Quake hits Sumatra, tremor felt in Singapore
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.3 shook Indonesia's Sumatra island on Tuesday and was felt in Singapore and Malaysia as well, causing the evacuation of several buildings over 400 km away.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage.
In the West Sumatra provincial capital of Padang, the quake sparked panic among seaside residents who feared it might trigger a tsunami.
However, there was no immediate warning of a tsunami from the quake, which had an epicentre under land.
The United States Geological Survey put its strength at 6.3 and said its epicentre was around 420 km from Singapore. The Indonesian national quake centre measured the quake at 5.8 on the Richter scale.
"It was really strong. I panicked, I ran out of the house just like the other neighbours," housewife Asmiarti, whose home is on the northern Padang shore, told Reuters by phone.
"When we got out, our bodies were still shaking and the trees were also shaking. We fear there would be a tsunami but there has been no announcement so far," she said.
Padang is one of the few Indonesian cities where a tsunami warning system is in place.
A Reuters witness said residents tried to reach higher places and their vehicles crowded main streets in Padang, triggering congested traffic across the city.
Callers told a Jakarta-based radio station that residents in several West Sumatra towns ran out of their houses when the quake was first felt, including some who said the quake knocked off roof tiles.
Tall buildings in Singapore's business district swayed slightly, occupants said, and the tremor was also felt in other parts of the island.
Traders said there was little or no impact on financial markets trading.
The tremor was also felt in west coast areas of Malaysia, the meteorological office in that country said.

Island-wide evacuations following tremors
Following the tremors which hit Singapore, contributions began pouring in to STOMP about the many evacuation measures that were carried out.
Mr. Ong, a 30-year-old company director, was in his Kheng Seng Building office when he and his colleague felt the office furniture shaking.
"We could feel and see the shaking," he said. He snapped photographs of the neighbouring Levis building from his window.
35-year-old Chuk, who was at the Robinson Tower in Shenton Way and didn抰 feel the tremors, but took this picture of the occupants of Hong Leong Building being evacuated as well.
Some office workers in the Raffles Place vicinity were apparently unconvinced by the tremors felt, as noted by 25-year-old Ray Chiang. He said: "An indifferent colleague had to be dragged down the building by her boyfriend, and she kept asking him when she could go up to finish her work."
Fiona Ng, a 23-year-old student, also felt the tremors at Suntec City and sent in this picture to STOMP, after everyone in the buildings had to be evacuated. She told STOMP that announcements were made at 12:13 pm that the "building is fine, and the situation is under control", after which people returned into the building.
Logan Sandran, whose office is located in Cecil Street, and Felicia Chew, who was at Somerset, also felt the earthquake.
"I felt a tremor where I was. I was swaying from side to side, and it happened for a few seconds," a bewildered Felicia wrote.
Even northern areas of Singapore like Ang Mo Kio were affected.
23-year-old Fen was also at the Health Promotion Board and snapped the evacuation there.

Evacuation measures in central Singapore
Following the second wave of tremors felt at 1:49 pm Singapore time, occupants of various buildings in Shenton Way were evacuated, and this time, STOMPer Chuk, who told STOMP he didn't feel it previously, did so.
Office personnel in AIA building (above) were seen milling around, waiting for clearance to get back into the building.
Chuk also took this picture of Hong Leong Building's occupants (below)standing around while waiting for the go-ahead to get into the building.
Logam Sandram also sent STOMP an email about him feeling the tremors from where he is in GB Building, Cecil Street.
Francis Chong, 39, was on the fourth storey in a building in Telok Ayer when he felt the tremors for 'a few seconds' the first time round. "I thought it was just me feeling giddy," Mr Chong said.
Jenny also SMSed STOMP this message at 2:26 pm:"the buildings shook again second time not long ago, at Sultan Plaza."
Over at the OCBC building, STOMPer William told us after the second wave was felt, everyone in the building was evacuated.
"Everyone was calm and orderly," said IT specialist Mr Ang, who told STOMP occupants of Suntec City Tower 4 streamed out despite a lack of announcements over the PA system, to congregate outside the building.

Wednesday March 7, 5:44 AM | | Powerful Indonesia quake kills at least 71
[size=-1]AFP Photo
|
| A powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Tuesday, killing at least 71 people, flattening buildings and sparking panic in the streets of Malaysia and Singapore.
Officials said the death toll was expected to rise in the latest catastrophe to hit the beleaguered nation, and hospitals were quickly overwhelmed with the rush of wounded. Many people were feared to be trapped under rubble.
Communication was cut off from much of the area close to the epicentre of the 6.3-magnitude quake, so there was no immediate way of knowing the extent of the damage there, they said.
But elsewhere doctors were forced to set up shop outdoors, running drips for the injured and working in hastily erected tents. Television showed staff at the main hospital in Padang city scrambling in chaos to cope with the wounded.
"There are 71 people dead and 47 people badly injured," Suryadi, a rescue coordinator on Sumatra, told AFP.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono may visit the disaster site and had ordered police, military, ministers and authorities to coordinate the relief effort, a spokesman said.
United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon was "deeply saddened" by the disaster, his spokeswoman said in a statement, adding that the world body was ready to lend assistance.
The Netherlands pledged two million dollars in aid to buy the most immediate necessities such as medication, medical care and logistical help.
Officials in Indonesia said many people had broken bones and open wounds, and that some had suffered head injuries.
"There are hundreds of victims," the mayor of Solok, a rice-farming area of about 50,000 people close to the epicentre, told ElShinta radio.
"We have asked for medical help," said the mayor, Samsurahim, who goes by one name. "Our facilities here are insufficient."
The quake struck at 10:49 am (0349 GMT), the US Geological Survey said, 49 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra.
Many people were trapped in collapsed buildings and there was no official information about the situation at the quake's epicentre because phone lines were down, Utjin Sudiana, West Sumatra's police chief, told AFP.
"The epicentre is in Batusangkar but communication is disconnected from there so we don't know what the damage is," he said. The town is about 50 kilometres from Padang.
At least one aftershock almost as strong as the quake was felt later.
The devastating Asian tsunami in 2004 was set off by a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, and Tuesday's quake sparked a panic on the Indonesian island and across the region.
In Singapore, which is rarely hit by quakes, hundreds of people cleared out of their office skyscrapers and raced into the streets -- some of them weeping and screaming -- when the ground started to tremble.
"We grabbed our bags and just evacuated," office worker Nicholas Wong told local radio. "Everyone was panicking. One of my colleagues was crying because she had never felt such an effect before."
But there were no reports of any damage in the city-state or in Malaysia, where the quake was also felt.
Indonesia, an archipelago of some 17,000 islands, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet -- and where earthquakes are a regular and often deadly occurrence.
Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004, which killed some 168,000 people in Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra.
Some 5,800 people were killed and 33,000 others injured in a massive quake that rocked Java island in May last year. Two months later, another quake on Java killed more than 600.

Wednesday March 7, 6:17 AM | | Medical institutions felt tremors but no disruptions to workflowSINGAPORE: Tremors following two earthquakes in Indonesia forced more than 120 patients to evacuate from the Outram Polyclinic.
These patients ended up spending about an hour outside the Health Promotion Board building where the clinic is located. The staff were also put on standby in case of further tremors. The National Healthcare Group, which runs the Tan Tock Seng and Alexandra hospitals, reported no cancellation of operations or any evacuations. Parkway Group Healthcare said some staff at Gleneagles Medical Centre felt the tremors but there were no disruptions or evacuations. Gleneagles General Hospital also said surgeries were neither disrupted nor cancelled. - CNA/so

SURI RUMAH TAUKE VCD HARAM
