Bundesliga - Sagnol: Bayern still a long way behind  Eurosport -  Tue, 04 Mar 14:29:00 2008

Bayern Munich full-back Willy Sagnol believes the German giants still have a long way to go before they can challenge for the Champions League.

Bayern lead the Bundesliga by four points and are in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal and last 16 of the UEFA Cup.
CoachOttmar Hitzfeld predicts his team are ready to challenge in theChampions League but Sagnol disagrees, citing a lack of experiencedplayers as their hindrance.
"(Franck) Ribery,(Luco) Toni and (Jose Ernesto) Sosa - none of them have ever played inthe Champions League yet and experience is very important there,"Sagnol said in Kicker magazine.
"We are still a long way behind Milan."
ACMilan were the last side Bayern faced in Europe's elite competitionalmost 12 months ago when a 2-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena sent themout of the competition after drawing 2-2 at the San Siro.
IfBayern are to win the next duel with the Italian giants, or any otherbig name in European football, Sagnol believes further reinforcement isrequired before Jurgen Klinsmann takes over in the summer.
"Maybe we need one or two established players, then we could compete with the best," added the 30-year-old
"We lack a battler. If we only play beautifully, then we will have no success."
Bayernlast won the Champions League with Stefan Effenberg as their captainbut since he left the club in 2002, they have not quite been able tofind a similar leader on the field, although Mark van Bommel is doing his best to emulate the German.
It may be Sagnol himself who leads the players on the field as he will inherit the captain's armband when Oliver Kahn retires in the summer.
Sagnol, who requested a transfer in November, now feels happy to still be at the club after fighting his way back into the team.
He said: "I still have two more years on my contract with Bayern and I will end my career here.
"I can imagine playing for another three or four years and I still feel too young to be talking about retirement."

Bayern Munich take giant step towards UEFA Cup quarter-finals
Hamburg - German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich on Thursday took a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup with an emphatic 5-0 victory against a ten-man Anderlecht in a first leg round of 16 match. Bayern's goals against the Belgian team were scored by Hamit Altintop (9), Luca Toni (45), Lukas Podolski (57), Miroslav Klose (66) and Franck Ribery (85).

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld started the game in Belgium without regular goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who was given permission to stay in Munich and Germany international Klose and Ribery, who were on the bench.

Hitzfeld was not disappointed with the team that he picked though as they dominated throughout the game.

Altintop gave the visitors the ideal start as Toni laid off to Altintop in the ninth minute and the Turkish international unleashed a powerful shot from well outside the area that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Anderlecht nearly equalized matters midway through the first half as Jan Polak hit the upright with a free-kick.

The home side was reduced to ten men in the 42nd minute after Marcin Wasilewski was shown his second yellow card and sent for an early shower.

It took Bayern just two minutes to make their numerical advantage count as Luca Toni scored with a volley after a Philipp Lahm cross. The Italian striker received his third booking of the competition though and will miss next week's return leg.

Bayern added another goal in the 57th minute after a counter- attack started by Franck Ribery. After running half the size of the pitch the French international played the ball to his left, where Podolski had a simple task scoring from close range.

Klose, who came on for Toni at half-time, scored Bayern's fourth after Podolski managed to pull back a cross from an acute angle.

To add to Anderlecht's misery, Ribery's delicate free-kick five minutes from the end into the top right corner gave Bayern their emphatic victory.

Bundesliga - Round-up: Bayern extend their lead  Eurosport -  Sat, 08 Mar 17:15:00 2008

Bayern Munich surged seven points clear in the Bundesliga after Luca Toni and Franck Ribery secured a 2-0 home win over Karlsruhe while Werder Bremen were thumped 6-3 at VfB Stuttgart.

Karlsruhe held firm at the Allianz Arena until Toni squeezedin a shot four minutes before halftime. Ribery made the game safe witha virtuoso goal in the second half.

Mario Gomez netted a hat-trick as champions Stuttgart recorded a memorable victory at home to Werder who had briefly led through Hugo Almeida but ended up well beaten and a man short, Per Mertesacker being sent off in the closing stages.
After 23 matches Bayern lead on 50 points followed by Werder on 43.

Hamburg SV, third on 41, will move up to second and cut Bayern's lead to six points if they win at Nuremberg on Sunday.
Bayer Leverkusen, fourth on 38, are also in action on Sunday at home to Hanover 96.

Bayernhad less than 48 hours to recover from their 5-0 win at Anderlecht inthe UEFA Cup on Thursday and unsurprisingly took time to get goingagainst Karlsruhe.

Ribery forced a sharp save with a low freekick from the edge of the area in the 34th minute but there was littleelse from Bayern before Toni grabbed his 14th league goal of the season.

There seemed little danger when Christian Lellfloated the ball in to Toni, who had his back to goal at the near post.As the defence waited, the Italian spun round and beat the keeper witha precise shot.

Bayern's one moment of real quality finished Karlsruhe off.

Inthe 64th minute Ribery drifted in from the left, tricked his way intothe penalty area and shot through the final defender's legs.
Werderseemed set to make up for their UEFA Cup defeat by Rangers when theytook the lead against Stuttgart with a ninth-minute header from Almeida.

Stuttgarthit back to take a 2-1 lead with two goals from Gomez before Werderequalised after an hour thanks to a deflected shot from Sebastian Boenisch.

Thehome team's response was devastating. Gomez tapped in a Cacau cross tocomplete his hat-trick in the 65th minute and seconds later Gomezturned provider for Cacau to lash home.

Markus Rosenberg reduced Werder's arrears before Mertesacker put through his own net with six minutes to go to give Stuttgart breathing space.

There was still time for Cacau to score his second and for Mertesacker to see red for bringing down Gomez.

Schalke 04, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals in midweek, put a run of three Bundesliga defeats behind them by beating Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 with a header from Gustavo Varela and a second-half strike from Halil Altintop.

Ramos checks out Schalke ace    Last Updated: Sun, 09 Mar 2008 10:39
Tottenham are checking out FC Schalke's Manuel Neuer as Juande Ramos targets a new goalkeeper this summer.

Ramoshas made it clear he wants to sign a new goalkeeper and his number twoGus Poyet has already confirmed that Espanyol's Carlos Kameni is aplayer they are watching.

Reports in Spain have claimed thattalks may already have started with Kameni but now speculation alsosuggests that Neuer could be an option for the Spurs boss.

Neuerpulled off an amazing display in midweek when saving two penalties asSchalke progressed through to the quarter-finals of the ChampionsLeague against Porto and Spurs have immediately been linked.

Allthe speculation that Spurs are in the hunt for a new goalkeeper doesnot bode well for Paul Robinson who could be pushed out of White HartLane in the summer.

Bundesliga - Stuttgart resigned to losing Gomez

Eurosport - Mon, 10 Mar 15:06:00 2008

Stuttgart have admitted that the excellent form of striker Mario Gomez means he is unlikely to see out the remaining four years of his contract.
FOOTBALL: Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez - 0

Gomez, the Bundesliga champions' player of the year last season, took his tally for the current campaign to 14 league goals after scoring a hat-trick in Saturday's 6-3 win over Werder Bremen.

"It's unrealistic to think that Mario will stay to the end of his contract in 2012," Stuttgart sporting director Horst Heldt was quoted as saying in the German media.

"We're not so naive as to think he's going to play his whole career in Stuttgart, although obviously we want to keep him for as long as possible."

Kicker magazine reported on Monday that Milan, Fiorentina and Juventus were all interested in signing Gomez.

The 22-year-old striker is certain to be named in the Germany squad for Euro 2008. He has scored four goals in just eight internationals so far.
