Tak ingat gosip tu,
Gosip yang aiol ingat dari forumner - yang katanya abang sepupu sheol skendel ngan Tiz walau dah tunang. Memang tido sesama. Pastu kezen tu yang putuskan bila nak nikah, mashalahnya Tiz takleh move on. Siap calling2 kezen sheol di hari nikah dok goda kata rindu la, ajak jumpa bagai. Lupa nama forumner tu, kalau tak boleh juga seru. |

YOU can’t help but walk away from an interview with songstress Camelia Khalid and HER SECOND COUSIN, fashion designer Datuk Tom Abang Saufi with a sense of empowerment.
It’s as if the world is yours to conquer, believing that all you need is the passion to push your ideas forward.
Cliché as it may sound, but one can’t help but be drawn into the duo’s exuberance.
First, there’s Camelia, 35, whose style is really not idle chat. Nonetheless, you can sense a quiet resolve that lies within her elegant demeanour.
Then of course you have the bubbly energy of Tom, 55, who, despite two decades in the fashion industry, displays an infectious excitement about her trade.
It would take a very disillusioned soul to leave One Jalan Eaton, the address of Tom’s boutique in Kuala Lumpur, without having some of that positive energy rub off on you.
Having witnessed the interaction between the two, as well as the input from Camelia’s manager and Tom’s sister Magie Abang Saufi, one can imagine that discussions amongst them would surely be a hotbed for creative ideas.
Thus, it comes as no surprise when Camelia says this was exactly how her latest project, the launch of her eponymous bag collection, came about.
Camelia successfully debuted her creations at the Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) last November alongside the presentation of Tom’s collection.
“I am very grateful to AUNTY TOM for giving me the platform,” says the beautiful Sarawakian during an interview at One Eaton.
Creating her own bag collection is something that she had been contemplating for a while. But it was on a day not unlike the day of the interview that it went into fruition.
“It was just over lunch,” explains Camelia, who made her singing debut in 1997.
“We were discussing it and AUNTY TOM asked ‘Why not do something about it? Let’s do it together’.”
As the “make it happen” gene happens to be part of their DNA, it wasn’t long before the wheels were set in motion.
“It’s all about speed,” says Tom.
Before you know it, there was a first batch of 30 bags and then came the next set of 52 which debuted at the IFF.
The bags which Camelia describes as being “part glamorous and part rock and roll” were the perfect accessory to Tom’s striking collection.
The bags which were themed “Mekar” (which means blossom in Malay) feature a variety of clutch bags, totes and satchels in bright as well as classic colours.
What was most interesting about the collaboration was that it reflected a meeting of minds.
“Throughout the years, I have always known Camelia to have the same goals and journey in terms of design as me,” says Tom.
“Basically we have the same interests in the same things. When I look at some of the things she wears, I would have the same inclinations if I were younger.”
But that’s to be expected since Tom has always been an influence on Camelia. Even as a child, Camelia remembers telling her art teacher that the fashion designer she admired most was Tom Abang Saufi.
Tom, who wanted to be a couturier from an early age, must surely have made quite an impression on the younger members of her family.
As a young girl, Tom tie-dyed her father’s t-shirts, cut up her brother’s jeans and defied school regulations wearing a corduroy mini instead of the typical school uniform skirt. |

Cuma confuse, camelia dgn tom/maggie tu second cousin once removed ke memang second cousin? Haha sebab camelia panggil aunty. If same generation second cousin patut panggil akak la kan?
Kalau dalam bahasa kita second cousin meaning dua pupu la right?
