ILMU ALAM BRUNEI

This tiny oil-rich Islamic Sultanate lying on the northwest coast of Borneo is known chiefly for the astounding wealth of its Sultan, its tax-free, subsidised society, and the fact that (statistically at least) its population enjoys one of the highest per capita incomes on earth.
Virtually free education and medicinal costs, subsidised rice, amazingly low cost water and electricity, low car tariffs, no income tax and no VAT are just some of it that makes life so much easier here.

Brunei Darussalam, a Malay Muslim monarchy, lies on the northwest coast of Borneo island where it faces the South China Sea.

With a land area of 5,765 square kilometres, it shares a common border with Sarawak, an east Malaysian state, which divides Brunei Darussalam into two; the eastern part is the Temburong District while the western portion consists of Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts.

The 570-sq-km Brunei-Muara District, where the capital Bandar Seri Begawan is located, is the smallest but the most important and populous of the four districts.

The 1166-sq-km Tutong District, the third largest, is home to indigenous groups like Tutong, Kedayan, Dusun and Iban.

The Belait District, the centre of the oil and gas industries, is about 100 km from the capital.

Hilly lowlands, swampy plains and alluvial valleys dominate the Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts in the larger western portion of the Sultanate.

Mountainous terrain abounds in the eastern district of Temburong, which has a land area of 1,288 sq. km.

ALL ABT BRUNEI

The Capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, In The Brunei-Muara District

Bandar Seri Begawan, the Capital City, the only town of any size, seems too big for its 60,000 inhabitants. It is a neat, clean, modern city with wide roads and overstated public buildings.

It is a busy business area and consists of many government departments, which has seen even more development in recent times.

Several areas such as Lambak, Kampong Pengkalan Gadong or Tungku Link, Kg Mata-Mata Gadong, Jalan Muara, Jalan Tutong, Serusop, Berakas (especially the Airport Mall) have opened new business areas that are filled with new buildings, offices and shop lots.

While these areas are developing, the existing commercial hotspots of Gadong and Kiulap have further expanded with the emergence of brand new shop houses offering products and services of all kinds.

`The Mall' at Gadong - Brunei's first, largest and most sophisticated shopping complex with more than 150 shops, a hotel and Cineplex's allocated inside - has just been opened.

Elsewhere, existing landmarks such as the famous Jerudong Park Playground - a state-of-the-art theme park, the newly expanded and refurbished Brunei Darussalam International Airport, the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium Complex and the International Convention Centre continue to garner attention.

Kampong Ayer, the country's historical attraction and the world's largest water village that is home to more than 30,000 people, remains a favourite place of interest along with the rest of Brunei's jewels such as the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosque - arguably the most magnificent mosque in Brunei, the Royal Regalia Museum, the Brunei History Centre, the Royal Ceremonial Hall or Lapau, the Dewan Majlis or Parliament House and Istana Nurul Iman - the world's largest residential palace in the world.

Tutong

The 1,166-sq. km Tutong District, the third largest of Brunei's four districts, is home to indigenous groups like the Tutong Malays, Kedayans, Dusuns and Ibans. Tutong is almost midway between BSB and Kuala Belait.

Temburong

Temburong has a land area of 1,288-sq. km. It is mostly covered with dense, unexploited forestland with mountainous terrain in the eastern part of the district. The main town is Bangar.

Belait

The Belait District, the centre of the oil and gas industries, is about 100 km from the capital. Seria and Kuala Belait, situated about 65 km from the capital, are the largest towns.

sungai temburong bercabang tigaaaaaaaaaa

Temburong District

Batang Duri
About 17km from Bangar, the main town of Temburong - the most forested district - is Batang Duri, an Iban settlement cum park with a longhouse (traditional extended family house) where shifting cultivation is still practiced.

Batang Duri provides visitors with a rare insight into Iban culture and lifestyle.

Taman Batang Duri

This is a landscaped park with a mini zoo that houses civets, monkeys, otters, birds, honey bears, mongoose and crocodiles.

Kuala Belalong Forest Reserve

This forest reserve features 2,000 breath-taking steps that lead to the summit. It affords a panoramic view of the majestic mountains, the rushing river and the surrounding forestland below.

Batu Apoi Forest Reserve & the Ulu Temburong National Park

The Batu Apoi Forest Reserve is an endless spread of thick virgin jungle and inside lies 50,000 hectares of parkland that has seen very little human impact.

Called the Ulu Temburong National Park, this tract features steep, swampy terrain and thick impenetrable jungle land. Because there are no roads that lead here, the only access is only by boat or' temuai'.

A trail from the forest takes visitors to the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre, a research facility set up for the study of the abundant ecological treasures found in these parts. However, charting the difficult terrain to get there requires the help of a guide.

This forest features a seven-kilometre walkway, tree houses about 30 meters high and hanging bridges intended for nature 66 observation of the surrounding mountains and the river and forest below.

The Kuala Belalong Mini Park

Situated at the Temburong Civic Centre Padang, this park which was opened in 1993, has a waterfall, a pond, a landscaped garden and huts similar to those in Kuala Belalong.

However, these are not used for accommodation but for exhibiting pictures of His Majesty's Temburong visits and findings made at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre.

Peradayan Forest Recreation Park

For an eco-tour that comprises caves and strange rock formations, this park would be the ideal place. Spreading over 1,070 hectares, it is declared as a conservation forest by the Forestry Department. The peaks of Bukit Patoi (310m) and Bukit Peradayan (410m) are contained.--Courtesy of Brunei Year Book

Tasek Merimbun

About 27 km inland from Tutong is Brunei's scenic Tasek Merimbun or Lake Merimbun, an unusual `S'-shaped black water lake which has been earmarked as an Asean National Heritage Site.

Actually a flooded segment of a tributary of the Tutong River, this 120-hectare site surrounded by swamps and sedges, has gravestones that dates back to the 15th century.

History has it that this was once the burial ground of early Borneo tribes, notably the Dusun people.

Tasek Merimbun is also the nature lover's delight offering views of bird, plant and insect life. Altogether, the lake covers 7,800 hectares of lake wetland, peat swamp forest, fresh water forest and a lowland mixed Dipterocarp forest.

A tiny island in the centre features a pavilion that provides visitors a place to picnic or just admire the view.
