Real Betis 1-2 Valencia
A David Villa double gave Valencia a narrow 2-1 victory over struggling Real Betis which sees Los Che edge closer to securing a Champions League berth.
The match seemed to be heading for a goaless draw before Villa scored his first in the 65th minute and added a second 14 minutes later.
Ricardo Oliveira grabbed one back three minutes from time for the hosts to set up a nervy finale.
Betis should have equalised in the dying seconds and Capi's miss could prove costly for them in their battle for Primera Division safety as Los Verdiblancos remain in 10th place but, in a tight bottom half of the table, are just seven points above the drop zone having played a game more.
Villa's stunning form continues and the Spain striker has now notched 35 goals in all competitions, with 25 of them coming in the league, and this win sent Valencia five points clear of fifth-placed Malaga following a sixth successive victory.
The visitors started the brighter and had the first sight on goal in the seventh minute but Villa's shot from just outside the area never looked like causing Ricardo undue difficulty and the Betis goalkeeper caught it easily.
With both teams desperate for points for very different reasons it was an equal game at the Ruiz de Lopera with both teams looking attack-minded but struggling to create real chances.
Alberto Rivera should have put Betis ahead shortly after the half-hour mark with the best chance of the first half but his 20-yard effort flew wide of the right hand post.
That seemed to inject a sense of belief into the hosts who went even closer five minutes from the interval when Mark Gonzalez saw his close-range header astonishingly tipped round the post by Valencia goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez.
Valencia were struggling to create anything and the hosts looked likelier to make the breakthrough.
However, Betis almost shot themselves in the foot on the hour mark as Oliveira was lucky to stay on the pitch following a horrific challenge on Joaquin.
Their relief was shortlived as just five minutes later they found themselves behind when Juan Mata crossed in towards Villa to backheel it into the back of the net.
Mata should have scored himself in the 78th minute but he headed the ball onto the post.
However, Valencia doubled their lead moments later when Joaquin sent a great pass through to Edu who rolled the ball across for Villa to tap into an empty net from six yards out.
Betis coach Jose Maria Nogues sent on Juanma for the final 10 minutes and he had an instant effect as a stunning pass from him set up Oliveira who hooked the ball past Cesar.
The hosts should have equalised in the second minute of stoppage time as Edu raced down the right flank before crossing in towards the onrushing Capi who hit his effort with power but smashed it straight into Valencia defender Hedwiges Maduro.
So desperate were Betis to snatch a point that goalkeeper Ricardo raced up field for a corner but it was not to be and Nogues suffered his first defeat as Los Verdiblancos coach following his appointment at the beginning of the month.![](static/image/smiley/default/lol.gif) |

La Liga - Valencia share spoils with Barcelona
A late Thierry Henry goal helped Barcelona claim a 2-2 draw in an entertaining Liga clash at Valencia.
Henry levelled with five minutes remaining after goals from Hedwiges Maduro and Pablo Hernandez put the hosts 2-1 up.
Lionel Messi had opened the scoring midway through the first half.
The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges with Barca seeming sluggish and half-interested.
But Los Che failed to create any clear-cut chances and Barca took the lead on 24 minutes.
A fluid passing move resulted in a give-and-go between Andres Iniesta and Messi that culminated with the Argentina slotting the ball home from eight yards out.
LosCules then picked up the pace and settled into their classicball-hogging rhythm although they did not force home goalkeeper CesarSanchez to make any saves.
The hosts equalised against the run of play when poor defending by Barca from a Ruben Baraja free-kick allowed little David Silva a header that Victor Valdes tipped over.
The corner that followed saw more chaos in the visiting defence as Carles Puyol impeded his own keeper to allow Hedwiges Maduro to bundle the ball over the line from close range on 43 minutes.
Barca'sfirst-half implosion was complete less than two minutes later whenPablo Hernandez played a one-two with Silva and was allowed to waltzinto the box by Puyol and Dani Alves before slipping a cool low finishpast Valdes.
The Liga leaders came out for the restart with atouch more purpose but laboured to create opportunities with Valenciaresolute and at times overly-aggressive at the back.
On thehour mark Los Che had a good chance to extend their lead on the counterattack but Silva's low ball to the unmarked Villa was intercepted byValdes.
Valencia were then almost punished for losing focuswhen they argued with the ref claiming a penalty when Villa dived, withBarca breaking but Messi's touch letting him down.
Henry -rested after his exploits in Barca's 4-0 win over Sevilla in midweek -was brought on as a sub and almost made an immediate impact with twoshots on target that Cesar did well to save.
Barca pressed andpressed and eventually it paid off. Iniesta won a free-kick on the leftwing which Messi swung in. Cesar flapped, the loose ball fell to Henryand he hooked the ball into the empty net via a deflection off defenderRaul Albiol.
Valenciawere furious, claiming a foul by Sergio Busquets on Cesar, but theformer Tottenham goalkeeper was faking a head injury as the youngmidfielder did not even touch him and referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez wascorrect to allow the goal to stand.
In their desperation tograb a winner, Barca left themselves hugely open to the counter attackand Valencia had three good, late chances to win the match.
FirstVilla forced a superb reflex stop from Valdes at his near post with astunning first-time, left-foot volley from a long ball.
The visitors failed to clear the corner that followed and Alexis sent a fizzing drive whistling just wide.
And,deep into injury time, Villa was denied a clear run on goal when, afterhis side cleared a corner, he was incorrectly judged offside as -despite being past the last defender - he was in his own half when theball was played.
A draw was a fair result, putting Barca sevenpoints clear of second-placed Real Madrid and Valencia four pointsbeyond fifth-placed Villarreal.
