Germany to present Euro '08 roster atop tallest peak

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Germany coach Joachim Loew has pickedthe country's tallest peak to announce his squad for the EuropeanChampionship.

The 23-man roster will be named May 16 at the Panorama Lounge atop the2,962-meter (9,718-foot) Zugspitze. The mountain is near the borderwith Austria and within sight - on clear days - of peaks inSwitzerland, the two countries that are co-costing the Junechampionship."Welooked for an attractive location that links Germany geographically andsymbolically with the two hosts," national team general manager OliverBierhoff said Tuesday.

Bierhoff said Constance Lake, which is atthe three-country border, was also considered, "but the two countriesare usually linked to mountains," making the Zugspitze the "logicalchoice," Bierhoff said.

Germany's players are already informally referring to the championship as "mountain tour 2008," he said.

bayern nye first tim power gila tapi 2nd tim hancus, kalu injed sorang first tim menggelabah la jadiknya, plak tu midfil banyak bergantung kat injury prone ribery tu, kalu dia takde hancus ah midfil, plak tu defence tajde improve dari musim lepas lagi, kahn plak dah tua tapi tamak taknak kongsi ngan rensing

haku ada 3 orang idola kat bayern skarang, kalu lahm ngan podolski blah, tinggal la sorang, kahn dah tak idola dah pasal dia tamak

1. lahm -> tak konsisten musim ni, kontrak pun tak sambung lagik, kerap jadik subs utk marcell jansen dan ganti sagnol yang manyak injed, masadepan kat bayern kabur, tak tahu dia stay bayern ke idak, manu ngan barca berminat nak "amik"

2. podolski -> hanya sumbat beberapa gol saja sejak masuk bayern, bremen antara kelab yang berminat nak "amik" dia tapi bayern tak moh jual, sejak toni dan klose masuk bayern dia lagik kurang dpt start, mungkin klinsmann leh menyerlahkan bakat dia kot nanti, bagi haku baik dia belah ke bremen je lagi bagus

3. ribery -> playmaker utama bayern skarang ni dan bila dia takde nampak sgt bayern struggle, masalahnya dia ni injury prone, bayern kena carik back-up utk dia la, sweinsy bgan altintop agak menghampakan musim ni

Bundesliga - Ribery sends Bayern through  Eurosport -  Wed, 27 Feb 22:45:00 2008

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich needed a Franck Riberypenalty in the last minute of extra time to see off second-divisioncity rivals TSV 1860 Munich 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

The French international had to take the kick twice after histeam mates encroached the first time but coolly chipped the ball in atthe second attempt.
The referee awarded the spot kick after Chhunly Pagenburg brought down German international striker Miroslav Kloseon the very edge of the box with a penalty shootout looming. Replaysappeared to suggest contact was made just outside the area.
"Ithink from the number of chances we had you can't really dispute thatwe deserved the win," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said.
Bayern ended the match with 10 men after their Italian international striker Luca Toni was sent off in the 84th minute and 1860 had two players sent off in extra time.
Bayern, missing injured Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, started with Ribery and Klose on the bench and chances were scant in the first half.
Midfielder Toni Kroosintercepted the ball and went clear in the 36th minute but fired hisshot over the bar with Toni in a good position to his right.
Bayern thought they had a penalty in the last minute of regular time when Benjamin Schwarz appeared to drag Lucio down but the referee ignored their furious appeals.
Earlier, Marcelinho scored in extra time to give VfL Wolfsburg a 2-1 win over Hamburg SV in the day's other quarter-final.
TheBrazilian looked sluggish for most of the match but found an extraburst of pace in the 109th minute to power into the Hamburg area andlift the ball over advancing goalkeeper Frank Rost.
Wolfsburg had taken the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart then levelled spectacularly in the 70th minute, lashing a long-range shot into the top corner after Mohamed Zidan's layoff.
Wolfsburg, ninth in the Bundesliga, have never won the German Cup but reached thefinal in 1995, losing to Borussia Moenchengladbach.
InTuesday's quarter-finals, second-division strugglers Carl Zeiss Jenabeat Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart on penalties and BorussiaDortmund eased past second-division 1899 Hoffenheim 3-1.
The draw for the March 18/19 semi-finals will take place on Sunday and the final is on April 19 in Berlin.

Hoeness rules out summer spree

Wed 27 Feb, 11:15 AM

Uli Hoeness has revealed there will not be a repeat of their recent spending spree when Jurgen Klinsmann takes the Bayern Munich reins. The Bavarians have spent around 80 million euros on new players this campaign with the likes of Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribery all joining the club.

The upcoming change of coach, with Klinsmann taking over from Ottmar Hitzfeld, had led to speculation there could be another significant raid on the transfer market over the summer.

But Hoeness believes there is no need to add any new names to the Bayern squad.

"We will not buy just for buying's sake," he told Sport Bild magazine.

"We will only buy if we need to, and I can only see a limited necessity at the moment.

"Furthermore, after speaking with Jurgen Klinsmann, I don't have the feeling that he has any major demands when it comes to signing new players."

Instead, Germany international Tim Borowski will join on a free transfer from Werder Bremen, while Andreas Gorlitz will return from a loan spell at Karlsruhe - although Hoeness hinted there is money available should they need to strengthen.

"We cannot make such a big investment every year, even if we did also earn 35 million euros," added Hoeness.

"But anybody who thinks that Bayern has run out of money after such big investments is talking nonsense."

Schalke – Bayern Munich

The big match of the weekend taks place at the Veltins Arena in what could be a make or break game for Schalke trainer Mirko Slomka.  If media reports are to be believed, Slomka has two matches to save his job starting with Bayern on Saturday and continuing against Porto next week in the Champions League.

The K鰊igsblauen have lost their way of late with two successive league defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg which has led to a section of the home fans calling for Mirko Slomka to be replaced and the board handing him the two-game ultimatum.

Leaders Bayern Munich will be looking to take advantage of Schalke’s woes and extend their lead at the top of the table, which currently stands at four points over Werder Bremen.  The Bavarians were held to a 1-1 draw in the home game this season, so will want to go one better at the Veltins Arena.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side too are in the middle of a crunch period.  They faced title rivals Hamburg last weekend and drew, and clashed with city rivals 1860 in the Cup on Wednesday needing a penalty at the end of extra-time to win.  Next week they face Belgian side Anderlecht in the Uega Cup with a spot in the quarter finals up for grabs.

Werder Bremen – Borussia Dortmund

Werder allowed Bayern to extend their lead at the top to four points last weekend when they slipped to defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, so could really do with three points on Saturday to ensure the gap isn’t any wider come the end of round 21.

Having said that beating visitors Borussia Dortmund will be no easy task, although Thomas Schaaf’s side are at home.  They will have to do with talisman Diego though following his reckless red card last weekend.

Werder will also be looking for revenge over BVB, who beat them 3-0 in the league earlier this season and then knocked them out of the German Cup at the end of January.

Dortmund will arrive full of confidence after booking their place in the semi-finals of the Cup in midweek with a comfortable win over Hoffenheim.  Two consecutive league wins over Rostock and Cottbus indicates that Thomas Doll’s side may just be entering a purple patch of form.  They will be hopig to continue that run at the Weser Stadion.
