Residents want Dash re-aligned

OBJECTIONS against the proposed Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (Dash) intensified on Saturday when residents from Damansara Perdana, Desa Temuan Orang Asli Resettle-ment and Mutiara Damansara rallied on the main roads to call for realignment.
The crowd opposed the latest proposal to build the six-lane elevated highway across Jalan PJU 8/1 and PJU 8/2, which they said would affect the lives of more than 10,000 residents.
The protest was attended by Subang MP R. Sivarasa, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong and Wanita Gerakan secretary-general Jayanthi Balaguru.
According to Wong, the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) said they received only two complaints against the proposed alignment when they briefed the state government about the project last week.
She questioned the statistics because by then, a petition that went around the area had already collected more than 2,500 signatures.
“The Mentri Besar then told the two parties that the state could not approve the project and that they had to go back to the local council and the people for more consultation,” she said.
Sivarasa said public transportation should be the solution to traffic congestion, not another tolled way that would be “intrusive and disruptive” to the community.
Mutiara Damansara Phase 10 Residents’ Association chairman David Chai reiterated that squeezing the highway in between the area’s high-density commercial and residential projects was dangerous.
Air and noise pollution, damage to the properties and infrastructure during construction, real estate devaluation and congestion caused by an inflow of traffic from other areas were other reasons brought up by representatives from the condominiums here.
Desa Temuan’s Tok Batin Ismael Chat said the orang asli community did not want the highway to spoil the peace of their 12-year-old neighbourhood.
“We are deeply saddened because the space here is just too small to build such a highway, the people should be the priority,” he said.
Emerald Condominium’s representative Eddy Hong said the residents bought properties in the area at a premium price because they wanted to be away from the congestion which would be the case if the proposed alignment was to proceed.
Engineer Lee Hui Seng, who represented Bukit Lanjan BN coordinator Francis Chong, said his office was in the midst of organising a resident dialogue with the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) to address the issue.
“The highway was proposed by EPU about 10 years ago and was then gazetted as part of the traffic dispersal scheme to alleviate congestion especially near the New Klang Valley Expressway’s Damansara toll,” he said, adding the highway’s initial alignment was along Persiaran Surian but was given to the MRT project.
Lee said motorists from Bukit Jelutong, Bukit Rimau, Kota Damansara and Subang Perdana among others, would benefit from the highway’s direct access to the Penchala Link.
“Be that as it may, there is a need to look for an alignment that will not cause grievance to the residents, hence the need for a dialogue with EPU,” he added.
MHA could not be reached for comments at press time.
