Andrei Arshavin unable to inspire Arsenal to win on debut
Arsenal (0) 0 Sunderland (0) 0
The replica shirts were out in force, the sense of anticipation intense. After his interminably protracted transfer, Andrei Arshavin responded with a debut of immense promise on Saturday but that was only positive the Arsenal faithful could take from yet another stalemate that only served to fuel growing concern around the Emirates.
Statistics can prove misleading but Arsenal have now failed to score in three straight league games for the first time in a decade. Their football is still highly watchable but gone, for the moment at least, is the controlled creativity and fluent finishing that for years under Arsene Wenger has carved opponents open.
At least Arshavin , given a terrific welcome, gave fans a glimpse of his undoubted talents. He began his Arsenal career on the right side of midfield and the game was five minutes old when he got his first sniff of a goal, storming forward to rifle a shot just wide.
That was with his right foot and he came even closer with his left, cutting in and bringing a flying save out of Marton Fulop, preferred to the out-of-favour Craig Gordon. In between, Robin van Persie almost finished off a classic Arsenal move, only to lift his delicate chip wide after latching on to a defense-splitting pass from Denilson.
That was Arsenal at their best but only too rarely did they reach those heights again. When they did threaten, man of the match Fulop was brave and bold, aided by poor Arsenal finishing and a defense that protected him heroically.
Sunderland have a dismal record against the Gunners, with just two wins in the last 26 visits. But like so many visitors to the Emirates, they strung five across midfield and used the ball effectively on the counter.
When Arshavin occasionally drifted to the left, he looked equally comfortable but it was back on the right where he tricked his way past a bemused Teemu Tainio and always tried to pass intelligently before starting to tire.
When Kolo Toure's header was blocked on the line by a mixture of Andy Reid and the back of William Gallas in the dying moments of the first half, you sensed Arsenal would have no luck. Yet just had they done in recent outings, the FA cup win over Cardiff notwithstanding, they charmed and frustrated in equal measure, enjoying heaps of possession but rushing far too many efforts, substitute Carlos Vela a notable culprit.
As the game remained deadlocked, a balding, bespectacled fan bedecked in a red and white scarf jumped out of his seat just in front of the press box and punched the air in annoyance. You suspected he was not alone in the cavernous surroundings. Arshavin, having played no competitive football since the end of the Russian season, was spared the final 24 minutes and Sunderland closed ranks, much to the delight of the travelling Wearside fans for whom a moral victory was accomplished.
"They never came out in the second half and we tried to force things a bit too much," said Wenger who is still missing a string of vitally important players but nevertheless appears to be clutching at lame excuses just as his team enter the business end of the season, with Roma to come on Tuesday.
"We are not as efficient in the final third as we should be, perhaps because we don't get the ball forward quickly enough, perhaps because we are not relaxed enough. Arshavin showed in glimpses what talent he has on the ball but he is not physically ready."
Arsenal may be unbeaten in 12 league games but draws count for little when you are always chasing. Wenger has gone on record as saying Manchester United are untouchable for the title. But is he now worried about not even qualifying for the Champions League, something that hasn't happened since his first full season in charge? "No because there is a still long way to go. But it will be tight."
Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia admitted his team rode their luck at times but made no excuses for the way they lined up. "Maybe they were not clinical enough but you need a bit of fortune when you come to places like this. When I took over, I wanted the players to come into training with a smile on their faces and gel together. We are more difficult to beat now."

Wenger - Arsenal are "nervous"
Arsene Wenger admitted shot-shy Arsenal were ''nervous'' after theyfailed to score in the Premier League for a third successive game - butmaintained the Gunners can still force their way back into the topfour.
''They tried to frustrate us and did that. We missed chances early and late inthe game and we became nervous in front of goal,'' said the Arsenal manager.
''The attitude is very good among the players but in the final third we are notas efficient as we could be.
''Our passing is sometimes not incisive enough. Maybe the strikers are notalerted quickly enough.
''We were not quick or relaxed enough and, overall, it's difficult.
''Teams come here and play just one colossus up front and we have got to learnto cope with that.''
Wenger, though, insists all is not yet lost as Arsenal seek to maintain theirproud record of playing in Europe's elite competition each season for a decade.
''We are six points behind Villa, but there is still a long way to go. We arenot sitting here with just three games left,'' said Wenger, whose side resumetheir European campaign at home to Roma on Tuesday night.
''Villa have difficult fixtures and we can come back. We also want to go as faras we can in the Champions League.''
Arshavin was taken off just after the hour mark, the Russian still working onhis match sharpness following a transfer deadline day move from Zenit StPetersburg.
It was almost a dream start for the diminutive midfielder when he picked up astray pass from Andy Reid and charged towards the penalty area, beforeunleashing a low drive which flew inches wide.
Arshavin later forced a good save from the busy Marton Fulop with a fierceangled drive.
Wenger believes there is more to come from the 27-year-old playmaker.
''Arshavin showed in glimpses that he has talent and he will be a player,''said the Arsenal manager.
''He has shown as well he is not ready physically, but that will come.
''You could see if he was more on the ball, he can affect the game.
''You feel something will happen in the final third when he has the ball and hecould have scored two goals in the first half.
''I see him playing everywhere around the strikers.''
Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia admitted his side had been somewhat fortunateto come away with a point.
The visitors defended in numbers when needed but also had chances of their own, especially in the first half when Anton Ferdinand and captain Dean Whitehead gotclear on the counter.
''We had a game plan but also we had a lot of luck, but sometimes you need thatwhen you come to places like this,'' said Sbragia, his side now unbeaten intheir last four Premier League games.
''They missed some chances and maybe were not clinical enough, perhaps a bitwild with their finishing, and on another day they could have won by four orfive.
''Coming here we knew we would be under pressure, which is why we tried tofrustrate them, but we also had some counter-attacks as well in the first half,so to come here and get a point, I am delighted.''

Cesc Fabregas Aims To Be Fit For Arsenal By April
The Spanish midfielder is looking to return to the Gunners first-team against Manchester City on April 4...
Spanish international Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he is looking to return to first-team action for Arsenal against Manchester City on April 4.
The21-year-old midfielder, who was handed the Gunners captaincy earlierthis season, has been on the treatment table since suffering kneeligament damage against Liverpool on December 21.
Butthe Euro 2008 winner has already begun light training and now he hasbeen told that he will be able to step it up even further within thenext week or two.
"The doctors have told me that in the next 10 days or so I can start touching the ball again," The Daily Star quotes Fabregas as stating.
"Themost important thing is working on my legs to build them up, which willtake another three weeks or so. Hopefully, in five or six weeks I willbe back playing.
"I am looking at the Manchester City game on April 4 as a realistic comeback date.
"Theproblem with this injury is that it is on my right knee and on theinside of the knee, and of course my game is a lot about passing.
"Itouch the ball 120 times per game, so all of the time I am using thatleg. I have to make sure it is 100% cured before I come back." |
