Singapore to host Bollywood extravaganza By Sherwin Loh
BOLLYWOOD actor Amitabh Bachchan was the star attraction yesterday at an event to promote the upcoming International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards here.

The laid-back 61-year-old movie idol charmed reporters at the Grand Hyatt press conference, trading jokes, signing autographs and posing for pictures, while promoting the fifth awards show, which is Bollywood's equivalent of the Academy Awards.
The Singapore IIFA Awards Weekend will take place over three star-studded days, from May 20 to 22, and will include a forum and a celebrity challenge
The forum will feature movie directors including Shekhar Kapur, director of the Oscar-winning drama Elizabeth, and Karan Johar, considered the whiz-kid of Indian movies. It will end with an awards show at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, beamed live to over 400 million viewers worldwide.
Sponsored by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), and organised by IIFA, more than 350 players from the Indian film industry, from directors and producers to stars, are expected.
India makes 900 movies annually and has the world's largest film industry.
The awards are held outside India each year to reflect the global reach of the mostly Hindi-language movies the country produces.
Mr Lim Neo Chian, STB deputy chairman and chief executive, said the Republic would reap benefits from hosting such a high-profile event. It would provide opportunities for creative exchange and collaboration between the film industries of both countries and 'facilitate the making of films', he said.
The Media Development Authority (MDA) will be involved in talks and more details will be available in May.
'One item we will be discussing is some collaboration between our film industry and theirs,' said Mr Lim.
Mr Bachchan said India could learn from Singapore: 'I hope some of the efficiency in Singapore is inculcated into us because we are in desperate need of discipline.'
He added with a laugh: 'During the worldwide telecast, people will get to learn about Singapore, for its beauty, cleanliness and chewing gum laws.'
Mr Bachchan was voted the millennium's biggest star in a 1999 BBC online poll.
His attendance at yesterday's press conference drew more than 70 journalists. They included more than 20 reporters from Britain, Australia, South Africa and Indonesia, flown here by the STB. |

The Eagles are landing...
...One Of These Nights. And that night is Oct 18. Get ready for the American rockers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium
By Jill Alphonso
IT TOOK 10 years to 'catch' The Eagles.
On Oct 18, that effort will finally be rewarded when promoter Lushington Entertainment presents the American rockers in concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The four-time Grammy-winning band, which flew highest in the 1970s and 1980s, now comprise Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit, all in their 50s.
'Asia was never on the major touring map for them,' says Mr Michael Roche, director of Lushington, on the band's favouring of Europe and North America in the past.
Now, The Eagles have included Asia in their flight paths, playing in Hong Kong and Japan too after their Singapore gig.
The one-night show here runs 'into the millions' to organise, Mr Roche says. The band flies in its own sound systems, wall screens, spotlights and sound technicians.
'The only equipment I'm providing are forklifts,' he says.
News of the concert featuring hits spanning a 30-year career have caused a flap among fans though they have to pay $499 for the best seats.
'I remember being 11 years old and hearing Hotel California,' says Mr Aziz Mohammad, 39, a producer for an events promotion company.
'Everyone was singing along to it - it's that distinctive,' he says of The Eagles' arguably most memorable hit in 1976.
Mr Eddie Sung, 45, a retired headhunter, says the band is an essential part of rock history.
'They've grown up and matured since they first put out those hits, so it will probably be very interesting to see their performance now,' he says. He is looking forward to hear New Kid In Town and Desperado.
For many fans, they would have seen what these guys are still capable of live in a DVD called The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over, after they had reformed in 1994.
They had started out in 1971, with members Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Frey and Henley who used to back singer Linda Ronstadt.
Their first hit was Take It Easy in 1972. Along the way, they cemented their reputation as melodic rockers with a social conscience in albums like On The Border and One Of These Nights.
Then came the song and album of the same name - Hotel California - and The Eagles were immortalised forever. But the rock 'n' roll life left its toll too. Leadon left in 1976 and was replaced by Walsh. Schmit took Meisner's place in 1977.
The band broke up in 1981 because of ego clashes but reunited in 1994 with the album Hell Freezes Over.
That promptly flew to No. 1 on the US album charts and they embarked on an American, European and Australian tour.
They proved they still had a talon-hold on baby-boomers - becoming the first band to charge US$100 for arena shows in their 1994 tour in the US.
At a show in 1999, the most expensive tickets went for US$1,000.
Some critics have said that the band remains an expensive nostalgia act. They have not made any new records though they have coughed up an occasional new song for a greatest hits release.
Still, fans have remained loyal and their albums have sold over 120 million copies worldwide.
And not since the Rolling Stones came to town last year has there been another equally high-profile concert.
'We've brought in a lot of legends,' says Mr Roche of Lushington's portfolio which includes Elton John and Bob Dylan.
'But this band has been on our priority list for a long time. They're like the Holy Grail of rock.'
The Eagles will play at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Oct 18. Tickets go on sale on Aug 19. Tickets at $99, $125, $225, $350 and $499 from Sistic (tel: 6348-5555, www.sistic.com.sg). |

Bazaar fit for an Empress
With more than 60 stalls featuring Turkish treats, art works and fashion, there is something for everyone at the ACM Empress Place's Grand Bazaar
ISTANBUL'S Grand Bazaar is coming to Singapore.
On sale at the bazaar are Ottoman-inspired fashion, carpets, handicrafts and souvenirs.
No, the famous 540-year-old shopping bazaar is not relocating, but its atmosphere will be replicated here this weekend.
That is when belly dancers, seductive Middle-Eastern music and fire-eaters weave their magic at the Asian Civilisations Museum's (ACM) Ottoman Grand Bazaar at its Empress Place location.
'We hope to create more awareness among Singaporeans about the museum and hope they will discover their own way of enjoying it,' says Ms Priscylla Shaw, a museum board member who is co-chairing the bazaar.
Entry is free but you have to pay for purchases and food.
You can sample Turkish cuisine and coffee, have your fortune told as well as haggle for carpets, handicrafts and souvenirs at the more than 60 stalls.
Fashionistas should not miss a 3m-by-3m Bedouin Wedding Tent set up at the museum's second-level foyer.p> It showcases Ottoman inspired clothes, art pieces and interior decor items by Om Goddess, a fashion boutique here.
Garments, hand-stitched in west Bengal, India, start from $100.
If music is your thing, Dick Lee will be there on Saturday to entertain. Bands like the Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra and Singapore American School Jazz Band will also perform over the weekend.
Shop till you drop: Soak up the atmosphere of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar this weekend at ACM's Ottoman Grand Bazaar.
Movie buffs have four films to catch at the auditorium on the two days.
They include the animated Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas, starring Brad Pitt as Sinbad, at 10.30am and 3pm; and Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in a love story set in World War II, at 7.30pm.
Tickets for Sinbad are $3 each while those for the other movies are at $5 each.
The bazaar is being held in conjunction with the exhibition, From The Land Of The Ottoman Sultans. Featuring treasures from Turkish pa laces, it is on till Dec 5.
The gem of a payoff this weekend is half-price admission to the exhibition at $2 for students and senior citizens, and $4 for adults. -- Magdalene Lum
ACM's Ottoman Grand Bazaar will be on at its Empress Place location on Saturday (10am - 9pm) and Sunday (10am - 6pm).

This one also I like his music.
One of the greatest musicians the world has ever known, Kitaro has launched a massive Asian tour. He is set to take Singapore by storm this coming, September, where he will perform a one-night concert only that is not to be missed.
It could be said that Kitaro's music is wordless poetry. The GRAMMY |
