It will be a night of passion, spectacle and quality football when the UEFA Champions League returns to the Mestalla with a Group D fixture between Valencia CF and AS Roma.

Goalscoring form
The last time the two sides met here in this competition it was humbling for Valencia as Roma, who only retain Francesco Totti from that stunning night in February 2003, won 3-0. As for Matchday 1 this season, both teams hit four goals to register opening victories - Valencia at Olympiacos CFP and Roma at home against FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Valencia coach Quique S醤chez Flores thinks another win will leave either side all but through.

Winner takes all
The Spaniard, who played for Valencia against Roma in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup and is making his UEFA Champions League home debut as a coach, said: "I've been poring over the statistics and it's clear that a large number of teams qualify in second place with nine, eight and even seven points. So it's obvious that with six points by the end of Matchday 2 there is a massive percentage chance of making the knockout round."

Study
S醤chez Flores's study has not been purely theoretical. Valencia beat Roma 2-0 in a summer Mestalla friendly and he has been meticulous in tracking their development since. "We've seen many Roma performances on tape and although a friendly is totally different from the Champions League there are points for us to keep in mind," said the coach. "You have to work hard against Roma, you have to keep up incessant pressure on them and you have to play smart."

Team news
Valencia must do without the suspended Joaqu韓 S醤chez while David Navarro may replace Ra鷏 Albiol from the team that drew 1-1 at FC Barcelona on Sunday. Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is missing the injured Taddei and could be shorn of Philippe Mexes too. A decision will be taken on the Frenchman on Wednesday afternoon.

'Tough choices'
"I still have tough choices among the fit players," said Spalletti, who refused to confirm whether Totti and Vincenzo Montella would be reunited after linking superbly for the first time this season in Sunday's 4-0 win at Parma FC. "Totti and Montella do play well together and I'm not concerned about their fitness. All Totti needs to do is keep on playing and training in order to regain his edge and his fitness."

Fortress Mestalla
Roma defender Christian Panucci, who won the Spanish title with Real Madrid CF, knows playing at the Mestalla is no easy task. "I know from personal experience that you need real personality as a team to win here," he said. "Not many sides take three points from the Mestalla and you have to find a way to prevent the volcanic support here connecting with the team. It's an old-fashioned atmosphere, the fans are right on top of you, but I'm 100 per cent sure that this Roma team has enough personality to get the scoreline we want."
