Get paid for recycling electronic waste

KUALA LUMPUR: Recycling electronic waste (e-waste) will soon earn you money.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is looking at a scheme which will see the public getting paid for recycling e-waste such as batteries, computers and mobile phones.

Deputy Minister Datuk S. Sothinathan said yesterday the incentive plan was being formulated by the Solid Waste Management Department and the Department of Environment.

"There is a growing amount of household e-waste that winds up unnoticed at landfills," he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Masterskill College of Nursing and Health and the Liverpool John Moores University.

Sothinathan also launched the college抯 environmental health laboratory and World Environment Day celebration.

He said few Malaysians traded in their electronic goods or hired agents to transport the used items to the Bukit Nanas incinerator, adding that most resorted to storing or dumping the hazardous materials, risking fires, explosions and electrocution.

He said consumers should prepare for a price hike as prices of gadgets may rise to cover the scrapping and recovery costs of electronic retailers.

"We are also talking to manufacturers, like Nokia, about making their electronic components more recyclable.

"But this also means extra cost.

"It could also mean tax exemptions but nothing is final yet," Sothinathan added.

Minyak mentah Petronas bocor, cemari Sg Lutong
08-08-2007

Sungai Gatom area now 'clean'

KUALA LUMPUR: After the evacuation of 700 people and the closure of six schools, the thousands of tonnes of toxic waste around the Sungai Gatom area have finally been cleaned up.

It took nearly 20 months for the clean-up process to be completed.

The massive clean-up closes the chapter on the infamous illegal toxic waste dump site in Labis, Johor, which saw the initial evacuation of the residents and the closure of the schools.

The schools were later re-opened and the residents allowed to return home.

Department of Environment director-general Datuk Rosnani Ibarahim said yesterday that it had cost RM5 million to clear up the 11,000 tonnes of aluminium dross from the river banks and surrounding areas.

Rosnani was speaking to reporters at a press conference held on the second day of the Waste Management Conference and Exhibition 2007 here. Also present was Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk S. Sothinathan.

It was initially estimated that only about 500 tonnes of toxic waste had been dumped at the Sungai Gatom area.

But scheduled waste treatment facility, Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd, which was hired to clean up the site, later found that the dump site was three metres deep.

The waste had been dumped in the area since December 2005 by a contractor hired by a chemical company in Malacca.

Sothinathan, meanwhile, warned offenders that the mandatory jail sentence would take effect soon.

finally! glad to read about this -
hopefully no more toxic waste been dumped there anymore -=

Mesti kata penduduk Semenyih kotor.

RDF ni pun keberkesanan dia masih belum terbukti.

Pencemaran sisa jubin musnah tangkapan nelayan
11-08-2007

after all this time - still syarikat pembinaan tu masih ignorat regarding sisa2

kadang2 tak faham syarikat2 yang take advantage of this kind of thing --
i hope it will be charged with STIFF penalty and hopefully the river
can be cleaned soon for the sake of those fishermen whom lost
their income because of the irresponsibilities of this company! -

1,000 families affected by oil leakage
11-08-2007
By STEPHEN THEN

MIRI: An oil pipeline leak near the oil refinery bridge along the Lutong River on Wednesday has affected some 1,000 riverine families.

The villagers from Kampung Senadin, Kampung Api Api and Kampung Batu Satu, located some 20kms from here, had complained of vomiting, headaches and breathing difficulties due to the oil patches along the riverbanks and beaches.

They voiced their concern to Senadin assemblyman Lee Kim Shin who urged the authorities to make sure that Petronas carried out the cleaning job at the polluted stretch.

"The oil pollutants are in the process of being cleared. Hopefully, the environmental damage would be minimal.

"The villages have piped-water supply and they do not rely on the river water for drinking, so this would not pose any serious danger to health," said Lee.

Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd said in a statement that operations at its plant in West Lutong field plant was stopped due to a leak in a pipeline that transports crude oil from the offshore platform to the Miri Crude Oil terminal. Production resumed on Thursday.

It said oil from the production platform was now being transported to the terminal via a new pipeline which has a net capacity to transport 40,000 barrels of crude oil per day, similar to the old pipeline.

It said cleaning up operation was progressing well and most of the oil spill had been recovered.

It said that more resources had been mobilised to speed up the operation which was carried out round the clock.

Miri Department of Environment officers were also at the site to supervise the operations.

Its chief Norina Frederick Sambung said the oil company placed a barrier across the river mouth to prevent any oil slicks from polluting the South China Sea and its marine resources.

Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board enforcement chief Dania Goyog said the spill would not create any long-term damage to the environment as it had been contained.

------------------------------------------------------------

how come chief of SNREB Enforcement said that no damage - and yet
the people in miri already have breathing difficulties, head-ache and
vomiting problem since the pipeline leaked -

petronas hafta take a full responsibilities upon this leakage and should
take better precaution regarding this environmental issue -

POLLUTED RIVERS: Raise awareness to save environment

Yet another polluted river. Despite spending millions to clean up such
rivers, apathy continues to rear its ugly head

Yet another polluted river. Despite spending millions to clean up such rivers, apathy continues to rear its ugly head.

EVERY year, the government spends millions to clean up the rivers and drains but it does not get the desired results as our people are still selfish and irresponsible.

To clean up the rivers again and again is like dumping money into a bottomless pit.

I live close to a big monsoon drain and it has become a dumping ground for residents. There are broken bricks, furniture, buckets and plastic materials in it.

Two years ago, the authorities spent thousands of ringgit to clean a short stretch of the drain and now it is back to square one. Why?

There is no proper enforcement. The residents are irresponsible and selfish. They have a habit of throwing everything into the drain.

Many households here do not even have dustbins. We have rules and laws against littering but they are never followed or enforced.

The media and politicians must help to educate the people in order to save the environment.

There must be effective enforcement. Impose fines on residents who do not have dustbins to hold their rubbish.

Contractors must clear the rubbish after finishing their projects and they should be punished for leaving heaps of stones and bricks around.

Another suggestion is to have a collection centre for rubbish in each housing estate.

Residents should be rewarded for bringing the rubbish to the centre.

Likewise, residents must pay for the rubbish to be collected from their houses. Try it. It may work. Recycling will be made easy this way.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

again and again - the pollution of river, ocean, sound, environment
being a main issue of malaysian --

it could never be solved when there's no awareness among the society
and community dealing with the pollution -

foreigners come and visit malaysia - will see this for  themselves how malaysian
can't respect their own places --  never pick up the rubbish and the river that
so polluted full of garbages thrown by irresponsible people --

how to raise such an awareness?  all from within yourself -- people who has
self respect - will understand the depth of taking of environment and respect the
nature -   it is a shame when we ourselves can't even respect our own home and yet
expected to have a clean and fresh environment --

take care of your own home, - take care of your own garbages - respect your surrounding
pay attention to your environment and have a sense of pride to maintain the standard
cleanliness of your environment -

Illegal waste-dumping by approved collectors

KAPAR: Week-long surveillance by the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has found garbage collection contractors from at least three local authorities dumping waste illegally at a plot of land in Kampung Bukit Kapar here.

揂ll the councils responsible have been told to check the registration numbers of the lorries photographed to identify the contractors involved and we will terminate their contracts immediately,

Gambar sebatang sungai bersebelahan kilang tempat aku keje sekarang.

Jepun 40 dulu pun sungai dia kotor jugak.
