China Open - Beijing

copied & paste from WTA Tour official site

Sharapova Through to Semis; Venus Out

BEIJING, China - World No.1 Maria Sharapova cruised through her quarterfinal on Friday while reigning Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was forced to withdraw prior to hers, as the semifinals were set at the $585,000 China Open in Beijing, a Tier II event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Sharapova, the top seed in Beijing, struggled early against unseeded Shinobu Asagoe but pounced at the Japanese player's first sign of weakness and took complete control, posting a 64 61 win. The two traded breaks early and were on serve through the ninth game of the match, but Asagoe faltered while serving at 4-5, double-faulting on set point to hand Sharapova the first set. The Russian teenager stormed through the first five games of the second set, dropping the sixth game before closing out the victory in just over an hour.

"I played well today," said Sharapova, who has now won four of five career encounters with Asagoe. "I started off strong but then I made a few mistakes and she capitalized. She's a good player and has a strong return. I just tried to play my game and in the end I got the win."

Sharapova has now reached at least the semifinals at 10 of 13 events contested this year, and is just the third player this season to win at least 50 matches on the Tour, trailing Kim Clijsters' 56 and tying Lindsay Davenport. She also reached the semis last year at the inaugural China Open but fell to eventual runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets.

Williams, the No.3 seed, was not so lucky on Friday, being forced to withdraw from prior to her quarterfinal match against Polish teenager Marta Domachowska due to left knee pain. The 25-year-old American called for the trainer during her second round victory over Nuria Llagostera Vives on Thursday but continued playing.

"I just couldn't play today's match," said Williams, who was making her debut in Beijing. "I'm not fit enough to play professional tennis and so I shouldn't be out there. It's really disappointing because I was having such a great time at this tournament. I've really enjoyed playing here and I hope that I can come back next year and pick up where I left off."

Also advancing to the final four were No.9 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who defeated Chinese teenager Peng Shuai, and unseeded Maria Kirilenko, who ousted Chinese wild card Sun Tiantian.

Groenefeld, one of the Tour's biggest servers, posted a 75 61 victory over Peng in the day's first match. The 20-year-old German has reached three Tour semifinals previously, but just once at a Tier II event or higher, that coming at Stanford in July. Kirilenko defeated Sun 61 63 to reach her first Tier II semifinal. The 18-year-old Russian has reached two semis before, both at the Tier IV event in Hyderabad, India. Sun was responsible for ousting seven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in second-round action on Wednesday.

In Saturday's semifinals, Sharapova will take on Kirilenko while Groenefeld will face Domachowska. Sharapova is 1-0 against Kirilenko, prevailing 76(7) 62 over her countrywoman recently at Los Angeles. Groenefeld and Domachowska will square off for the first time.

"I don't think I have more of an advantage now that there are only two seeds remaining," said Sharapova, whose only remaining seeded competition at this event is Groenefeld. "Whoever I'm playing against, if it's in the quarterfinal or semifinal, has obviously played well enough to get there and deserves to be there."

The doubles semifinals will also take place on Saturday, with the possibility of an all-Chinese final as Yan Zi and Zheng Jie face No.2 seeds Corina Morariu and Flavia Pennetta and No.3 seeds Li Ting and Sun Tiantian take on Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Vento-Kabchi. The teams in the latter match-up advanced on Friday, with Li and Sun defeating Vera Douchevina and Natalie Grandin 16 76(5) 62 and Llagostera Vives and Vento-Kabchi ousting Liu Wan-Ting and Sun Shengnan 67(5) 62 76(4). The other semifinal pairs advanced on Thursday, with Yan and Zheng defeating Liga Dekmeijere and Martina Muller 75 62 and Morariu and Pennetta beating Li Na and Peng Shuai 64 63.

Injured Sharapova quits during Beijing semifinal

By STEPHANIE HOO, Associated Press Writer
September 24, 2005

BEIJING (AP) -- Maria Sharapova quit because of a chest injury while trailing in the China Open semifinals Saturday, sending Russia's Maria Kirilenko into the title match against Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Kirilenko, ranked 45th, was ahead 6-4, 2-1 and ``very surprised'' when Sharapova stopped. The decision by the top-ranked Russian prompted boos from the crowd at a tournament beset by injuries.

Sharapova said a muscle on the right side of her chest is inflamed, causing recurring pain. The problem began in Zurich, Switzerland, last October, and she said a switch to heavier balls in that tournament may have been a factor.

The pain ``comes on unexpectedly from day to day,'' she said. ``It's very mysterious.''

Sharapova said her father, also her coach, decided to end the match Saturday.

``I'm very disappointed, obviously,'' she said. ``With every shot, with every forehand and serve I hit, it got worse and worse.''

Groenefeld defeated Poland's Marta Domachowska 7-5, 6-3 in the other semifinal. The big-serving Groenefeld, ranked 30th, won the double's championship in Bali last week. Groenefeld and Kirilenko and will be going for a first WTA singles title.

Sharapova's pullout followed injuries to Serena and Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.

Davenport withdrew before the tournament because of a lower back strain. Venus Williams pulled out before her quarterfinal because of a leg injury. Defending champion Serena Williams lost in the second round to China's Sun Tiantian and attributed her poor play to an ailing leg.
