ONE man had 15 credit cards. Though he and his wife earned about $6,000 monthly, they splurged on $16,000 holidays.

  
Another man gave his wife's family a $10,000 dowry despite earning only $1,500. Within a year, they had bought a condo and spent heavily on renovations.

Both men ended up declaring themselves bankrupt, a trend that worries the Ministry of Law's Insolvency and Public Trustees Office (Ipto).

As these two examples (see report on facing page) show, becoming a bankrupt no longer seems to be a mark of shame.

Instead, many these days see it as a possible escape route from their financial woes and creditors.

They willingly declare themselves bankrupt, because they think this will be a quick way out of their financial troubles.

Ipto is concerned that these people view bankruptcy as a solution rather than something to avoid.

It said the number of people who declared themselves bankrupt jumped nearly 40 times, from 24 in 1999 to 941 last year.

Up to May this year, 313 people had declared themselves bankrupt - many aged between 30 and 50.

And almost two out of every three of them went bust because they were trying to keep up with the Joneses.

They overspent in trying to keep up a standard of living that they could ill afford.

A spokesman for the Official Assignee said they discourage debtors from using self-petitions by offering pre-bankruptcy mediation services.

'Many of these self-petitioned bankrupts are under the mistaken impression that by declaring themselves bankrupts, they would not have to pay their debts and would get an automatic discharge,' she said.

Bankrupts have to give up a part of any money they earn, and their rights to own anything, or travel, can be severely restricted.

To prevent abuses of the system, she added that the Self-Petition Management Team scrutinises cases involving those who file for self-bankruptcy, especially if they claim they have no means to pay their debts.

Instead, she said debtors should opt for mediation services so that they could find mutually acceptable arrangements with their creditors and avoid being made a bankrupt.

Last year, the Pre-Bankruptcy Advisory and Mediation Centre, which was set up by the Official Assignee in 2002, helped 1,700 debtors.

As someone who comes across many of these cases, lawyer Noor Mohamed Marican is concerned about these figures because many bankrupts, who are in the prime of their working life, appear to choose self-bankruptcy as a quick way out.

Mr Noor Mohamed was a key speaker at a financial planning conference, Money and You, organised by Berita Harian and the SSA Consulting Group, yesterday. In an earlier interview, he told The New Paper that nine in every 10 bankruptcy cases were caused by non-business-related expenses.

And the majority of these people had overspent on their credit facilities, especially credit cards.

'Singaporeans also have a high percentage of household debt, and many want to declare bankruptcy because they think they won't have to pay their debts and will get an automatic discharge (from their debt obligations) as long as they declare themselves bankrupts,' he said.

'The courts are concerned about this possible abuse.'

Mr Noor Mohamed added: 'Many people do not want to lose out to their neighbours or colleagues. So they pay huge sums to renovate their homes, buy a car or cars, and other items that are often unnecessary.

'With credit cards being mostly easily available, they accumulate the cards and use them to maintain a credit lifestyle. They get taken in by the low interest rates stated and easy terms.

'Sometimes they use one credit card to pay off the debt due on another card.'

The lawyer targets most of his advice at the Malay-Muslims here because he feels they are likely to get caught in a 'credit lifestyle'.

According to Ipto, Malays form 12.7 per cent of undischarged bankrupts here, the second-largest group after the Chinese.

Mr Noor Mohamed said: 'The attitude of tak mahu kalah (do not want to lose out in Malay) is particularly strong among the Malays here. Many of them believe in paying by instalments to maintain a lifestyle.

'To complicate matters, they also marry young and many have four to six kids per family.

'About one out of every three Malay marriages here will end in divorce, and they tend to re-marry soon after the first marriage. Such acts increase the financial burden after divorce and lead to bankruptcy. When one is bankrupt, he cannot educate his children well.'

He added: 'My advice to couples, especially Malay-Muslim ones, is not to spend so much money on their wedding and household expenses.

'Couples with tight finances should put their marriage on probation financially for at least the first three years and draw up a household budget to control spending.

'After that, they can spend more if they feel confident about their finances. They do not need to spend too much on renovation loans and should not accumulate credit card debts.'

Mr Noor Mohamed advised people to get loans from banks or finance companies instead of loansharks or unscrupulous renovation contractors.

He said: 'People harassed by loansharks should go to the police and lodge police reports.'

He said help is available for bankrupts and potential bankrupts.

For instance, he said judges at the Family Court are known to tell parties to go for counselling sessions for not just broken marriages, but also for lavish credit lifestyles.

A bankrupt also attends courses and seminars to learn to better manage his finances.

Help is also available from community development councils, family service centres, the Community Addiction Management Programme and social agencies.

For example, Credit Counselling Singapore (CCS) gives advice and help to the financially distressed.

Its spokesman said it helps debtors by having them attend talks and counselling sessions and works out debt repayment plans for them.

She said: 'The main reason for their debts is maintaining a lifestyle unsuitable for them.

'Other reasons include acting as guarantors, gambling, servicing loans, paying for expenses after having been retrenched and paying for medical treatment.'

Flashy lifestyle, dire consequences

LAWYER Noor Mohamed highlighted these real-life accounts to prove his point that overspending can lead to horrible consequences.

A lawyer swindled 12 clients of $1.6 million over seven years so that he could spend the money on investments, his housing loan, maintaining three cars and expenses for his two families.

Mr Noor Mohamed said: 'No restitution was made. The lawyer faced 13 charges, was sentenced to seven years' jail and his family life was destroyed.'

The lawyer, he said, borrowed from loansharks to maintain his expensive lifestyle, and claimed that he had also made bad investments to the tune of $500,000.


A 41-year-old production supervisor earned $4,000 monthly, but he had 15 credit cards.

After his marriage, Mr Noor Mohamed said, the couple had a combined monthly income of nearly $6,000, but they spent nearly $16,000 annually on vacations and ended up with debts of nearly $200,000.

Mr Noor Mohamed said: 'They soon divorced and the man will soon remarry. But he has to pay nearly $13,400 a month to service his debt.'

Unable to cope, he filed for bankruptcy.


A service assistant in his 20s who was earning $1,500 a month gave his wife's family a $10,000 dowry. Mr Noor Mohamed said: 'Within a year of their marriage, the couple bought a condominium and had a $23,000 renovation loan, paid in monthly instalments of $1,200. They could not cope with expenses and divorced.

'The legal fee was $4,000 and the man is paying $1,800 per month to settle his debts of close to $15,000.'

The man made himself a bankrupt.

Jangan harapkan cinta sebagai balasan. Nantikan
sahaja ia untuk mekar di dalam hati mereka tapi
sekiranya ia tidak, pastikanlah ia terus mekar di
dalam hati anda. Ia cuma mengambil masa seminit
untuk jatuh hati pada seseorang, satu jam untuk
menyukai seseorang, satu hari untuk menyintai
seseorang tetapi ia mengambil masa sepanjang hidup
untuk melupakan seseorang.

Jangan pandang kepada kecantikan kerana boleh jadi
ianya palsu. Jangan kejar kemewahan kerana ianya akan
susut. Carilah seseorang yang membuatkan anda tersenyum
kerana ia cuma memerlukan sekuntum senyuman untuk
mencerahkan hari yang suram. Carilah yang membuatkan
hati anda tersenyum. Akan tiba satu ketika di dalam
kehidupan apabila anda teramatkan rindukan seseorang

memiliki segala yang terbaik. Mereka hanya membuat

mereka yang terluka, mereka yang telah mencari dan
mereka yang telah mencuba. Hanya mereka yang boleh
menghargai kepentingan manusia yang telah menyentuh

dengan ciuman dan berakhir dengan tangisan.

Tersebutlah kisah satu pasangan yg baru berkahwin.
Sehari sebelum upacara
akad nikah.... Emak pengantin lelaki menasihati
anaknya...."Nak apabila menghampiri isteri mu pada
malam pertama....maka kamu harus kata ...Kapal terbang
ingin mendarat". Emak pengantin perempuan pula
menasihati naknya.... "Nak....bila suami mu berkata
kapal terbang ingin mendarat....maka
jawabnya....Lapangan terbang sudah sedia ". Hari yg
ditunggu-tunggu pun tiba....Si suami tak sabar-sabar
dan pabila
malam tiba....hatinya berdebar-debar..... Dia
mendekati si isteri lalu
mengatakan "Kapal terbang ingin mendarat" Si isteri
seperti tidak faham
dan berkata "Saya penat bang ...mari kita
tidur." Si suami hampa....namun dalam hatinya
berkata..."Tak apa mungkin
isteri aku malu....beri dia peluang kedua"

Tiba malam kedua "Si suami mendekati si isteri dan
bertanya lagi "Kapal
terbang ingin mendarat." Malangnya si isteri masih
tidak faham .....kerana
suaminya ketika itu memegang surat khabar...dalam
hatinya berkata...."Berita apa pula ini....Ah
pedulilah kapal terbang mana nak mendarat pun....tak
ada kena mengena dengan saya." Kemudian dia berkata
kepada si suami "Sudah lah tu bang ....janganlah baca
surat khabar lagi....mari kita tidur " Si suami hampa
lagi....tetapi dalam hatinya berkata "Tak apalah esok
masih ada."

Tiba malam ketiga ....Si suami sekali lagi dengan
penuh harapan dan begitu
pasti malam ini pasti aku dapat...lalu mendekati si
isteri dan bertanya lagi "Kapal terbang ingin
mendarat." Si isteri menjenguk ke arah luar jendela
dan menggelengkan kepala sambil dalam hati berkata
"Mana ada kapal terbang !!" Melihatkan si isteri
menggelengkan kepala ....si suami hampa dan berkata
dalam hati "Kejamnya isteriku....membiarkan aku
menunggu
selama 3 hari tapi masih enggan memberikannya kepada
ku." Si suami dengan muka yg masam terus tidur tanpa
mengajak si isteri.

Keesokan harinya si isteri bertanya kepada ibunya "Ibu
kenapa suami saya
setiap malam berkata ...kapal terbang ingin mendarat??
Si ibu pun berkata
"Apa yg kamu jawab nak ? Si anak berkata "Saya tidak
jawab apa-apa...Si ibu berkata lagi...."Apa anak sudah
lupa apa yg ibu nasihatkan tentang malam
pertama....sepatunya anak menjawab Lapangan Terbang
sudah sedia....sebagai tanda bersetuju " Oh saya lupa
lah ibu....tak apa malam ini saya pasti akan menjawab
dengan betul"

Maka tiba malam keempat .....si suami seperti tidak
menunjukkan apa-apa
tanda dia akan bertanya soalan yg sama. Malam kian
larut ....si isteri tertanya-tanya....bilakah gerangan
si suami akan bertanya.....Si isteri akhirnya berkata
dalam hati "Mengapa harus aku tunggu
lagi.....apa salahnya aku sendiri meng`offer' kan diri
Lalu si isteri pun
mendekati si suami dan terus berkata "Lapangan terbang
sudah sedia", Si
suami kerana terlalu geram dengan si isteri....dengan
muka yg masam
menjawab "KAPAL TERBANG ROSAK"

Bapa Pengemis, Tiga-tiga Anak kat Universiti!


GEMPARRRR...!

Membaca artikel mengenai pengemis sebelum ini, teringat saya satu  kisah.

Walaupun berpendapatan tetap, kita sering  mengeluh, harga minyak dan
barangan semakin  naik, hal anak-anak nak bersekolah lagi. Tapi tahukah
anda, ada seseorang yang menjadi  pengemis tetapi mampu embesarkan
anak-anaknya, sehingga anak-anak  tersebut berjaya berada di universiti?
Ketika itu, saya masih menuntut di sebuah  kolej di Sunway.

Saya sedang berjalan keluar  daripada perpustakaan kolej saya ketika saya melihat seorang pengemis tua, dalam lingkungan umur 50-an, sedang duduk meminta sedekah. Selalunya, saya hanya  memberi wang kepada mereka dan terus berlalu. Entah kenapa, mungkin mood saya tengah baik dan saya pun tiada rushing nak ke mana-mana.  Saya lalu berbual2  dengan hamba Allah tersebut.

Saya :Sudah lama mengemis,  pakcik?

Pengemis : Ya...lebih kurang sudah 8 tahun ,  nak.

Saya : Wah, sudah lama juga ya pakcik..sehari biasanya  dapat berapa
pakcik?

Pengemis : Paling sedikit RM50.00 nak .

Saya : Banyak juga ya pakcik??

Pengemis : Bolehlah nak, untuk keluarga...

Saya : Ohhhh.....keluarga pakcik ada di mana?

Pengemis : Isteri pakcik meninggal lama dah. Anak pakcik pulak  semuanya ada 3  orang, tiga-tiga lelaki. Yang pertama ada di Universiti Putra Malaysia di Serdang tu.  Yang  kedua ada di Universiti Utara Malaysia di Kedah nun, dan yang ketiga  di Universiti  Sains Malaysia di Pulau Pinang.

Saya  :Wahh..hebat-hebat keluarga pakcik ni...boleh tahan juga yerrr..

Penegmis: (Sambil tersenyum ;-) Biasalah nak. Anak pun pandai  apa,
sekolah kat  sini?

Saya: (Membalas senyuman..^_^..) Pakcik ni.. So anak  pakcik tu semuanya masih kuliah?

Pengemis : Tak  arrrrrr....semuanya mengemis seperti pakcik....

Saya: Cisss.. Hampehhhhhh..!!!!

Assalamualaikumwarahmatullah!

SAYA mahu berkongsi ilmu dan pengalaman. Baru-baru ini saya menghadiri
ceramah Ustaz Abdullah Mahmood.

Ustaz ini memang tak kedekut ilmu. Ada aja tips yang akan diberi kepada
sesiapa yang menghadiri ceramahnya.

Tidak rugi kita mendengar ceramahnya. Ada sedikit ilmu yang ingin saya
kongsi bersama-sama dengan pembaca semua.

Rupa-rupanya tanpa kita sedar, dalam makanan yang kita makan
sehari-hari,
kita tak boleh main 'balun' saja.

Sebab itulah terjadinya penyakit kencing manis, lumpuh, sakit jantung,
keracunan makanan dan penyakit-penyakit lain apabila kita telah
menginjak
usia, bermula usia 40-an.

Apabila pembaca telah mengetahui ilmu ini, tolonglah ajarkan kepada
orang
lain pula.

Ini pun adalah diet Rasulullah (s.a.w.) juga. Ustaz Abdullah Mahmood
kata,
Rasulullah tak pernah sakit perut sepanjang hayatnya kerana pandai jaga
pemakanan baginda sehari-hari.

Apa kata kita ikut diet ini wahai pembaca, tak payahlah susah-susah
makan
pil untuk kurus! Insya-Allah kalau pembaca ikut diet Rasulullah ini
berbahagialah anda.

1. Jangan makan SUSU + DAGING

2. Jangan makan DAGING + IKAN

3. Jangan makan IKAN + SUSU

4. Jangan makan AYAM + SUSU

5. Jangan makan IKAN + TELUR

6. Jangan makan IKAN + DAUN SALAD

7. Jangan makan SUSU + CUKA

8. Jangan makan BUAH + SUSU contoh koktel, jangan makan buah-buahan
selepas
makan nasi, sebaliknya makan buah-buahan terlebih dahulu, selepas itu
baru
makan nasi.

9. Tidur satu jam selepas makan tengah hari.

10. Jangan sesekali tinggal makan malam. Sesiapa yang tinggal makan
malam,
dia akan dimakan usia dan kolesterol dalam badan akan berganda.


Nampak memanglah pelik... tapi, cubalah...ia amat berkesan terutama
apabila
sudah tua nanti. Wassalam.
