RI initiates forum of 4 countries to support Palestine

New York (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will for the first time hold a meeting of four foreign ministers to form a forum in support of efforts to end the Palestine-Israel protracted conflict and to establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
The forum will be made up of foreign ministers from India, Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia known as leading developing countries, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told ANTARA at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
The meeting will take place in New York on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 65th UN General Assembly which will bring together 100 heads of state/government.
"There will be for the first time a forum involving influential (developing) countries, namely India, South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia. The forum will specifically discuss the issue of Palestine," Marty said.
"Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will listen to a statement by Palestinian foreign minister about what the Palestinians need to support their effort to conduct direct negotiations (with Israel)," he said.
The initiative to form the forum was another form of Indonesia`s efforts to support Palestine`s struggle for an independent and sovereign state, he said.
So far Indonesia had extended its support to the Palestinian people through bilateral ties, the Asia-Africa forum and the United Nations, he said.
The initiative was also a response to the expectation made by Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas at a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta some time ago, he said.
Early this month Israel and Palestine resumed peace talks which had come to a standstill since 2008. The United States which initiated the resumption of the peace talks expected the two conflicting parties to reach a peace agreement in one year.
Since late 2008, Palestine and Israel have held indirect talks seven times but none of them yielded an agreement.
Palestine and Israel held the second round of direct negotiations in Egypt recently under the auspices of the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the US special envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell. (*)
