Kovalainen confident he can beat Hamilton
HeikkiKovalainen joined the McLaren F1 team at the start of the year to teamup with Lewis Hamilton. Kovalainen swapped seats with double worldchampion Fernando Alonso, who was having a hard time at the Wokingbased team. The Finn though is confident he can beat Hamilton to tryand win the championship.
Kovalainendidn't make a secret of it that he is enjoying his time at McLaren. "Itfeels fantastic," he told the Telegraph. "I'm really, really happyhere, enjoying working with these guys. They are motivated, pushinghard. This is what I like.
"I don't know what went wrong lastyear. I think I can bring things to this team. And I can learn a lot. Ican't see myself getting into trouble politically. It's not mybusiness. I'm not interested too much in that side of things. I drivethe car as fast as I can and try to beat everybody. If I can't do thatI'll work with my engineers to be stronger. I like to keep thingssimple."
Kovalainen'steam-mate, Lewis Hamilton, is no stranger to him. They duo already knoweach other when they were just 14 years of age driving go-karts. "Thefirst time I saw him (Hamilton) he was driving go-karts at 14,"Kovalainen said. "I always thought he was a really good driver. Hedefinitely stood out. I was doing well, too. I always thought I couldcompete against him. I'm not afraid of anybody. We were once on thefront of a karting magazine together. That was something quiteexciting. His family were always friendly towards me. It has continuedhere. We can talk about anything, from testing to what we saw on TV."
Butbeing friends or not, when the visor closes there is only one goal: "Mygoal is to win the world championship. I believe I can beat Lewis,"said a confident Kovalainen. "The team guarantees me the same car, so Ihave a chance. I just need to make it work. Lewis almost won thechampionship last year. He gets a lot of attention. He is thesuperstar. What can I do? I need to make my own mark. If I win thechampionship then this time next year people will be more interested inme." |
