/2009
Manchester United will play in a historic strip next season - in honourof a player who helped them win their first major trophy.
Stars including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo will wear theshirts, which feature a large white V-shape sash down the front.
The kit is based upon a 100-year-old design supplied by one of theclub's own players, Billy Meredith, before the 1909 FA Cup Final.
Meredith, nicknamed the "Welsh Wizard", is regarded as football's firstsuperstar and guided United to victory in the Cup and the league titlethe next year.
A century on, United's kit makers Nike have been asked to reworkMeredith's shirt - using high-tech materials rather than heavyweightcotton and with a white sash on a red shirt instead of 1909'sred-on-white.
Meredith, a former Welsh coalminer, earned £4 a week at United - thenthree times a miner's wage but just £298 a week in today's money. As asideline he ran a sports shop and became the club's kit supplier. Forthe Wembley final with Bristol City, both sides had to change fromtheir usual red shirts.
Meredith quickly arranged for a set of white lace-up shirts with a red V to be made, and United went on to win 1-0.
Meredith, who also played for Man City, retired from football in 1924 to open a pub and died in 1958.

United's 'Mr Unsung' who never gets the credit he deserves at Old Trafford!
Posted by: GUEST BLOGGER , on Thu 26 Feb 2009
Football FanCast guest columnist Neil Jenkins feels about time that Darren Fletcher got the credit he deserves at Old Trafford.
You may love or loathe Darren Fletcher but there is no question that he is becoming a key player in the United squad.
Solid, extremely hardworking with great versatility, Fletch has been insensational form this season and however he continually fails to getthe plaudits he so richly deserves. The media plays down hisachievements and cast him as a poor relation, and it seems that is aviewpoint engrained in many United supporters, judging by the reactionto him on various forums and United sites. I personally didn't thinkthere was a better player on the pitch than him last night, but he gothis usual match rating of around 6, while the likes of Giggs, Rio andCarrick took the plaudits. In truth he has been fantastic all seasonand certainly one of the unheralded hero's in the past few months.
So why doesn't Fletcher get the recognition he so rightly deserves, notonly in the eyes of the media, but certain United supporters? I'm notpresident of the Darren Fletcher's appreciation society, but I justfeel it was time the player was given his dues.
Hasn't he warranted them? |
