Germany and Bayern to give Kahn special farewell honour

BERLIN, March 11 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will receive a special retirement send-off after the German Football Association agreed a testimonial match between club and country in September.

The game between Germany and Bayern will take place at the Allianz Arena and mark the end of a 20-year career in which Kahn won a reputation as one of the world's finest keepers.

"It won't be an easy moment for me when I call it a day," Kahn said in a statement. "But the match on Sept. 2 will be a fantastic football night and it's a great honour for me."

Kahn, 38, lost his position as his country's number one to Jens Lehmann ahead of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He won widespread praise for accepting a place in the squad as Lehmann's deputy and was rewarded with a starting slot in the team that beat Portugal to clinch third place, the last of his 86 caps.

Kahn is in his final season at Bayern where he has played with distinction since 1994.

Among other trophies he helped the club win the Champions League in 2001 and was named best player of the 2002 World Cup after Germany reached the final.

Bremen Injury Worries

RANGERS' Euro rivals Werder Bremen could be missing as many as five top team regulars when they face the Light Blues on Thursday night.

Skipper Frank Baumann, full backs Clemens Fritz and Petri Pasanen and strikers Ivan Klasnic and Boubacar Sanogo all missed training yesterday and that is causing coach Thomas Schaaf major problems.

Fritz and Pasanen, who both faced Rangers in the 1st leg of the UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie at Ibrox last week,  trained on their own yesterday but Baumann is suffering from flu.

Ivory Coast striker Sanogo and Croatian star Klasnic appear to have no chance of facing Rangers as the former has a heavy cold and the latter is still suffering from a thigh strain.

Club captain Baumann said:  "I suffered something of a relapse following the two games in quick succession. I have no more stomach problems but I just feel a bit weak. I hope that I will be back to full strength in time for the game."

German Duo Make Progress

Wed 12 Mar, 10:10 PM

Bayer Leverkusen moved a step closer to their second UEFA Cup title after seeing off Bundesliga rivals Hamburg despite a 3-2 loss in their last-16 second leg.

Leverkusen twice went ahead through Sergej Barbarez (18) and Theofanis Gekas (55) only to see Hamburg equalise with strikes from Piotr Trochowski(53) and Jose Paolo Guerrero (64).

Rafael van der Vaart gave Hamburg the lead in the 80th minute but it was not enough for the hosts as Leverkusen, UEFA Cup champions in 1988, moved into the last eight on the away goals rule after the 3-3 aggregate draw.

German rivals Bayern Munich also advanced despite losing their return leg at home 2-1 to Anderlecht.

Bayern built on their 5-0 first leg victory in Brussels when Lucio put them ahead on the night.

But a 20th-minute equaliser from Serhat Akin and an Oleksandr Yakovenko strike 10 minutes before half-time gave Anderlecht victory.

But Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld had started with two 18-year-olds in his XI, including Brazilian debutant Breno.

Zenit St Petersburg squeezed through to the quarter-finals on the away-goals rule thanks to Pavel Pogrebnyak's brace in the second leg of their last-16 tie against Marseille.

Pogrebnyak drove home neat finishes in either half - his second coming in the 78th minute - to sink OM, who were left to rue Andrei Arshavin's late away goal in the first leg last week.

The visitors had their chances to score an away goal themselves in St Petersburg but their finishing let them down.

WerderBremen have played down a post-match argument between two of their starplayers following the UEFA Cup last 16 first leg defeat to Rangers.

"It is true," Hunt told Sportbild. "We'd already had an argument during the game."
Bremen sports director Klaus Allofs claimed that the incident was not serious, however.
"I do not know of a player who never had an argument with his team-mates," Allofs declared.
Diegois currently serving a three-match domestic ban for an incident duringa Bundesliga loss to Eintracht Frankfurt while Hunt is no stranger tocontroversy, having been accused and eventually cleared of raciallyabusing England players during an Under-21 match in November 2006.

Bayern Munich and France schemer Franck Ribery hopes to land theBallon d'Or this year, but has played down comparisons with ZinedineZidane.Ribery has been in stunning form of late and after exceptionalperformances against Anderlecht and Karlsruhe in the past week, Bayerngoalkeeper Oliver Kahn even likened his team-mate to Zidane.
Ribery admits he is enjoying life in his first season inGermany and believes he has a good shot at being named EuropeanFootballer of the Year for 2008.
But he knows he has to go some if he is emulate the career of former Juventus and Real Madrid playmaker Zidane.
"If I stay at this level until the end of the season with Bayernand if I have a good Euro 2008, this could really become a great yearfor me," he said.
"I am thinking of the Ballon d'Or. For me, that would be a dream. And it is something I am going to try to win.
"I am going to do everything to win it one day. I am really thinking about it."
On comparisons with Zidane, he added in French daily L'Equipe: "I am still a notch below him.
"I am hope to (have a career like Zidane's). I will do everything I can. At the moment, I am happy with what I am doing.
"I am still far off Zidane but I still have a lot of years in front of me."
Ribery had two highly successful seasons with Marseille before deciding to move to Germany last summer.

UEFA Cup roundupBayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen reach quarterfinals
LONDON (AP) -- German rivals Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen advanced into the UEFA Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Munich lost 2-1 to visiting Anderlecht but moved past the 1983 winner thanks to last week's 5-0 first-leg victory, while Leverkusen survived a 3-2 loss at Bundesliga rival Hamburger SV to go through on away goals.

The German pair will be joined in Friday's draw for the next round by Zenit St. Petersburg, which beat Marseille 2-0, PSV Eindhoven, Everton and Getafe.
Tottenham coach Juande Ramos' attempt at winning European club soccer's second-tier tournament for an unprecedented third straight season was ended when PSV beat Spurs in a penalty shootout.
Four-time European champion Bayern was effectively through before taking to the field at the Allianz Arena and moved further ahead in the ninth minute when defender Lucio headed a free kick past the goalkeeper.
Serhat Akin beat the offside trap and put a low shot past Bayern's reserve goalkeeper Michael Rensing for Anderlecht in the 20th, and Oleksandr Yakovenko made it 2-1 in the 35th after a mistake by defender Philipp Lahm. However, Bayern still sailed through easily.
Leverkusen held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and twice led on Wednesday. Sergei Barbarez scored in the 18th before Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski equalized in the 53rd.
Fanis Gekas put the visitors back ahead two minutes later with a low shot to the far post but his team had a late scare when Paolo Guerrero made it 2-2 and then crossed to Rafael van der Vaart for a sidefooted goal with 10 minutes left.
"We were lucky to advance today," Leverkusen coach Michael Skibbe said. "This wasn't completely deserved -- but this is another sign of a young team's steady development."
Leverkusen's 23-year-old goalkeeper Rene Adler saved his team several times, stopping first-half chances by Guerreo, Ivica Olic and Van der Vaart.
A third German side, Werder Bremen, gets the chance to advance Thursday but must overcome a 2-0 deficit against visiting Rangers. Bolton will be trying to become the only English team in the quarterfinals when it plays at Sporting Lisbon in the other match.
Tottenham and Everton both overcame first-leg deficits to force extra time before losing in penalty shootouts.
Spurs trailed 1-0 going into the game at PSV's Philips Stadium and looked to be heading out until Dimitar Berbatov volleyed an 81st-minute cross by Pascal Chimbonda from the edge of the box past Brazilian goalkeeper Gomes.
PSV was leading 6-5 in the shootout when Chimbonda put Tottenham's seventh kick wide of the post.
"It was a beautiful game but we sort of made it difficult for ourselves in the beginning," PSV captain Timmy Simons said.
Everton rallied to 2-2 on aggregate against Fiorentina with goals by Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta, but Aiyegbeni Yakubu missed in the shootout and visiting goalkeeper Sebastian Frey then saved from Phil Jagielka to send the Italian side through 4-2 on penalties.
"Sometimes you don't get your just desserts," Everton midfielder Phil Neville said. "We created enough chances to win two or three games."
"Tonight we proved we're a good team. The luck just wasn't with us."
Juan Angel Albin scored with a chip in the 78th minute to lead Getafe 1-0 over Benfica and through 3-1 on aggregate. Albin dodged Konstantinos Katsouranis before curling over goalkeeper Quim with his left foot.
Getafe remained unbeaten in 10 and handed Benfica coach Fernando Chalana -- who replaced Jose Antonio Comacho after his resignation Sunday -- a loss in his debut.
Five opposing managers -- including Camacho and Tottenham's Martin Jol -- have resigned or been fired as the Spanish club swept through its first European campaign

Bayern Munich, seven points in front of second-placed Werder Bremen, and with only one league defeat behind them, travel to the Bundesliga's bottom club Energie Cottbus on Saturday.

The Bundesliga leaders will be without Germany striker Miroslav Klose and Brazil defender Lucio, both injured, and suspended midfielder Mark van Bommel.

Cottbus will themselvs be missing injured strikers Stiven Rivic and Michal Papadopulos as well as suspended captain Timo Rost.

Second-placed Werder Bremen will be have to recover quickly for Sunday's derby against on-form VfL Wolfsburg after being eliminated from the UEFA Cup on Thursday on an aggregate 2-1 against Rangers despite winning the return leg 1-0.

Werder, beaten in their last two league matches, will be without Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who was handed a two-match suspension for a tackle on Mario Gomez one minute from time in their 6-3 defeat last week at VfB Stuttgart.

Also missing will be playmaker Diego, serving a three-match suspension after being sent off two weeks ago in Werder's 1-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hertha Berlin will have coach Lucien Favre on the bench when they travel to Hansa Rostock after the club launched a formal challenge against a two-match suspension after his dismissal in their 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund last week.

Favre was ejected for protesting against a red card for Marko Pantelic that was rescinded moments later when the referee admitted he had made a mistake. Hertha's challenge to the suspension will be considered on Tuesday.

Rostock will be missing four players: Sebastian Haehnge, Stefan Beinlich and U.S. defender Heath Pearce are injured while Christian Rahn is suspended.

Hamburg SV, in third place and eight points behind Bayern, hope to stay in the hunt after being eliminated from the UEFA Cup on Tuesday despite beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at home.

They had lost the first leg 1-0 at Leverkusen last week. Borussia Dortmund will be without injured strikers Diego Klimowicz and Florian Kringe. But defenders Dede and Robert Kovac will be back after completing suspensions.

Title within Bayern's sights

Fri 14 Mar, 08:45 AM

Bayern Munich could move 10 points clear in the Bundesliga and get closer to what coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says is their "most important title".With Werder Bremen slipping up at Stuttgart last weekend, Bayern have opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the table.

Victory over bottom-placed Energie Cottbus on Saturday would allow Hitzfeld's side to take another big step towards winning the Bundesliga for the 21st time.

And Hitzfeld, who will leave in the summer to make way for Jurgen Klinsmann, has set his sights firmly on the domestic title.

"You win the Bundesliga after 34 rounds of hard work, so it is the most important title," he said.

Bayern are on course for a historic quadruple after netting the Premiere Ligapokal - the German League Cup - last August.

A 6-2 aggregate win over Anderlecht has put them into the last eight of the UEFA Cup while they face Wolfsburg in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal next Wednesday and their seemingly unstoppable march to glory is leaving the rest of the Bundesliga with alternative aims.

Five clubs are scrambling for two places in the Champions League with Bremen's recent stumble allowing Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke and even Stuttgart to move back into contention for a top-three finish.

Stuttgart have won four games in a row and will be confident of making it five when they travel to Bochum on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hamburg and Leverkusen, who met in a dramatic UEFA Cup tie on Wednesday, both have the chance to move into second place.

Hamburg, who were knocked out by their Bundesliga rivals despite a 3-2 win, entertain Borussia Dortmund on Saturday while Leverkusen are at home to struggling Nurnberg on Sunday.

Schalke, Germany's only remaining representatives in the Champions League take to the field only hours after learning who they will face in the last eight. They face Duisburg on Friday night.

While it seems those five teams will dispute the places in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup, four further clubs are still lurking in the wings, starting with the Bundesliga's surprise package Karlsruhe.

They entertain Frankfurt on Saturday knowing a win could move them as high as fifth while their opponents also need three points to draw level in 36 points and maintain their own outside hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Wolfsburg, who travel to Bremen on Sunday, may have their minds on other things this weekend.

Next week, they face Bayern Munich for a place in the DFB-Pokal final, which provides Felix Magath's side with the shortest route into the UEFA Cup.

Meanwhile, Hannover have not yet given up their hopes of finishing inside the top six, despite their indifferent form of late.

They entertain Arminia Bielefeld, who have yet to win a single game in 2008, on Saturday with Hansa Rostock at home to Hertha Berlin.

Schalke closes in on leaders with 2-1 win

BERLIN (AP) - Schalke beat MSV Duisburg 2-1 and closed in on the Bundesliga leaders on Friday.

Schalke remained fifth in the standings but moved just two points behind second-placed Werder Bremen.
"That was the tough opponent we expected," Schalke coach Mirko Slomka said. "It was important that we were able to turn around the match after the break." Slomka took another step toward keeping his job, which was hanging in the balance two weeks ago, with the club's second straight league win after a three-match losing skid. A 21st-minute chip shot by Bulgarian Blagoy Georgiev gave Duisburg - a slot above bottom - a 1-0 lead before Kevin Kuranyi leveled kneeing in a pass on the hour. Heiko Westermann put in a rebound of Gerald Asamoah's attempt off the crossbar for the game-winner in the 74th.
