kesian eh, nak wedding dinner kena blackout lak...
habis semua planning.

Bride takes 40 mins to reach ground floor

WEDDING HORROR: BLACKOUT AT PAN PACIFIC HOTEL

By Michael Lee

FOR better or for worse.

Little did the young couple who were about to have their wedding dinner at Pan Pacific hotel know this would soon be put to the test.

They were the unfortunate victims of a most untimely power failure that plunged the the hotel in Raffles Boulevard into pitch darkness from 5.15pm to about 9pm on Friday.

The bride, 20 storeys up, had to walk down the stairs as the lifts were not working.

'It was very difficult for me to walk down 20 storeys with my gown and my long train dragging behind!' said Ms Tracy Yong, 22.

Hotel staff and her helpers were on hand to guide her on her arduous descent.

'We took almost 40 minutes to reach the ground floor!' she said.

Ms Yong and the bridegroom Mr Gan Choon Wee, 24, then had to proceed on foot to the Conrad International Centennial hotel ballroom.

Pan Pacific had made arrangements with the hotel, which is two minutes walk away, to hold the dinner there.

The wedding nightmare began at 5.15pm.

The wedding couple were getting ready in their bridal suite on the 20th storey.

Mr Gan and Ms Yong, both navy officers, were brimming with excitement. The Ocean Ballroom on Level 2 was all set to receive their 300 guests later in the evening.

Then there was darkness.

A tense 40 minutes followed. What to do? Where to go?

The hotel's marketing director Kenneth Law said the hotel decided to inform its clients about 40 minutes into the blackout they would have to relocate their wedding venue.

The first choice had to be the nearest hotel. Conrad hotel, two minutes walk away at Temasek Boulevard, was an option.

THANK OUR LUCKY STARS

'It was an unfortunate incident, but we also have to thank our lucky stars Conrad's ballroom was not taken up!' said Mr Law.

He said another corporate event had to move to The Oriental hotel, which also had a vacant spot.

The bride and groom, on the other hand, were cursing their bad luck.

'Of course we were both upset,' said Mr Gan.

He added that their parents were even angrier, but they did not kick up a ruckus with the hotel staff.

'There was no time to waste. Our main concern was to move elsewhere and settle costs later,' said Mr Gan.

Pan Pacific also confirmed that any cost adjustment would be made later.

Luckily, the stranded couple had their relatives, friends and even the hotel to help make phone calls to inform the guests of the last-minute change in venue.

The wedding reception was supposed to start at 7pm with a cocktail.

Mr Gan looked at his watch. It was already almost 7pm.

Meanwhile, the two hotels were working like busy bees to pull off the door-to-door relocation.

'From the food to our servers, we moved everything, lock, stock and barrel next-door,' said Mr Law.

The hotel staff cut through the food court at Millenia Walk in a rush to deliver the food and the hall decorations to the Conrad hotel.

On their side, Conrad hotel might have had a vacant ballroom, but it was short on manpower.

'We redeployed staff from other sections to help set up the room,' said Mr Cheong Hai Poh, 38, the food and beverage manager at Conrad Hotel.

'Some chefs had even gone home but they all came back to help out. We may be competitors but in times like these, camaraderie kicks in.'

The sight of all these people working together allayed Mr Gan and Ms Yong's fears their big day would turn into a fiasco.

'I must thank both Pan Pacific and Conrad for what they've done in spite of the chaotic turn of events,' said Mr Gan's brother, Choon Kiat.

'I was, however, not very happy with the shuttle service Pan Pacific provided to those guests who showed up there.'

He said the hotel ferried those guests over to Conrad much later than the promised 7.30pm.

The couple also felt Pan Pacific should have alerted them about the change much earlier.

'They took too long to get the hall ready. Our guests could only take their seats at 8.30pm,' said Ms Yong, who was, however, happy with how the original decorations and floral arrangements were reproduced to a tee.

MANY GUESTS DIDN'T TURN UP

He felt 'a lot' of guests did not show up because of the change of venue.

A man then came round to tell them they were behind schedule and had to get ready for their second march-in.

'Stick to the plan,' they were told.

The young couple excused themselves and, amid a sea of applause, walked into a hall that was certainly not in the original plan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They still don't know why it happened

THE Pan Pacific has not called the family to inform them why the blackout occurred on Friday night, says Mr Gan Choon Kiat, the groom's brother.

However, he told The New Paper last night that it wasn't important for them to get to the bottom of the matter now that his brother's wedding was over.

Their priority on that day was the welfare of the guests.

Said Mr Gan: 'We don't know the reason behind the power failure, but the hotel has told us that they will compensate us for the inconvenience caused.'

He declined to disclose the amount which they will be given.

The hotel's management was not available last night for a comment on the cause of the blackout.

errk ni dah check
from ROMM's website :

Two witnesses are needed for your solemnization. The details of the witnesses, that is their name as in their NRIC and their NRIC number, are needed at the point of registration. They do not need to be present for your registration. However, their presence are needed on the day of solemnization.

Maknanya kena bawak IC saksi larr time register...tapi saksi tak yah datang..baru gue paham..errk peraturan baru ke?

If there are changes to your witnesses' details or there is a change of witness, you will need to inform the Registry personally at least 7 days before your marriage. If you have made an on-line application, you may change your witnesses' details here.

dulu,i know somebody, dia ni dah mid 40's.dia very particular sangat about things, asik nak complain2 aja.ini tak boleh, itu tak boleh....kadang2 pain in the butt jugak.small small things put dia get work up.
have she ever wonder...why she's  not married yet ???

people are so scared of characters like this, asik nak find fault with others.
sometimes the fault lies with them ... but they are too buzy finding people's fault...that they cannot see theirs.
