Gritty Valencia earn a point
Barcelona and Valencia both lost their 100% records in La Liga, after playing out a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou on Sunday night.
David Villa gave Valencia the lead after 14th minutes, before substitute Andreas Iniesta levelled things up just after half-time in what was a largely disappointing contest.
The result was still enough to put Barca back on top of La Liga table, but despite remaining unbeaten, Valencia now find themselves only third with Real Madrid having leapfrogged them on goal difference this weekend.
Fernando Morientas has scored five times already this season for Valencia but he started the Barca game on the bench, with Villa played as a lone striker up front.
That decision was justified in the 17th minute when Villa put Valencia in front.
The goal was an illustration of Valencia's passing style at its slickest, with some lovely crisp play eventually finding Miguel bombing down the right wing in space.
The Portuguese right-back then whipped across a perfect low cross which flew in between the Barca defence and Victor Valdes, and straight into the patch of Villa who then made no mistake with a close range finish.
Villa then almost doubled the visitor's advantage just two minutes before the break, when some great skill saw the Spanish international skip past Rafael Marquez, before unleashing powerful effort that cannoned off the post.
Barcelona on the other hand could get nothing going in attack, with a Ronaldinho free that was well saved by Santigao Canizares in the 28th minute being the best that they could muster.
After such a lifeless first-half performance, Frank Rijkaard must have known that he had to do something to shake things up at half-time and he decided to make an adventurous move in midfield where he replaced Edmilson with the more attack-minded Andreas Iniesta.
The decision proved to be a masterstroke by Rijkaard as within three minutes of coming on Iniesta had levelled things up.
The goal came when Ronaldinho's crossed picked out Samuel Eto'o in the box, Eto'o then nodded the ball down to Iniesta who had made a great run from deep, and his finish matched the quality of the move.
Barcelona continued to play a much more lively game for the remainder of the second-half but Valencia were magnificently well organised and that kept chances at a premium.
Canizares was also in fine form, with his spectacular save of a curling Deco effort in the 59th minute being the best of a number of smart saves he made during the game.
In an attempt to try and snatch a late winner Barcelona brought Javier Saviola on for his first Barca appearance in two and half years, but although he had a half chance three minutes from time, his impact was minimal.
Instead, the well drilled Valencia side held on for a deserved point, which should keep their spirits high before their big Champions League game at home to Roma this Wednesday. |
