Ecclestone: I’ll quit if Murdoch comes in

Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that he will depart Formula 1 if a takeover bid for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation proves successful. At present, Ecclestone serves as commercial rights holder for the sport as head of CVC Capital Partners.

First reported by Murdoch-owned Sky News last week, his group is in the initial stages of discussions for a potential takeover of the sport, potentially meaning that the United Kingdom’s television coverage could switch from free-to-air to pay-per-view.

However, Ecclestone has suggested that he would not work alongside the News Corp CEO, who is also 80 years of age.

“I'm old enough to get a pension, so I don't have to get a job,” Ecclestone told The Sunday Times. “I'd have to be sure the people are people I would like to work with and whether they would want to work with me.”

The current Concorde Agreement – which binds F1’s teams with the commercial rights holder and governing body the FIA – will expire at the end of next year.

Indian track named Buddh International Circuit

India’s premier Grand Prix venue has been named the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) ahead of its inaugural Formula 1 event this year. The 5.14-kilometre (3.19-mile) track, designed by Hermann Tilke, will host Round 17 of 19 in late October.

The project, which is being overseen by the Jaypee Group, has been named as such in reference to its surrounding area - Gautam Budh Nagar district near Greater Noida, which is approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) from capital city New Delhi.

The circuit is yet to receive official approval from motorsport governing body the FIA, although full homologation is expected to be granted in July or August.

Pay-per-view F1 a crying shame, says Blundell

Mark Blundell is adamant that pay-per-view F1 television coverage would prove highly unpopular. Talk of such a happening was generated last week as reports circulated that BSkyB owner Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation could soon buy into the sport.

A driver for Ligier, Tyrrell and McLaren between 1993 and 1995, Blundell later became a familiar pundit on ITV’s TV coverage before broadcasts returned to the BBC from 2009.

“Pay-per-view is nothing new for Formula 1 in the UK,” Blundell told GPUpdate.net via telephone, referring to Sky's F1 Digital+ package of 2002.

“We’ve seen it before and it didn’t work, basically. I think it would be a crying shame if it went to that – I think it should be free-to-air access and I think that’s probably what appeals to most of the sponsors and manufacturers.

“To say what’s going to go on with Formula 1…what a question; I think you could have several answers but, ultimately, we have to understand what’s going on with the new Concorde Agreement, which is to be put together very soon (with the current document expiring at the end of 2012).

“There’s a situation in which an investment company owns a product and maybe wants to exit, to get a return on its investment. We’ve got somebody (Bernie Ecclestone) who’s been in Formula 1 for 30-odd years and in some way doesn’t own what he used to but still has the ultimate control, by the looks of it from the outside world.

“There are so many ingredients. Then throw in (governing body) the FIA at the same time and we’ve really got some interesting times ahead of us. So it’s coming to come to a stage when we will get a new owner of Formula 1, that’s for sure, but whether it’s in the short or long-term we’ll have to wait and see.”

Incidentally, it has been confirmed that Blundell will partner fellow ex-F1 racer Johnny Herbert and DTM driver Edoardo Mortara in a Volkswagen Golf for this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hour race in June.

'Free-to-air TV deal would block Murdoch'

Bernie Ecclestone, head of the Formula One Group, has said that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation would be ‘blocked’ if it attempted to buy out Formula 1. According to the current F1 supremo, a deal is in place with the European Commission (EC) to ensure that the sport remains on free-to-air television.

With talk of an entrance from Sky owner Murdoch having been raised a fortnight ago, attention soon switched to the subject of Formula 1 becoming exclusively a pay-per-view package as a result; Ecclestone, though, is adamant that this is not possible.

“I'm sure the European Commission wouldn't let it go through because our agreement with them was to keep F1 on free-to-air television,” Ecclestone told The Independent.

It is believed the deal in question dates back to 1999, with the EC having investigated F1 following claims that Ecclestone and governing body the FIA – then headed by Max Mosley – possessed too much control over the series.

Michael resigns as Coughlan joins Williams

Williams F1 have announced that Technical Director Sam Michael will be leaving the team at the end of the year. Also departing will be Chief Aerodynamicist Jon Tomlinson, with both men having resigned from their positions. In addition, the Grove-based outfit confirms that former McLaren engineer Mike Coughlan has now joined.

After growing up in Australian capital city Canberra, Michael joined Lotus in 1993 before switching to Jordan a year later. In 1999 he served as Ralf Schumacher’s Ralf Engineer before working alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen and celebrating two race wins in 1999. The move to Williams came in 2001, before taking the role of Technical Director from Patrick Head during the 2004 season.

“Both Sam and Jon are talented and driven people who have worked hard for Williams over ten and five years, respectively,” comments Team Principal Sir Frank Williams, who has witnessed the outfit's worst ever start to a Formula 1 season.

“Nonetheless, they have recognised that the team’s performance is not at the level that it needs to be and have resigned in order to give the team the opportunity to regroup and undertake the changes necessary to get back to the front of the grid.

“Both will continue to work in their present positions through until the end of the year to ensure that the team maintains focus and momentum during the 2011 season. We are very grateful to Sam and to Jon for their professional approach.”

Incidentally, Coughlan’s recruitment as Chief Engineer marks the Englishman’s return to Formula 1, having lost his job at McLaren after the highly controversial ‘Spygate’ scandal of 2007.

Returning Coughlan ‘grateful’ to Frank Williams

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Mike Coughlan is to return to Formula 1, having been sacked by McLaren following the controversial ‘Spygate’ scandal of four years ago. The Englishman fills the role of Chief Engineer, with both Sam Michael and Jon Tomlinson leaving the team at the end of the year.

In 2007, Coughlan’s name was at the epicentre of ‘Spygate’ – the public episode which resulted in McLaren being thrown out of the Constructors’ World Championship and handed a 100-million dollar fine for possessing a technical dossier containing details of Ferrari’s car, provided by Nigel Stepney.

Since losing his job, Coughlan has worked on the Ocelot Light Protected Patrol Vehicle project and is currently working for NASCAR’s Michael Waltrip Racing.

“I am grateful to Williams for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “My experience in 2007 was life-changing. Since then, I have endeavoured to put my skills to good use in the design of the Ocelot vehicle whose purpose is to transport soldiers in safety.

“I have also enjoyed my time with Michael Waltrip Racing; they are an excellent race team and I wish them well for the future. Now, I am looking forward to returning to a sport which I love and to joining a team that I have admired for many years.

“I will dedicate myself to the team and to ensuring that we return to competitiveness while respecting the ethical standards with which Williams has always been synonymous.”

Team Principal Sir Frank Williams also acknowledges Coughlan’s infamous past:

“Mike Coughlan is a fine engineer with extensive experience across Formula 1 and both civil and defence engineering. He left Formula 1 in 2007 because of conduct which he acknowledges was wrong and which he profoundly regrets. His two year ban from the sport expired some time ago and Mike is now determined to prove himself again.”

I could move teams in future, says Webber

Mark Webber remains open to the possibility of switching teams later in his career, with his existing Red Bull contract ending after 2011. The Australian, now in his tenth Formula 1 campaign, is currently on a one-year deal with the Milton Keynes outfit.

Webber and Team Principal Christian Horner confirmed the single season deal in 2010, electing to continue on a year-by-year basis while assessing performances.

“I have my flaws, but I am determined,” Webber told Italian publication La Stampa. “Last year I fought for the title and I want to try again. I am relaxed and feel I could do it.

“When the season ends, so will my contract with Red Bull. But I don’t think that any re-signing depends only on results. I just want to win.

“We'll see. If the team doesn’t want me anymore, I will have to answer a good question: Whether to hang up my helmet or change team.”

Metallica to perform at India’s F1 Rocks

Metallica will be performing at India’s first ever F1 Rocks concert this October, it has been confirmed by the American heavy metal band.

‘At this stage in the game, there are very few places in the world that we have not dragged our gear and crew to, so that makes this show announcement extra special,’ reads a message on the Metallica website. ‘For the first time ever, we will be visiting India for two shows! It’s about time, wouldn’t you say?!?!’

F1 Rocks will be held in capital city New Delhi on Friday 28 October, with a further performance scheduled for the Los Angeles group on race day Sunday in Bangalore.

Fortune, fame, mirror vain, gone insane but the memory remains

Heavy rings on fingers wave
Another star denies the grave
See the nowhere crowd cry the nowhere tears of honour
Like twisted vines that grow
Hide and swallow mansions whole
And dim the light of an already faded Prima Donna
Fortune, fame, mirror vain, gone insane
Fortune, fame, mirror vain, gone insane but the memory remains
