Reema prefers to keep mum

A section of media in Chennai went gaga over an alleged spat between Silambarasan and Reema Sen on the sets of Vallavan being enacted and directed by Silambarasan.

They reported that the two had developed arguments over a costume to be worn by Reema Sen for a particular song. Silambarasan has reportedly decided to replace Reema Sen.

Producer P L Thenappan was unavailable for comments.

Reema Sen, who is currently in Kolkata was contacted over the phone, she chose to remain quiet over the issue. Blaming the media for blowing the issue out of proportion, Reema Sen said, "I would be in Chennai on May 30 and would talk about the spat then."

Till then, it is silence.

Tusshar Kapoor

"I抳e been choosy after Khakee and Ghayab"

He抯 listening to scripts, which excite him more today. After Khakee and Ghayab his credibility as a versatile actor has gone up though he rues that filmmakers still see him as chocolate boy. The son of Jeetendra has always been seen as the surprise packet of Bollywood. After his unexpected role in Khakee and his expectedly fine comic performance in Kya kool hain hum Tushar Kapoor is choosing his roles with care. Excerpts from the conversation with this emerging star:

How do you view comedy roles?

Comedy is serious business. You can't do it lightly. You have to take it seriously. I enjoy doing comedy

Tell us about the experience with Golmaal.

Golmaal as the name suggests is a fun film directed by Rohit Shetty. It has Ajay, Arshad, Rimii Sen, and Paresh Rawal. It抯 a clean family film. Good boy bad boy falls into the campus films genre- a musical. It talks of how you don抰 need to be good or bad but smart. I play a mute character in Golmaal, so I worked on the sounds and presenting the character accordingly, that was fun doing

How is your experience with your co-star Emraan?   Working with him is very nice. He keeps to himself and that suits me too.

What are your preferences in choosing a film? For example Ghayab was so different.

I don抰 have preferences, when I did Ghayab I enjoyed that tremendously, it offered me something to chew on

Cannes loves Aishwarya but...

The only time Aishwarya Rai has had a film in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival was in 2002 when Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Devdas" was accorded a special red carpet screening.

Since then the doe-eyed Indian beauty has become bigger than the film and Bollywood itself.

Aishwarya isn't just India's most visible face on the Croisette, she is literally everywhere in the form of neon-lit portraits and hoardings - down the boulevard, in the movie halls, in the shopping areas and in every little pamphlet pertaining to the festival.

It is abundantly clear: Cannes loves Aishwarya Rai. But then it loves Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, Andie MacDowell, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh just as much.

All these beautiful ladies, representing the five continents, are brand ambassadresses of L'Oreal Paris, which has been the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival without a break for nearly a decade now.

L'Oreal sponsors the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival, which explains why Aishwarya never fails to put in an appearance when the whole wide world's entertainment press is at hand to record the red carpet walk for posterity. It has nothing whatever to do with Indian cinema.

Rani-Kajol, my lucky mascots!

Kajol and Rani Mukerji are Karan Johar's lucky mascots and must make an appearance in every film that he makes. It's no different in his latest "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna".

According to insiders, Kajol will appear in a song along with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan in the much anticipated film that stars Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani.

The special song is scheduled to be shot in July with the other three key players in the film.

Earlier, Rani and a pregnant Kajol appeared fleetingly in the very popular "Mahi Ve" song in Johar's love story "Kal Ho Naa Ho" with Shah Rukh, Saif Ali Khan and Preity.

Now Aishwarya for everyone!

Having been lauded loudly at Cannes for its volatile and relevant content, Provoked is now getting ready for a world-wide release.

For India, producer Dr J. Murli Manohar has separate plans. "Since the theme of domestic violence is as relevant in the West as in a remote village of Punjab or Bihar or Tamil Nadu we'd like Provoked to go into places that are ideally not seen as commercially viable for English language films. We therefore plan to dub Provoked into Tamil, Telugu and Hindi."

The three Indian versions of Provoked will have a background score completely separate and far more dramatic than the original English version.

Explains A R Rahman, "I don't think this has ever been done before. But when Jag (mohan) Mundhra and I got together for the background in Provoked we felt it was too underplayed for the Indian market.

Here we like the music to emphasize every scene. We spoke about it, and I got another background score ready for the Indian market. It's more in keeping with the mood required in our cinema."

The film is expected to be released in India in August.

Kajol is back from her 4-year sabbatical

She went into hibernation post marriage. But the allure of arc lights and showbiz was far more blinding to let her stay in her self-imposed four-year sabbatical for long.

And after having revelled in matrimonial bliss, she is all set to stage an emphatic comeback in Yash Chopra's next venture 'Fanaa', that that means destroyed in love, which will hit the silver screen tomorrow.

Kajol, who has given blockbusters like 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hain' and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' in the past, will be starting her second innings in the Kunal Kohli-directed film, which is a tale of love, trust, betrayal and pain and where she is playing a visually-impaired Kashmiri girl, Zooni Ali Beig.

Matching her step by step in the venture will be the perfectionist actor who is unique in his own individual way. He has already given one blockbuster this year, and if trade reports are to be believed he has delivered one of his finest performances in the Aditya Chopra-produced enterprise.

'Fanaa' stars Aamir Khan in the male lead opposite Kajol. Tabu, Rishi Kapoor and Kiron Kher have marginal roles in the film, while Lara Dutta and Abhishek Bachchan make cameo appearances. Others in the cast include Shiney Ahuja, Gautami Kapoor, Lilette Dubey and Vrajesh Hirjee.

Aamir has already tasted success at the turnstile this year with 'Rang De Basanti' having already been declared a hit. This is after so many years that two films of the midget Khan are seeing the light of the day in the same year.

This is also the first film to have Aamir and Kajol playing lovers. The two powerhouse talented actors previously acted in 'Ishq' but they were not pitted opposite each other in the film.

Fanaa sees Aamir Khan once again working with Yash Chopra after 13 years.

Aamir plays Rehan Qadri, a local guide who has a penchant for poetry. An exuberant man who uses his charm to get his way with girls.

Zooni is full of spirit. She wants to explore life for herself and is not going to let her handicap come in her way. She is leaving home on her own for the first time and wants to make the most of it.

This is where she meets Rehan, the man who will change her life and will himself be changed in the process. Rehan is absolutely besotted by Zooni. Once he gets close to her, he sees beyond her blindness and delves into her soul. He wants Zooni to feel the beauty of this world to the hilt.

But there are other sides of Rehan which Zooni is unaware of.

He knows letting the secret out will take Zooni away from him. But he also fears that her being a part of his life can also destroy her.

Though Aamir has already tested his vocal cords in films earlier, it will be the first time Kajol will be lending her voice to a song in the film. Other songs have been rendered by Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Babul Supriyo and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

Shot extensively in Delhi, Poland and Kashmir, the film is one of the most eagerly awaited ventures of the year.

Fund my wedding: Preity Zinta

"Please find me a producer who makes a complete film in India. I'm shooting abroad all the time!"

Preity was recently in Bangkok shooting a shampoo ad. Before that she has just completed a world tour with one of her favourite co-stars Saif. She then rushed into Mumbai headed for Cannes with buddy Karan Johar.

"I was excited about Cannes because I was with one of my most entertaining friends who by the way knows French better than the French, so I didn't fear misinterpretation. I caught The Da Vinci Code there. But Karan and I were looking mainly at projecting our film Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (KANK)."

She seems seriously possessed by Karan's passion. "I saw bits of the film recently at Karan's urging. What a film Karan has made! KANK is unlike anything we've seen before and certainly unlike anything I've done.

Everyone is beyond outstanding. Mr Bachchan and Shah Rukh need no endorsement from poor me. Rani is a rock star.

But Abhishek is going to shock you. His expressions, his interpretation of his character have to be seen to be believed. I truly believe Abhishek is the star of tomorrow. Me?

I never like myself on screen. But I must say KANK has changed my look and my personality completely. I play this cold woman which wasn't easy for a warm person like me to do. I've just a few expressions to give away. And I think I've done them well," she ends with breathless modesty.

And now she'll be paired with Abhishek again in Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom. "Again to be shot abroad. Groan groan," she mock-protests.

"We start the film in August and wrap it up by October. I guess it'd be released early next year. So I've three releases KANK, Shirish Kunder's Jaan-e-Man and then Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom in the next six months.

Wow! And to think that I had only one release Salaam Namaste since Veer-Zara. That's because I completely withdrew, stopped signing films and began to look at my life in a different way after Tsunami. Not many people know this.

But I nearly lost my life in Tsunami. Some of my close friends lost their lives. For almost eight months I stopped working. Hence the long gap between Veer-Zara and Salaam Namaste匱sunami made me question my own life and priorities.

I decided , if I can't be happy now I can never be happy. Not that I was ever unhappy. But Tsunami made me value what I've. I wrote down all the things that I had in life to be grateful about. And it was quite a long list!

Today I've a rocking career , my mom is a rock star and my personal life couldn't get any better, touch wood. I can shop till I drop and I can visit any part of the world to work or to holiday. Earlier there would be a problem with Kareena or whoever. I find all that totally unnecesary now. Now I like all my co-stars."

She lights up at the thought of working with Bobby Deol and Abhishek Bachchan in Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom.

"That one is going to be an Aquarian special. All three of us are Aquarians. So it will be like three like-minded actors working together on a fun project. And what fun to work with two of my favourite co-stars.

Though Bobby and I have done only one film Soldier together we're truly fond of each other. He calls me Pritam Singh. As for Abhishek, he's one of the most cultured and funniest persons I've met. So yeah, we're going to have a ball."

Please let us romance: Kareena

Seldom has Kareena been so charged about any film. "I just have a gut feeling about Othello. It's going to take me to another level."

Kareena was planning to go to Cannes where the film's producers are showing a 6-7-minute show-reel on Othello. "I was definitely planning my trip to Cannes this Summer," promises Kareena enthusiastically.

"The producer Kumar Mangat has put up an entire Othello stall at Cannes. I think it'd have been be a great experience. But I'm in the middle of my world concerts. People are already so curious about this Indian version of Shakespeare that Vishal Bhardwaj has done.

I'm sure they want to know what I've done with Desdemona. It's about time I moved to another level in my career. I feel Othello will take me there."

Her voice rises in animated anticipation. "Believe me, playing Desdemona in Othello has been my most challenging experience as an actress. There're very few roles which have given me satisfaction桼efugee, Ashoka, Chameli, Yuva and now Othello. I myself can't believe what I've done here."

Another level of excitement? Her first film with Shah Rukh Khan since Ashoka where Kareena had dazzled as the exotic and enigmatic Mauryan princess.

"Yes, I'm going from Vishal Bharadwaj to Ram Gopal Varma 匢t's quite a journey, and one that I'm thoroughly looking forward to. You know, I've always been Shah Rukh's biggest fan.

Even before I came into the industry I used to find him smashing. I think our chemistry in Ashoka was unmatchable. Now I'm sure what Ramu will do with the two of us will be something else."

Right now she's excited about her new release 36 Chinatown. "It's a nice sensuous suspense film and my second with Abbas-Mustan. I've lots of very interesting scenes with Shahid and Akshaye Khanna. It's a full-on commercial film. But again I don't have any really romantic scenes with Shahid. I wish some producer would cast us in a truly romantic film."

I was a victim of violence too: Ash

Cannes is not a new platform for Aishwarya Rai. She had been a regular visitor at the film festival since 2002 when the big budget bollywood film Devdas was screened at the festival.

In 2003 Aishwarya was at the Cannes as a member of the jury. This year she is there to promote Provoked which was screened on Thursday and Friday, with another screening scheduled for Monday.

Directed by Jag Mundhra, Provoked is the true story of a 23 year old Punjabi woman named Kiranjit Ahluwalia, who having lost both her parents by the age of 16, was persuaded by her brothers to give up her law studies and marry London based Deepak Ahluwalia only to be the vitim of incessant domestic voilence.

When someone asked Ash if she had been through any such experience, the most beautiful woman in the world stunned everyone by saying, 'Yes'.

It is a well-known fact that Ash was dating bollywood bad boy Salman Khan a few years back. Salman and Ash shared a strange relationship, a love-hate relation that was the talk of the town. Sallu was known to be extremely possessive of his then lady love Ash.

Friends and relatives of Ash too revealed that many a times he would physically assault her. However one fine day when things went overboard and Ash could no longer deal with it anymore, she walked out on him.

However Ash since then has never spoken about the pain, guilt or anger of her past volatile relationship or the reasons for her sticking it out so long.

But at Cannes when somebody further enquired the details of the same and Ash apparently replied, "Wait for my biography."

Aishwarya Rai in Rush Hour 3?

This could be Aishwarya Rai's dazzling comeback to form. Her performance in Provoked, Jagmohan Mundra's elegiac look at domestic values, is one of the big talking points at Cannes already.

When congratulated for her performance Ash smiled, "The performance is straight from the heart. And you can see it. No artifice here at all. I feel completely for Kiranjit Ahluwalia and all other victims of domestic violence."

Provoked producer Dr J. Murli Manohar pulled off a cutting coup for his film when on Wednesday for the premiere of Provoked at Cannes he convinced the real Kiranjit Ahluwalia to share the stage with her stunning celluloid avatar.

Minutes before the screening on Wednesday night, Kiranjit Ahluwalia got cold feet and refused to go into the theatre in Cannes to re-live the trauma of her own life. It was Aishwarya Rai who plays Kiranjit in Provoked who convinced Kiranjit to watch the film.

Kiranjit wept throughout the film. Many scenes showing domestic violence were too close to home for her comfort and Kiranjit had to shut her eyes to keep away the memories. She was specially moved by the scenes showing Kiranjit's anguish in prison at being separated from her children.

"The younger son was exactly the way my own younger one looked when I was in prison." Kiranjit sobbed.

Speaking from Cannes the producer Mrs Sunanda Murli said, "Kiranjit was very reluctant to make any public appearance. But we convinced her of how imperative it was for her to be here to share this moment with Aishwarya. The film is Kiranjit's story and we finally convinced her to come. It's a historic moment."

Adds Aishwarya, "I never met Kiranjit before accepting the film. I didn't want to get influenced in my performance. But the film is finally a triumphant fable of her struggle and victory against oppession."

While at Cannes Ash is also expected to be finalized for the lead in the third part of Brett Ratner's Jackie Chan action-comedy Rush Hour.

Not only that. Ash is the face and Brand Ambassador for L'Oreal who are the sponsors of the Festival.

Provoked was premiered at Cannes tonight with a press conference on May 19. The producers of the Rai-starrer Last Legion Tarak Ben Ammar & Dino DeLaurentiis will hold a private party for Ash.

She will also complete her remaining dubbing for Last Legion in Nice, France during her brief stay and will try to get a sneak preview of the film.

For the opening ceremony Ash wore a tightly fitted black Armani couture gown. The following evening she wore a deep-blue couture gown by Roberto Cavalli. Both evenings she dazzled in jewels by De Grisogno of Geneva.

It's Unreal: Kareena Kapoor

Having lost oodles of weight before her departure Kareena is really and truly rocking in the US where the Rock Stars concerts are being held.

"The concerts are going unbelievably well," she screams in delight from Washington minutes after Shahid and Kareena get a thundering applause.

"We've just finished our performance. And the ovation is unreal. For Shahid it's the first time. He has never done live concerts before. And he's having a ball like me."

Kareena says the Rock Stars concerts are the best live shows of her career. "Every performance of mine from Yuva to Chameli to Fida has the audiences on its feet.

Kareena returns on 14 June to join the unit of Farhan Akhtar's Don in Malaysia. "It's just a special appearnce in Don. But my song Yeh mera dil pyar ka deewana rocks. I know there will be comparison with the original (Helen in Chandra Barot's Don ). But all comparisons will be forgotten once people see what I've done."

Back to the concerts. "Shahid and I have an act together. I also have a dance number with Salman Khan. We've just finished Washington. We're going to Boston on 14 th. Next week we perform at Chicago, New York and then Toronto.

Everywhere we go the screams of the audiences follow us. I tell you it's unreal. To watch them go insane after our performances gives me a high that I can't put into words."

She agrees she has an abbreviated role in her new release 36 Chinatown. "But the movie has done well. Shahid and I have been accepted as a pair. We'll now be seen in Priyan's Chup Chup Ke. I really don't think life can get any better卭r may it can."

Why Esha Deol chose to expose?

Esha Deol's Ankahee released but during a special screening of the film that was held at Filmcity, mama Hema cried profusely after she took a sneak peek at her daughter's work.

"The film is very intense and nice. Hema ji was so touched. 'It抯 very different from what Esha has done till now', she told us," says an eye-witness.

Produced by Pritish Nandy Communications and directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film is a love triangle where Esha plays Kavya, a Miss World and the seductress, who falls in love with the doctor.

The fact that the doctor happens to be married with a daughter does not deter the powerful and successful, yet lonely, Kavya who believes that only he can make her happy.

Now we all know Esha is no Mallika, Priyanka, Kareena or even Bipasha. She does not have the assets, nor does she have the Oomph. Yet, in a contradiction that is so typical of Bollywood she seems to excel only in roles where she is cast as a sex siren.

Does that bother Hema and Deols in general?

"I know, Esha is playing a very complex character. It抯 very tough to play, but she did it wonderfully. She displayed a lot of maturity while enacting the role. I must say Vikram Bhatt has done a very good job and brought out the best in Esha," gushes Hema.

In the past Esha has been extremely reluctant about the exposure and taken contradictory stands.

At one point she said, "An actress is all about acting, revealing is not even in the job!

'Kareena and I didn't run away'

Did Subhash Ghai actually scream at Shahid and Kareena at the 36 China Town Party?

"I'd rather not give this importance," Shahid is too polite to not answer. "I drove down all the way from Nainital where I was shooting for Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah. I drove for ten hours to Delhi and caught a flight to Mumbai only for Subhashji's function.

It makes no sense for me to run away without giving any interviews. Why would I come back all the way to Mumbai, tired out of my wits and run back before doing what I had come to do梩alk to the media?

It was a miscommunication. We left when dinner was served because I had a very early morning flight for Sooraj-ji's shooting. Mr Ghai's people rang up and said the media was waiting.

We immediately turned the car around and returned to the venue, came back gave our interviews. That's it. There was no fireworks, no need for screaming headlines."

He's all smiles. So what if his last film Shikhar didn't do well. Shahid Kapoor's performance came in for a lot of praise. "I'd rather not say anything about the film when it didn't do well. But yes, it could've been marketed better. But never mind. Let's look ahead."

He has two releases coming up in quick succession桝bbas-Mustan's 36 China Town and Priyadarshan 's Chup Chup Ke. Both co-starring Shahid'd real love Kareena Kapoor.

But Shahid shrugs away the question of over-kill. "The two films look very different from one another.. I've always said, if a product is good it'll do well. My first film Ishq Vishq wasn't so much hyped. It still did very well, whereas my second film Fida which was far better publicised didn't work.

The size of the product makes no difference. The content does. I'm very happy with both 36 China Town and Chup Chupe Ke. Only on Friday will we know the real outcome."

He effortlessly slips into talking about his pairing with Kareena. "It's true we haven't really had a successful film together. But at the end of the day, it's the product and not the stars who get rejected. People couldn't digest the negative ending. They wanted to see me and Bebo doing happy endings.

In 36 China Town and Chupke Chupke there are lots of sweet romantic films, though neither is an out-and-out love story.

China Town has a love story. But it's a murder mystery. The driving force of Priyan's film is comedy. We must do a full-on love story together, if not for the audiences' sake then our own sake."

Shahid had great fun with both directors, both first-timers. "Bebo has done a number of films with Abbas-Mustan and Priyan. Abbas-Mustan are so well-prepared. If you've one question for them they've five answers ready. That makes life so much easier for an actor.

Even though they're a duo, they're totally in-sync with one another. They're so simple and humble. And yet they make such stylish films! Honestly as a newcomer it's a pleasure working with experienced directors with Sooraj Barjatya and Abbas-Mustan. They've worked with so many different kinds of actors. I feel I'm in school when I work with them."

Shaid says he has a very cute role in 36 China Town. "I play this struggling actor who leaves home to come to Mumbai. Once he gets here he finds it hard to get even a b-grade role. Scary thought, ha ha."

Shahid doesn't have too many scenes with Akshaye Khanna. "But whatever work I had with him was enjoyable. He's an actor who likes to give other actors their space. I like that. Like Akshaye I like to stay in my own thoughts and space when I'm working. Of course I've fun on the sets too. You've to find a common ground between work and leisure when you're on the sets."

As for Priyadarshan, Shahid says, "I'm the kind of guy who'd always adjust to my directors. Every director has his own requirements. I like to go on the sets with an open mind. Otherwise there's some sort of a fiction.

Fortunately I'm working with directors I can trust completely. Priyanji does a very peculiar and particular kind of comedy. I remember after my first shot for Chup Chupke.I was sweating."

Shahid says he hasn't done too much comedy. "I've tried that genre only in Ananth Mahadevan's Dil Maange More. In Deewane Huey Paagal was a comedy. But I had no comic scenes in it. I was the serious and boring one. Now I get to do comedy not only in Chup Chup Ke but even in 36 China Town I've quite a bit of comedy."

Shahid is confident about both films. "I'm hopeful about both, not over-confident."

Right now he's back to shooting for Barjatya's Vivah. "We've finished about eighty percent film. It's very much a Sooraj Barjataya film. It has just two characters principally, me and Amrita Rao. We haven't been paired together since our first film Ishq Vishq.

Vivah is an extremely sensitive film. We've seen hundreds of love stories. But none so far about arranged marriages. Vivah shows what happens after two people have decided to get married."

He seems to be upbeat about the number of assignments. "I'm blessed to have so many different kinds of directors. But now I need to get even more choosy. I can't get away with one hit and three flops卬ot in this day and age.

Today an actor has to take responsibility for every success or flop

Ameesha: Tears for real!

Everyone抯 been raving about Ameesha抯 performance in Ankahee, and while speaking to her she gave us some interesting behind-the-scenes goss about film. 揟he most difficult and one of the best scenes of the film were shot on the first day of the shoot. It was the scene where I go to Esha抯 house pleading her to salvage my marriage. The scene was okayed in just one take, I didn抰 use glycerin for the shot, and when I finished everyone was just stunned. Vikram forgot to say 慶ut

Aamir and Kajol抯 passing chances in love! Oops!

Movie: Fanaa
Cast: Aamir Khan, Kajol, Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher
Direction: Kunal Kohli
Rating: * * 1/2

That Yashraj machine is at it again. But expand your horizons tonight. The Chopras are not all about squishy teens and regressive oldies out to recount hopeless memories.

The fixation is off and the feistiness is showing. It shows in the shrewd, calculated humour of Aamir Khan (so what if he抯 too dapper to be a terrorist). And the cultured resonance of Kajol. And the 憄assing chance in love

SRK抯 quick Malaysian holiday!

Being an actor is no mean task. And being a superstar is a humungous responsibility. For starters, dodging the flashbulbs, staying for long periods away from loved ones, and always being politically correct卆re just few things that stars have to comply with. Of course, no one handles stardom better than our Badshaah Khan. He has all friends and almost no foes in the media, and he always says and does things that seem right. But being the Bollywood Badshaah doesn抰 help one thing - the distance from his family. Yeah, when SRK抯 on long outdoor shoots he misses his family terribly; he抯 been in Malaysia for a long shooting spell for 慏on

Akshaye抯 changing colours!

He抯 an actor who loves to experiment. So what if his films are far and few, at least, every film is different from the other. Every Akshaye is different from the other. In fact, these days, he抯 even been exploring different looks for his roles. If in Shaadi Se Pehle we saw him wearing the 60抯 kinda hair- do, in 36 China Town he抯 sporting a smart and modish man-in-uniform.
