Han Ye-seul Wins Over Detractors as Amnesiac Heiress
The character played by Han Ye-sul (24) in the MBC drama "Couple of Fantasy" is a kind of Korean Paris Hilton, and her catchphrase "Look at you..." is on everybody's lips. An audacious heiress, Ana Jo becomes a comic character with disordered hair and cheap clothes after losing her memory due to an accident. Han's popularity is soaring thanks to the attractive qualities she brings to the role of a haughty rich girl brought low.
"Aren't they cute? I mean Netizens. They say I was such an unattractive character but suddenly became so charming. Those anti-fans... They suddenly became big fans," Han laughs. Her clothes are unflattering, but they can't hide her beautiful chiseled face. "I am a completely different person from Ana Jo. In fact, I think I'm lovely, delicate and rarely get angry." Han says she never expected she would become this popular. "When I decided to play a character like Ana Jo, who is arrogant and haughty, I was ready for any criticism from viewers, but instead I'm getting very friendly responses and I was really surprised," she says. "When I see how popular characters like Ana Jo are, I realize that Korea is changing fast. The public is becoming more open-minded. It's cool. Such a mindset is important for us to develop, isn't it?" She has a tendency to answer a question with another question.
Han made her debut in entertainment when she won a super model contest. She became a star thanks to the rude and bizarre role she played in another MBC drama, "Non Stop," in 2004. Recently she spent a year off with her family in the U.S. "The reason why I had so many detractors was that I became a star so fast. Our citizens have a strong sense of justice." Isn't she afraid of spoiling her image by playing such a role? She is breaking down barriers step by step as Ana Jo. "I've been a star rather than an actress, and that's no good. Stars have an inflated image and a short lifespan. I want to be more passionate about my job and build my career so that I can act for a long time."
Complimented that her acting has greatly improved, she giggles and covers her mouth. "Really? It's so nice to hear that. I think I'm very lucky." She speaks English fluently and wants to enter the U.S. market too. Asked if she wants to follow in the footsteps of Kim Yun-jin, who is a star thanks to her part in the ABC hit series "Lost," she is quick to respond. "It's so childish to say I want to do better than someone else." Does she have a role model? "There are so many excellent actors and actresses out there... My job is acting, but I don't like watching dramas or movies, so I can't answer your question. It's ironic, isn't it?"

The reason Korean dramas are loved in China
The 3rd annual Global Culture Industry Forum began on the 26th in Seoul with culture industry leaders from 9 countries including the U.S., Germany, and Japan amongst others participating. The forum that lasts for two days, 8 hours each, will host various seminars and discussions.
Notable is the active participation of the Chinese specialists. China, though behind Japan in the economic effects of the Korean Wave, has a vast influence over Southeast Asia and is a place where Korean popular culture has been able to deeply penetrate into.
Zhang Ming Zhi, the head director of China's Television Production Committee, will hold a seminar on the topic 'The Exchange and Joint Production of Korean and Chinese Television' on the 27th.
He wrote in a pre-distributed statement that Korean dramas ranging from 'What is Love,' which started the Korean drama wave in China, to trendy dramas such as 'Winter Sonata,' 'Autumn Fairy Tale,' home drama 'Men of the Bath House,' life dramas 'Look and Look Again' and 'Miss Mermaid,' and historical drama 'Dae Jang Geum' all have the center theme-the love and respect of family members, compassion between couples, and everlasting love between a man and woman and others-based on Confucianism which as a result make it very similar to the ethical ideas of Chinese viewers.
He draws the main reason behind the success of Korean dramas in the Chinese market on the truthful depiction of a common life and refreshing stories. Also, love scenes are expressed in a suggestive way so that all Asian cultures can relate to without having to directly visualize the emotions on screen.
Also notable is the idea that female writers play a large part in the popularity. He writes that Korean dramas are mostly written by females who play a major role in the success. The characteristics of female writers are that they have a way of bringing out the romance with detailed emotions and depict Confucianism thoughts well. Chinese writers, who are mostly male, write based on historical facts or current social problems and hold importance in the political ideals and social effects which is different from the approach of Korean writers.
In Zhang Ming Zhi's report of the size of the Chinese broadcasting market, there were 314 broadcasters, 2,289 channels, and 1.2 billion viewers in 2005 and 70% of television advertising revenue was from dramas. Also, amongst the 2,000 or so drama production companies, 500 titles of 12,447 episodes were produced with investment funds adding up to 4 billion yuan.
He claimed that Korea and China have many similarities in cultural thought and as both cultures are a major element in Asian culture itself, both must proceed forward based on trust, exchange, and cooperation.
Wang Guo Hua, the president of Hong Kong's daily paper 'Ta Kung Pao,' selected Confucius as the culture China must set forth. In his pre-distributed material he wrote that Confucius and Confucianism is a gold mine of culture which can serve as a 'New Business Cluster' of an environment friendly high return business.
President Wang also mentioned that, "Korea and Japan that have increased their cultural influence along with economic development and can serve as a role model for Asian countries. After the financial crisis, Korea focused on the culture industry as the strategic industry of the 21st century and as a result Korea's game industry has become an international brand. This is the proof that Asia's culture industry has great potential."

'Cruel Winter Blues,' a poignant story of a gangster and his enemy's mother
By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Yonhap) -- On a dry winter's day, gangster Jae-mun travels to a remote town to revenge his murdered friend and ends up meeting his enemy's mother instead.
Despite its plot of taking on the underworld, "Cruel Winter Blues" turns into a poignant family drama by portraying the emotional exchanges between the two strangers.
"Shooting this film, I hoped that people will feel like calling their mother after watching it. And I think our movie turned out that way," director Lee Jeong-beom said of his debut feature after a press screening in Seoul on Monday.
"Cruel Winter Blues" uses simple cinematography to convey the characters' changing emotions. The story centers on Jae-mun (played by Seol Kyung-goo), who goes to his enemy's hometown looking for blood. In the arid seaside town of Beolgyo on South Korea's southwestern coast, he learns that what assuages his anger is not an act of revenge but human affection from Jeom-sim (played by Lah Mun-hee), his adversary's mother.
The film borrows some basic rules of a gangster movie, such as the main character's tragic end caused by his trusted follower (played by Cho Han-sun), rather than by his enemy, their inability to end the cycle of murder and the ubiquitous rain falling in the climax.
"We gave the film no cinematic effects, no polishing process. We made it in a raw and crude way -- just with sincerity. We wanted to shoot a story of real love, not a fake one," the director said.
Seol, after proving his myriad talents in "Peppermint Candy," "Oasis" and "Public Enemy," again presents a heart-wrenching performance with the emotionally devastated Jae-mun. A veteran television actress, Lah serves as the epitome of motherhood, while Cho Han-sun plays a soft-hearted rookie gangster that alludes to Jae-mun's past.
"Telling the story -- someone, such an ordinary person who can be found anywhere next to you, comes to commit a big crime --, our movie did not exaggerate. But it did its best and found the way to tell the story as it is," Lah said.
The movie, produced with 3.8 billion won (US$4 million) by Sidus FNH, is to be released nationwide on Nov. 9.

Ads Pit Jeon Ji-hyun Against Lee Hyo-lee
Jeon Ji-hyun(left) and Lee Hyo-lee
Top Korean stars Jeon Ji-hyun and Lee Hyo-lee are pitted against each other in single combat in the new commercials for the Samsung Anycall mobile phones.
Each, as it happens, seems to have occupied the other's domain. Jeon was given the bad-girl role, a style expected to take off with the release of "The Devil Wears Prada" based on the fashion-industry roman a clef. Never one to be out of step with the fads, the star who has so far relied on angelic innocence, looks determined to acquire some teeth.
Jeon sheds an image appealing to men's protective instinct and instead turns heads by using her curves. In a survey coinciding with the release of the movie, which asked what cover models respondents would choose if they were the ice-queen editrix played by Meryl Streep, Jeon Ji-hyun came ahead of Lee Hyo-lee with 39 percent. Among male stars, Rain ranked first.
Lee Hyo-lee, a synonym for sexy confidence, has transformed herself into a gentle, mature woman for the spot. She has become the type of person well described by the new expression "good face, good body, good personality." Lee is seen as a good Samaritan after it was revealed that she assisted a drunk who had fallen on the street: not just a pretty face, but a good heart too. Who would have thought it?

Prince charming
By JERMYN CHOW
He is a heartthrob who sets hearts aflutter in Asia and has nabbed numerous lucrative endorsement deals. But for now, all Kim Jeong Hoon can think of is sleep.
Despite all the perks that come with fame, the poor chap has hardly had any shuteye for the past month, averaging no more than three hours a night.
And the weariness is apparent when the Korean star ambles into a room overlooking the skyline of Kangnam, Seoul, almost an hour after the appointed time.
Kim Jeong Hoon's star is set to
soar further with the release of
his first solo album, Five Stella
Nights.
"Chesonghamnida," says the lanky actor as he bows slightly, acknowledging his own tardiness. Chesonghamnida is Korean for "sorry".
You give the 26-year-old the once-over, trying to find some semblance of South Korea's 10th most beautiful man (according to a recent online poll by youths done in the country) in the person before you.
What you see is no dashing hunk but a young man of delicate frame who looks knackered and who covers half his pale, but otherwise flawless, face with a baseball cap.
Even as you try to establish eye contact, his eyes say something else: exhaustion.
Our translator explains that the actor had been held up at the hospital where he was seeking a panacea for insomnia, which has plagued him for the past week.
"I don't know why I just cannot sleep. Maybe I'm used to not sleeping much when filming Princess Hours," he explains.
Indeed, while filming the hit drama early last year, he was clocking 15 hours a day, seven days a week.
Even now, there is no respite, as he goes into overdrive in the recording studios to prepare for the launch of his new Japanese album soon.
To top it all, he has to cope with his university studies.
Such is the current lifestyle of Kim, who shot to regional fame after starring in the comic book-based romantic drama Princess Hours.
In South Korea, the show was a bona fide hit, achieving ratings of more than 30% viewership. A show is considered a mega-hit once it hits 25% viewership, such as dramas Jewel in the Palace and My Lovely Sam Soon.
How popular is he now? A couple of trips to Taipei in the last few months also saw "tens of thousands of girls" following him everywhere he went, say Taiwanese newspapers.
Though Kim relishes being associated with the popular show, he makes it clear that he is not as magnanimous as his on-screen persona
Though Kirn relishes being associated with the popular show, he makes it clear that he is not as magnanimous as his on-screen persona Lee Yul, a prince who wants to succeed the throne in a fantasy constitutional monarchy Korea.
The actor confesses to being prone to "mood swings" and says he is "not as kind-hearted and soft as Yul".
But he does share something in common with the ambitious prince in that he "wants to do well and always seeks new opportunities", he adds.
For sure, he has impressive academic credentials.
The book-smart chap topped an examination in 1999 and was admitted to the nation抯 top institution, Seoul National University, to study dentistry.
Some fan sites even peg his IQ score at 146, just four points shy of scientist Albert Einstein抯. And guess what, Lee抯 pet subjects are physics and mathematics.
Unfortunately, juggling acting and singing in the now defunct boyband UN (United N-Generation) had taken a toll on his studies.
He dropped out of Seoul National University to pursue acting and Japanese in Chung-Ang University, where he is now in his final year.
"It wasn't a difficult decision as dentistry turned out to be quite different from what I had expected," he chuckles, flashing that trademark impish grin that has captivated women fans.
"I was getting bored of it."
Having proved his acting chops in Princess Hours, he now wants to showcase his singing prowess.
His star is set to rise further with the release of his solo album, Five Stella Nights, in Japan soon, which he is releasing under the moniker John Hoon.
Not surprisingly, he will be singing |

Actress Tries Comeback Five Years After Drug Bust
Actress Hwang Soo-jung (34), who withdrew from public life after charges of illegal drug use in 2001, recently kicked up a fresh controversy on the Internet after it emerged that she was a part of a music video. Five years after the incident, Hwang was selected to star in the video for the sixth album of singer WAX. After her arrest in 2001 Hwang stopped all acting, but recently she has tried, until now to no avail, to get her career rolling again.
"Are we supposed to indulge her just because a few years have passed and she is a star?" one irate Netizen demanded. "I'm against her comeback." But others thought she has paid her debt to society.
On portal Media Daum, one visitor was unforgiving. "Not being able to be on TV or in the movies for five years is all she gets? Let her just think about what she did for the rest of her life." Another user said her appearance "shows evidence that our society is getting apathetic to immorality and guilt, and is a clear demonstration that order and moral standards are crumbling in our society."
"If the broadcasting and movie industry open the doors to those who caused trouble, even to the point of drug use, to help them get back to work, it's the same as granting them a carte blanche," a stern moralist said on portal site Naver. "If they do, there will be more followers who give themselves up to the kind of wrongdoings and expect to get around the punishment." But another user warned of such lack of charity. "Over the past five years, she must have gone through hard times, |

Korean High-Schooler to Grace Giant Tokyo Posters
The Korean actress Ara is set to become a star in Japan, with the Sankei Sports daily already running a full feature on her advertising venture in the land of the rising sun. "Korea's new star Ara will be covering Tokyo in the form of 53 large billboards," the daily said. According to the paper, starting from Wednesday, 53 of the 4 m by 3 m signboards will be put up in some 30 locations in the downtown area. Making use of teaser advertising, the signboards show her picture and homepage address, evoking curiosity about who she is. Through the end of this year, two more new PR signboards will follow.
The method is similar to the one used for BoA, who has now grown into a megastar in Japan. Like BoA, Ara is attached to SM Entertainment, which successfully paved BoA's way to Japan with a shrewd image management.
Ara will not make her debut in Japan until next March. She won the role of Kulan, the lover of Genghis Khan, in a co-production between Mongolia and Japan titled "The Blue Wolf - To the Ends of the Earth and Sea." In the competition, the odds were as steep as 1:40,000. "I've been dreaming of my picture hanging in Tokyo like other Korean Wave stars," Ara told the paper. "I'm really happy my dream came true this early." She is described as "Korea's new queen of commercials." Although only in her first year of high school, she started her career as a model at the age of 13 and appeared in a TV drama last year.

Who is This Girl?
16-year old Korean actress Ara is a familiar face in her own country but an unknown in Japan. That is about to change as the Avex music label has arranged for her to appear on 53 billboards throughout Tokyo from tomorrow. The posters include only her photo, a URL and a vague line of catch copy, as Avex hope to stir up interest in this mysterious young beauty. The movie "Welcome to Dongmakgol" by director Park Kwang-hyun has entered the top-10 of the box-office chart in Japan in the first week since its opening there.

Singer Rain Poses for Unfortunate Children
Pan-Asian star Rain has participated in the photo exhibition "Letter from Angels 4" organized by photographer Cho Se-hon to help children without families. In cooperation with the Social Welfare Society (SWS), the exhibition has been held since 2003 to help children living in social facilities find a new home and lead a healthy life.
Rain accepted a direct request for participation by Cho without hesitation despite his busy schedule, saying "I will be happy if I can help even one child find a new loving family." He posed with a one-month old baby boy, who perplexed the star near the end of the photographing by urinating on him.
The exhibition will be held at the Insa Art Center in Seoul from Dec. 20 until 26. Other participating stars include actresses Kim Jung-eun, who is a SWS promotion ambassador, Kim Hye-soo, Sohn Ye-jin and group SG Wannabe.

Back with new album, Se7en dreams big to take on U.S. stage
By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, Nov. 2 (Yonhap) -- With four albums under his belt and an increasing fan base across Asia, South Korea's R&B/hip hop singer Se7en sees a tough road ahead before reaching the U.S. market but says he has a dream to push him through.
Returning with his fourth album Se7olution, the 22-year-old didn't hide his ambitions to take on the huge pop market with a single album due in the United States next year.
"It won't be as easy as it sounds," Se7en said in a press conference at a Seoul hotel for his new album on Wednesday.
"But thinking of what I've come through -- when I was young, I dreamed of becoming a singer. When I became a singer, I wanted to be the top," he said. "Four years later, now I've come to this stage where I can reach the United States. You have a dream, practice hard for it, then you can get there some way," he said.
Se7en's new album released Tuesday mellowed a bit with romantic R&B songs, rather than his trademark hip hop style, like the song "La La La" which features his voice rather than his dance performance. His future single in the U.S., he said, will return to hip hop, a popular trend for dance club music.
To catch the trend, his management YG Family said it is working with famed U.S. producers like Richard Harrison, whose credits include Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" and Usher's "Confessions" albums, and Mark Shimmel, who discovered Usher and Tony Braxton.
The U.S. market, however, has barely welcomed Asian singers. Japan's pop diva and song writer Hiraku Utada had a lukewarm response to her 2004 U.S. debut album. South Korean singer Bi (Rain) drew mixed responses when he held a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City in February.
Despite the shadows, the articulate singer remains positive about his dream. Besides preparing for local drama sequel "The Palace 2" where he plays a lead role, he is honing his English, a key factor in building his name in the U.S. He has proven his fluency in Japanese at concerts.
"When you go to Rome you follow Roman rules. In Asia, many people liked my Korean songs, but that won't be the case with the U.S. It is home to R&B and hip hop music," he said, "Some will ignore me and others will take an interest in me. And I'm thinking of the second case and of people who will like my songs and my dancing. I started it to break the bias that Asians can't do hip hop."

Chun Ji-hyun to Debut in Hollywood
Actress Chun Ji-hyun will debut in the U.S. movie market in the role of a half-human/half-vampire warrior named Saya.
Chun's agency said the actress will star in the movie tentatively titled "Blood The Last Vampire" that is being produced by a major Hollywood production company.
Chun, who has gained popularity in Asia for her roles in the movies "Windstruck" and "My Sassy Girl," drew the spotlight for her plans to debut in Hollywood.
"Blood The Last Vampire" is based on the same-titled anime film by Japanese animation master Oshii Mamoru. French investment and distribution firm Pathe has invested in the movie, while Hong Kong producer Bill Kong and Abel Namias will produce the movie. The film will be directed by Woo In-tae, while Corey Yuen will be in charge of the action scenes.
A person from Chun's agency said the movie will likely be produced by a major Hollywood studio and open in the United States in 2008. The Japanese side only holds the copyright for the movie, while Pathe will be in charge of investment and distribution. He also added that the movie will be filmed only in English and that Chun, too, will say her lines in English.
The production costs of the movie will be determined by who will play opposite Chun. It is yet unknown when filming will begin, as the actor who will play opposite Chun has yet to be cast.
The original role of Saya in the animation film will be cinematized in the Hollywood version.
Chun, who is currently taking English-language courses in the United States, will return to Korea for a short period of time next month.

Copyright for Remake of "The Host" Sold to Universal
"The Host," which made Korean film history this summer with the record-setting number of viewers of some 13 million, is likely to be remade in the U.S.
U.S. film magazines such as Screen International and Variety reported Friday that Universal managed to win a fierce competition for the copyright to the movie's remake rights at the American Film Market being held in Santa Monica.
Cine Click Asia, the company in charge of the movie's overseas sales, said that Gold Circle Film president Paul Brooks and Vertigo Entertainment co-presidents Roy Lee and Doug Davison will work as producers, and Universal executive Norm Waitt will be in charge of production, with two other Universal executives, Peter Kramer and David Ortiz, supervising. Gold Film Circle had attempted a remake of "My Sassy Girl" and Vertigo Entertainment had attempted remakes of "My Wife is a Gangster," "Old Boy" and "Ring."
There has been much interest in the copyright to remake the Korean movie, with many companies such as 20th Century Fox and Plan B competing for it.
Screen International said that "The Host" produced by Chungeoram was chose for the Directors Fortnight at the Cannes International Film Festival this year and broke all box office records in Korea.
Overseas, the movie is scheduled to be released in Britain on Nov. 10, in France on Nov. 22 and in the U.S. next February.
