Amisha Patel plays Sanjay Dutt's wife in Tathastu
It is a father's struggle to fight against the immunity and numbness of the society towards the injustice done to his daughter.
Amisha Patel plays Sanjay Dutt's wife. Jayaprada kind of makes a comeback with this film (she was last seen in forgettable role in Khakee). Gulshan Grover plays the bad man.
Tathastu was completed in a record span of less than a month (Sanju has never completed a film so fast). The film is targeted for a Diwali release.

Kareena, Shahid overjoyed at fan response!
Kareena Kapoor is back in the USA after four years with her Rockstar tour, and she is excited that Shahid & she are performing on stage together for the first time on the same tour.
Her first show was held in Houston last week and the show organisers say that the enormous crowd went mad on seeing the two of them along with the likes of Salman Khan, Esha Deol, John Abraham, Zayed Khan and Mallika Sherawat.
It may be recalled that the recent HEAT show with Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Sushmita Sen, Celina Jaitly, Preity Zinta and Sushmita Sen, didn't generate much heat in the UK, but let's wait and find out the external perspective on Rockstar.
Meanwhile Shahid & Kareena are looking forward to the release of Chup Chup Ke on June 9.

Sushmita my favourite actress: Shiney
Newcomer Shiney Ahuja, who steals the show as a dreaded mobster in his latest release Gangster, cannot stop raving about Sushmita Sen.
"I am doing Tanuja Chandra's film Rocking with her. It is a love story between a cardiologist played by me and a singer played by Sushmita. The title Rocking doesn't only refer to music but also to the way she rocks my life," Shiney told IANS.
"She is enigmatic and magnetic. Among all my co-stars so far she is my absolute favourite."
Talking about Gangster, Shiney said: "You know, the whole film industry looks at Gangster as my first film. Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi didn't build any sort of a commercial equity for me. Though in many ways it changed my life.
"But I can't demand a certain price on the basis of Hazaaron Khwaishein... The awards have helped in increasing my fee." He reluctantly admits there wasn't much money in Gangster.
"But at the end of the day you have to do what you believe in. Working with Mahesh Bhatt saab was a genuine learning experience.
He is a pioneer in a certain kind of cinema. And the Bhatts (Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) have a high success ratio. They know the industry in and out. And they have taught me a lot.
I knew nothing about the industry when I arrived. I now consult Sudhir Mishra and Mahesh Bhatt. They are my godfathers." He gives a clean chit to his co-stars Kangana and Emran Hashmi in Gangster.
"Kangana is a sweet girl. And Emran is a really cool guy. There was absolutely no insecurity about him just because he belonged to the Bhatt clan. On the contrary, he has a reputation for good songs. So I thought I will have good songs too.
"I have two songs in Gangster though I don't sing them on screen. Singing wouldn't go with my character. Can you imagine a cold-blooded gangster bursting into a song?" So how does it feel sweeping most of the popular awards?
"Not most of them," he corrected."All of them. The awards were all surprises one after another, coming as they all did for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, which got a 35-print release. The awards went on and on until Filmfare which is the most prestigious of the lot."
After a character modelled on mobster Abu Salem in Gangster, Shiney plays Mahesh Bhatt in Woh Lamhe.
"Again my co-star is Kangana. It is the love story between Bhatt saab and Parveen Babi."
Next, Shiney has his mentor Sudhir Mishra's Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan. "I am waiting to start that. And Anurag Basu's Metro." He feels more relaxed now than he did when he made his debut.
"I haven't changed. But my environment has changed. I am no longer tense. My mentor Sudhir Mishra says my graph is going the opposite way. With success I have become easier to deal with." He laughs about the divorce story.
"I found it funny. It was initially embarrassing for my wife. Even she laughed about it later. But I don't react at all to such talk. I wonder who has the time to spread all these rumours. I can't understand the intentions of such people. I have to realise that such gossip will be a part and parcel of my life."

'Kareena is wonderful to work with'
Of late, Neha Dhupia seems to be doing a lot of comedies. After Kya Kool Hain Hum and Garam Masala, her next, Chup Chup Ke, starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, is also aimed at making the audience laugh.
Priyanka Jain asked the pretty actress about her funny bone. Some excerpts:
What is your role in Chup Chup Ke?
The tagline is 'Love meets confusion meets love.' I am the confusion in the film. Kareena's character cannot speak in the film and Shahid's chooses not to! And I am this crazy cousin of hers called Meenakshi who is an interpreter between the two. I create all the madness and get to say all the crazy lines in the film. I am one of the comedy factors.
It's a very deglamourised role. What made you accept it?
I had raised the glamour quotient a lot in my earlier films with the characters I played. To meet that quotient every time is difficult. Apart from that, I have enjoyed doing comedy earlier and I think it gives more room to exercise my acting talent. Comedy is really tough. It's all about timing. One needs to work hard to get that right. If it works well on screen it does wonders. So far as the audiences enjoy watching me in a funny avatar I don't mind doing it.
Are you going to be doing a lot more comedy?
If I get good comic scripts and opportunities to showcase my talent then I will continue to do so. In the earlier movies I have enjoyed playing comedy roles. However cliched it may sound, I don't want to be typecast as a glam girl or a comedy heroine. I want to experiment with different kind of roles.
Tell us about your experience working with Priyadarshan.
After Garam Masala, this is the second time I am working with Priyadarshan in a comic role. When he told me he wanted to do a second film with me, I was flattered to be considered again. It's been great working with him. He understands and believes in me.
What was your relationship with Kareena on the sets?
Kareena is a wonderful person to work with. We had a great bonding on and off the sets. While we were not shooting she would constantly talk, as her role required her to be silent. It was fun to have Sushma Reddy as well. We have become good buddies.
And what about Shahid?
He is a perfect gentleman on and off the sets. On the sets, Shahid was always busy preparing for his role or he would joke with all of us.
It was great working with both young and old actors who understand cinema. It's hilarious to watch Pareshji (Rawal) and Rajpal (Yadav) perform. They are so bang-on with the comedy bit. I learnt a great deal from them.
After working with Sunny Deol in Teesri Manzil you are working with his brother in your next film?
Yes. I am paired opposite Abhay Deol for my next film 1.40 Ki Last Local. It is a comedy flick directed by debutant director Sanjay Khanduri. The Deol brothers have become very good friends now. It was wonderful working with Sunny in Teesri.. and it was equally great working with his brother. While Sunny is more of the serious kind, Abhay is easy to get along with.
What else are you working on?
I will be shooting for Sivaji Productions' Delhi Heights opposite Jimmy Shergill, directed by Anand Kumar. The film is about three couples who live in an apartment [building] called Delhi Heights. Jimmy and I work in rival companies and have a lot of differences. The film is about how we fall in love despite working for rival companies, work out our differences and our future.

I'm very fond of Kareena Kapoor: Akshaye Khanna
Abbas-Mustan gave him the chance to play the darkest shade of black in Humraaz. Now Akshaye Khanna turns spotless white in the directorial duo's 36 China Town.
The actor laughs pleasurably. "I enjoyed both the good and bad equally. I don't take any role I won't enjoy playing. For me, playing grey or noble are equally relevant. And why should grey be more challenging? Other actors may think so.
But that's because most actors play grey once or maybe twice in their careers. And if you play something so drastically different it will appear to be more fun. But it isn't more challenging.
What I particulary liked about my villainous character in Humraaz was that he didn't reform at the end. I hate it when the antagonist suddenly gets a sympathy angle at the end. If I played a villain I wanted to go all the way. A bad person doesn't need a reason to be bad."
For Akshaye, playing a bad man again would require a role that's really out of the way. For now, he's a all good in 36 China Town.
Akshaye is the only non-humorous character in the film. "I make a grand appearance midway. I play a principled cop. The character held my attention. What I like about Abbas-Mustan's cinema is it's stylized. Whether it was Baazigar, Badshah or my own Humraaz, the characters are never routine.
Even when you're playing a villain like Shah Rukh in Baazigar or me in Humraaz there's an edge to the character. Similarly my cop in 36 Chiantown isn't a routine character. Abbas-Mustan could've easily put me in khaki and made me behave like a zillion cops in our films.
But Abbas-Mustan like to play around with conventions. They love to glamorize and stylize their settings without going over the top. To top it all, I've never played a cop before. I always wanted to."
"I don't know why they chose no 36. but it's the address where the murder takes place, That's about it. Let's not read too much into it."
He lights up at the mention of his co-star Kareena Kapoor. "Regrettably she didn't star opposite me. Fortunately people know she's opposite Shahid. Nowadays audiences get angry if they're misled in the promos. It doesn't matter whether it's for one shot or a whole film, it's always a pleasure to work with Kareena. I'm extremely fond of her.
I think we have a deep respect for each other as professionals. And we really enjoy each other's acting on the sets and on screen. We're very similar in certain ways. We're both very transparent, not capable of hypocrisy卼hough she's more outspoken than me.
At the moment we've no other films together匒s for Shahid, I've as many scenes with him as I've with Kareena since they're together all the time. He's a really sweet boy. Maybe because Bebo and I get along well, Shahid was very relaxed with me. In Bangkok we had a lovely time. Shahid is full of fun and energy卆nd very determined. He wants to look and give his best to every shot. "
Akshaye confesses he's comfortable with all his co-stars. "I love actors. It would take a really pathetic actor to put me off. I've had bad experiences. But very few. I hate actors who put on charade匒s for Upen Patel I don't have much scenes with him.
I can empathize with his turmoil as a debutante. He's extremely eager to learn. That's the biggest plus for any starter. Plus he's very amiable. You can sense his ambitio. He's chosen his debut cleverly. He suits the role."
Though an ensemble cast 36 China Town features Akshaye in a pivotal role. "My character is the glue that puts the pieces of the plot together."
As for his last release |

36 China Town breaks the jinx for Shahid-Kareena
This was bound to happen sooner than later! Thankfully in case of Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, this has happened sooner and just at the right time.
Good opening of '36 China Town' and continued patronage for the rest of the week has ensured that the film should turn out to be a reasonable success at the least. And none but Shahid and Kareena would be most pleased about that since there last film together, 'Fida', didn抰 exactly set the box office on fire. One of the major reasons for the film's downfall was said to be the film's plot itself that projected Kareena as a vamp who didn't really care about the character played by Shahid. The fans naturally felt cheated due to the absence of a romantic onscreen liaison between the two and soon the word spread around the town that Shahid and Kareena were not the typical 'hero' and 'heroine' in the film.
Now with '36 China Town', the duo got ample opportunity to play a 'conventional' hero and heroine in the film. So audience had their hands [and eyes full] when they saw the duo singing and dancing to peppy numbers, getting into sweet'n'little arguments, cracking jokes and genuinely enjoying themselves in the comic popcorn thriller!
With the movie's success, the most relieved man should be Boney Kapoor who may now be looking at releasing his long delayed 'Milenge Milenge' directed by Satish Kaushik. The film has been ready for quite some time but owing to the failure of 'Fida', Boney Kapoor went slow on 'Milenge Milenge' and instead concentrated on 'No Entry'. With 2005's biggest success behind him and '36 China Town' looking good, 'Milenge Milenge' is another film that should be yet another good reason for Shahid-Kareena fans to catch the flick.
Meanwhile one film starring the real life couple is fast gearing up for the release. In about a month's time from now comes Priyadarshan directed 'Chup Chup Ke' that is being promoted as a romantic comedy. Releasing on June 9, the film is also noticeable for the fact that Kareena plays a mute girl in the film while a situation provokes Shahid to act as a mute and a deaf guy. Supposed to be filmed in true Priyadarshan style, the film has now become further hot due to '36 China Town' clicking at the box office. Additional bonus comes in the form of Himesh Reshammiya's music that is eagerly awaited at the stands!

Akshaye, Shahid, Kareena, Upen sizzle 'Aashique'
Talking about Himesh Reshammiya, his 'Aashique' seems to be going a long way!
Though by no ways is '36 China Town' a love story, this brilliantly composed rhythmic love'n'dance track, 'Aashique Ye Meri', is turning out to be a real chartbuster before the film's release. If the original and remix version of this superhit number were not enough, there is yet another music video out that is set in the same mode as the one on the air. So what's special? This time the track also features Akshaye Khanna. In addition, there are Chinese dancers in the background who are traditionally attired and gyrate to authentic dance steps.
No wonder the song looks Exxxtra cool with the presence of cool as cucumber Akshaye. From Shahid, Kareena and Upen to an additional presence of Akshaye - it's indeed the case of 'teen se bhale chaar'!

Ghai, Abbas Mustan, Kareena, Priyanka together again
The 'Aitraaz' team of producers Subhash Ghai, director duo Abbas Mustan and female leads Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are together again! And they have repeated this feat in recently released '36 China Town'!
For those who watched the latest thriller from Abbas Mustan [with ample dose of comedy], they had a surprise in store as Priyanka Chopra appeared in a one scene appearance during the last 5 minutes of the film. Roped in to primarily add the glamour quotient, she is shown as investigating cop Akshaye Khanna's girlfriend who bumps across Casanova Upen Patel in a club.
Looking million bucks as always, this is the second time she has been seen in the fag end of a film after Milan Luthria's 'Taxi No. 9211' where she was shown to let her heart go to John Abraham.

Saif opts out of Qurbani remake
Saif Ali Khan has chosen to walk out of Feroz Khan抯 remake of the 1980抯 hit 'Qurbani'.
The original movie revolved around the life of two friends, played by Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna. Saif was to play the role of Vinod Khanna in the remake.
According to sources, Saif apparently opted out of the film because of some date problems. Saif has dates only after May 2007, while Feroz Khan has planned to start the film this year itself. Fardeen Khan will be seen playing the part of Feroz Khan in the remake.
Besides it seems like Khan Senior just can抰 resist the temptation of facing the camera. Apparently, Feroz Khan will also star in the Qurbani remake, but this time, he will play the role of a police inspector in the film, the role which was originally played by Amjad Khan.

Bachchan-SRK war, part II?
Ram Gopal Varma is caught in the cross-fire. Has Shah Rukh walked out of his Time Machine?
Apparently Shah Rukh Khan is miffed with director Ram Gopal Varma. The actor is said to be unhappy about the fact that instead of going ahead with the pre-production of Time Machine, Ramu has begun shooting for a quick film, Nishabd, with Amitabh Bachchan.
Incidentally, Ram Gopal Varma has been chasing Shah Rukh since the last five years. Ramu offered him several films, which Shah Rukh turned down. But finally, Shah Rukh decided to work with Ram Gopal Varma because he is open to experimental films since Paheli. Earlier Shah Rukh had stated that he didn't want to work with Ramu because the director makes 'dark films'.
According to sources close to Shah Rukh, 揝hah Rukh was surprised to read about Nishabd in the newspapers. He thought that Ramu was working on his film Time Machine, but when Shah Rukh realised that he's actually making another film with Amitabh Bachchan, he was taken aback. |

Movie profile: Urmila Matondkar
A bunch of bouquets
She抯 full of enthusiasm for her forthcoming film Benares. Her refrain throughout the interview is "it抯 a different film. You people always complain that we don抰 do anything new so this film is very new!!
Urmila claims that this role is one of the most difficult she抯 played; she moves from being a student of Physics [no less] to being a middle aged woman, it starts with a normal girl and goes on to a completely different level which is beyond the normal but the beauty of the character is sustained in that, she remains very human throughout this change. She is empathetic and vulnerable to human sorrows and yet goes way beyond that. But this character Shwetambari is even more difficult to essay when she grows old. 揟he spiritual angle comes in and that抯 like a Pandora's Box, you are sacred of venturing into it, you never know what to expect and are afraid that it may be more attractive than you envisaged |

Ash and Hrithik dance to Shiamak's tunes
Shiamak Davar has choreographed songs for films like TAAL, DIL TO PAGAL HAI, BUNTY AUR BABLI (Nach Baliye) etc. The National Award winner (for Dil To Pagal Hai) has Bollywood stars drooling over his dance style. In fact, it took veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan almost a year to convince Shiamak to choreograph the songs for DIL TO PAGAL HAI. And you know what, now we hear that Shiamak has been roped in to choreograph a song for DHOOM 2 that features Ash and Hrithik. Also he's put his point to the media that it's a little difficult to choreograph songs for sequels coz expectations tend to double then. And he only competes with himself and is very confident that things would turn out well with ace dancers like Ash and Hrithik, however the shooting would only commence in August.

Pooja plans film on her life
At a recent convention to mark the 49th anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous, Mahesh Bhatt felt that daughter Pooja Bhatt was ready to dabble in confessional cinema.
Says papa Bhatt, 揑 was invited for the convention as I could quit drinking 18 years ago, on my own.
While addressing the audience, Pooja spoke beautifully about what it meant to have an alcoholic father around. Without getting self-conscious even once, she easily pulled out grey images from her memory bank. I thought it was a creative achievement for her. |
