Bachelor of Education (Honours.) Teaching English as a Second Language (ED220)
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The B. Ed. Tesl (Hons) programme is specially tailored to produce knowledgable, skillful and qualified Bumiputera teachers, in an effort to upgrade the teaching and learning of English in secondary schools and institutions of higher learning.
To achieve this objective, the programme structure concentrates various on areas of education, knowledge competence in English language, methods of teaching and learning as well as teaching practice.
The length of the programme in the full time mode is 8 semester or 4 years. However, students with relevant Diplomas or equivalent can be given credits transfers, thus enabling them to graduate in less than 4 years.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the programme can serve as English instructors in government and private secondary schools or seek employment in the fields of journalism, publishing, broadcasting, advertising and training.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
STPM with 3 principal passes including Kertas Am or Pengajian Am and subsidiary pass in one other subject OR
Teacher's Training College diplomas / Certificates with 5 years experience in teaching English or 7 years teaching experience OR
Diploma from UiTM or other recognized institutions with a minimum C.G.P.A or 2.50 OR
Pre-Degree TESL certificate from UiTM OR
Ministry of Education matriculation certificate with a minimum C.G.P.A of 3.00 AND
MUET (minimum Band 4)AND
Pass the MEDSI (Malaysian Educators Selection Inventory) written test, physical test and interview conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education.
COURSE OFFERED
130 credits hours have to be completed for graduation which includes a 10 weeks teaching practicum and an academic project (mini-thesis).

In 1989, the Faculty started its undergraduate programme the Bachelor of Education in the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL). The programme is being run in collaboration with the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Memenuhi Syarat Am Universiti serta Keperluan Khas Program seperti berikut:
1. Sekurang-kurangnya kepujian mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM;
2. Lulus seekurang-kurangnya dengan Gred C (NGMP 2.00) mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat STPM;

Mendapatkan kepujian Bahasa Inggeris 1119
atau
Memperoleh sekurang-kurangnya band 4 dalam ujian Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

1. Kepujian mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM
2. Diploma dalam bidang yang sesuai atau kelayakan lain yang diiktiraf oleh Senat UPM
atau
Diploma/Sijil Perguruan Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia dan mempunyai pengalaman mengajar sekurang-kurangnya tiga (3) tahun.
3. Memperoleh sekurang-kurangnya band 4 dalam ujian Malaysian University English Test (MUET)
4. Keutamaan kepada calon yang mempunyai kursus khas satu (1) tahun dalam bidang TESL atau kursus pendek yang diiktiraf dalam bidang yang sama
dan
5. Perlu mengambil dan lulus ujian lisan dan bertulis. |

Programme Synopsis

The Bachelor of Education (TESOL) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme aimed at producing English teachers to teach English as a Second Language in Malaysian secondary schools. In this programme, the professional and pedagogical components are under the School of Educational Studies while the subject-matter component is under the School of Humanities. Foundation for Bachelor of Education (TESL)
The courses for the Foundation year of the Bachelor of Education (TESL) programme are comprehensive, intensive and pragmatic. The courses are designed to strengthen students’ grasp of the English language before proceeding to the degree programme.
Entry Requirement
Passed SPM/ SPMV/ O-levels or equivalent with five (5) credits including a good credit in English (SPM)
Additional Requirements:
A minimum of band 4 in the Malaysian University Test (MUET) or C6 in O-levels 1119 English will be an advantage.

Bachelor of Education (Honours) (TESL)
The Bachelor of Education (TESL) programme is comprehensive, intensive and pragmatic. The education courses are designed to incorporate elements of industry to expose teachers and trainers to the industrial environment. Besides, students could choose to sign up for English Literature courses, ESP/ Business English courses or courses offered by the IT and Industrial Management faculties as electives.
The main aim of this programme is to produce qualified, competent and proficient instructors or trainers, who use effective and innovative approaches and techniques as well as modern technology to conduct English Language courses. This programme, which culminates in the award of a professional honours degree recognised by the National Accreditation Board, Public Services Department and the Malaysia Ministry of Education, enables graduates to further their studies to postgraduate levels.
Entry Requirement
Passed the UNISEL Foundation Year for B. Ed TESL with CGPA 2.0 above;
OR
Passed STPM/ A-levels/ Matriculation or equivalent with two (2) principals/ CGPA of 2.0 above;
OR
Passed a recognised diploma with CGPA 2.0 above;OR Possess a Diploma in Education/ Certificate in Education.
