Hrithik's Multi-Crore Deal
The entire film industry is staggered by the weight of Hrithik' Roshan's multi-crore three-film deal with Adlabs.
But there is more to boggle Bollywood's collective mind. According to a highly placed source Hrithik has been given a carte- blanche by Adlabs.
Says the source, "Not only has Hrithik been signed for his an unheard-of amount by Adlabs he also has the freedom to pick and choose the nature and genre of the projects.
The superstar is free to choose the director of his own choice, as well as the script, co-star and the rest of the unit and crew for each set-up. In short Hrithik is in complete creative control of what he chooses to do, with whom."
Though the Krissh star isn't allowed to talk about the deal or what kind of films he would like to do with Adlabs, apparently he's looking at the new breed of directors who have come in during the last two years.
In the meanwhile Rakesh Roshan has finally zeroed in on a story idea for his next super-hero film with Hrithik. This film is expected to start sometime towards the end of 2007. At the moment Hrithik is all set to leave for Jaipur to start shooting for Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha-Akbar. Once that's out of the way he starts work on Zoya Akhtar's film. So when would he be able to do the three films for Adlabs?
"Oh, that's no problem. The deal stretches into three years. So Hrithik can spread out the films as and how he likes,"says the source.
In the meanwhile Bollywood's highest paid actor was busy on Wednesday night bringing in his wife Suzanne's birthday on Thursday. "I'll speak about all this at the right time."

John admits Khans are the ruler of the film industry!
There is no doubt that John is the new brightest star in Bollywood and his brightness is increasing day by day. Already his popularity is too high especially for the young generation. From his debut film 慗ism' he has been changing himself rapidly. In 慏hoom' he has done even a role with a negative shade. However John has no qualms admitting that his number comes much below than the Khans. 揟he Khans are right up there while my number comes much below and my flop rate is higher than the Khans. |

Kajol and Karan Johar partied till the wee hours!
It's a common knowledge that actress Kajol shares a very good rapport with filmmaker Karan Johar. Recently we got to see a glimpse of their sweet camaraderie at Malaika Arora Khan's 31 st birthday party, where the duo partied till the wee hours of the morning.
They came together with hand in hand and rocked the dance floor like anything. Also there was Shahid Kapoor and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri, Salman Khan and his girlfriend Katrina Kaif enjoyed happy time in the party. Salman's father Salim Khan, mother Salma and Helen were also present in the party. Malaika Arora Khan's sister actress Amrita Arora played a perfect host. Preity Zinta also spotted in the party in rocking mood; however the centre of the focus was Shah Rukh and Salman, who got together in the party and talked with each other putting a full stop to the all speculation on their much-talked-about rivalry.

Salman and John Abraham yet not made up?
Still Salman Khan and John Abraham are not easy enough to talk with each other. The two Bollywood hunks had got into a brawl in their last world tour and since then they have not seen each other's face. Even Salman Khan had refused to shoot 態aabul' with John, however it was solved after director Ravi Chopra intervened and made them stand together before camera. Meanwhile there was a rumour spread in the air that Salman and John Abraham have set to bury their hatchet on the request of John's girlfriend Bipasha Basu, who is also a friend of Salman Khan. Also it's heard that Salman and John have agreed to participate another world tour together. However the truth is that they have not been patched up yet. Recently at 態aabul' music launch party, there was a ramp show where all the 態aabul' cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherji and Hema Malini did rampwalk. Salman and John also were present and rocked ramp however separately and to surprise of many they gave each other the cold shoulder and completely ignored each other's presence.

I shortened my hair for Don: Priyanka Chopra
Remember Zeenat Aman's Lady Diana hairtstyle in Chandra Barot's Don? That was actually a wig. Zeenat with her multi-shift schedule could hardly afford to cut her hair.
Continuity was always a problem in the way of credibility for the superstars of yesteryears. When Rajesh Khanna had to sport a beard for his fugitive's role in Yash Chopra's Ittefaq, he appeared simultaneously in more than half of Raj Khosla's Do Raaste with a beard梣uite unnecessarily out of character.
Now, of course stars have more freedom. Sighs Priyanka, "I did Don at a stretch卆nd boy do I feel stretched! I've never felt better. The amount I've worked-out in the last one month I've made up for my whole life. The stint with the trainer in England has done me a wealth of good.
In fact one reason why I stayed in a separate hotel away from the rest of the crew for Dharmesh Darshan's Aap Ki Khatir is because my hotel had a gym in it. I feel fit and fine. I had never seen the inside of a gym.
But now I intend to work-our regularly |

I enjoy Shah Rukh's inputs: Farhan Akhtar
The tuning between Farhan and his leading man Shah Rukh is the talk of Bollywood. "We were friends from before Don. See, both Shah Rukh and I are ardent fans of Don and Mr Bachchan. When we finally started started working together it was like his enthusiasm combined with mine.
Shah Rukh's energy level is very infectious. He gives very intelligent suggestions. And since I'm always open to suggestions梬ho says I'm not, that's totally untrue-- I enjoy Shah Rukh's inputs. We had a whole lot of fun. Though I must tell you it was a lot of hard work. I can't even begin to describe what it was like over there (in Malaysia)."
Talk veers to the much talked-about Khai pe paan benaras wala song-and-dance whuch they recently shot. "We knew what Mr Bachchan had done to the song in the earlier Don. Shah Rukh and I weren't even thinking about it when we took the plunge. First of all, we're a great fan of the song.
It's truly a monster of a song. But what Saroj-ji (Saroj Khan) did with Khai ke paan is incredible. Of course there's an element of deja vu in the choreography. But Saroj-ji has taken the number somewhere else."
The feisty filmmaker takes a deep breath. "In fact all of us are paying a homage to the earlier Don. It's true that we've improved on the technical value immensely. But how far could we go with technique alone?
Whether it's Shah Rukh, Priyanka, Arjun Rampal, Isha Koppiker, Boman Irani, Om Puri, or Kareena doing that incredible number Yeh mera dil pyar ke deewana by Helenji, we see our efforts as a tribute to a film we've all seen and loved featuring our ultimate screen hero Amitabh Bachchan."
Farhan regrettably doesn't recall ever going on the sets of Chandra Barot's Don as a child which his dad Javed Akhtar had written.
"All my nostalgia for the film comes from watching Don on screen. It's taken me to a totally new territory. It's fun but also very stressful, and not because people are going to compare my film with the previous Don.
That doesn't bother me. I just wonder if my vision would come through in the film. The rest is all hypothetical right now."

Ash looks good most of the time: Puru Rajkumar
Q: What is your role in Umrao Jaan?
A: I play Gauhar Mirza who is the son of a rich Nawab and a kothewali. Money stops coming in after his father dies and he is left at the mercy of kothas. He grows up with Umrao. He is Umrao's first love.
Q: What made you take up this role?
A: J P Dutta and Shabana Azmi. Working with them is an honour for me.
Q: Is it the same as Naseer's character from the original?
A: The way I understand it, I don't think so. The character has too many shades- anger, love, frustration and jealousy. From whatever I know, Dutta's film is not a remake of Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan. Here we are dealing with Umrao from the stage of being Amira which was her name before she became a jaan.
Q: Are you confident about the film?
A: Period films mostly don't do well- Asoka, Mangal Pandey... A: (Interrupts) I have a very good feel for the film. If the audience shares my level of enthusiasm for it, there is no reason why it won't click.
Q: But J P Dutta is known for his war films?
A: That's the beauty of this film. He has only made testosterone driven movies. This one is an estrogen driven one. And I am not complaining to be in a film where I was surrounded by beautiful women (laughs). If he has made only one type of movies in the past, it does not mean that he can't do something different.
Q: Even his last film with you LoC didn't shake up the turnstiles?
A: That you say in hindsight. Could you have said that before? Same way, there is no hundred per cent guarantee for the success of any film until it has hit the theatres, be it this Umrao Jaan or the old one. If we knew for sure what was going to happen, this film industry would have been a totally different place to be in.
Q: The music of the film is not doing well?
A: Says who? In fact, I have heard that it's doing pretty good.
Q: Compare Rekha and Ash in the two Umrao Jaans?
A: I wouldn't compare them. I know that comparisons are inevitable, but they are unfair. Rekha and Ash are two different personalities. If you ask me whether Ash has done a good job, the answer is yes. If you ask me whether Ash has looked good in the film, she looks good most of the time anyway.
Q: Who would you vote for Rekha as Umrao Jaan or Ash as Umrao Jaan?
A: Both.
Q: You can't cast two votes?
A: Then, I abstain from voting (laughs)
Q: What was the most difficult part for you in the film?
A: The character has too many shades, but J P Dutta made my job easier. Dutta doesn't work with a script. He has an in-depth vision of every character he deals with.
Q: So you were not given a bound script?
A: No. But I didn't expect it either. I have worked with Dutta in LoC and I know.
Q: Okay, but I still don't have an answer to what was the most difficult part for you?
A: Well, there is one scene that comes to mind where I needed four retakes to get it right. That's when I get to know that Umrao has become a jaan. I had to emote sadness, frustration, defeat and lots more.
Q: Who has done your costumes and were you comfy in those?
A: There is no richness in my clothes. There are some interesting kurta pyjamas. And surely, I was very comfy in them. I don't know who designed them. But I was given those by Dutta and Bindiya.
Q: How were Abhishek and Aishwarya as co-actors?
A: Absolutely no problem. He was there in LoC, but I had no scenes with him. I wanted to work with him. I am fond of him. Maybe because I am in awe of his father. I had worked with Ash in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and there is a certain comfort level between us.
Q: Did you get friendly with them and keep in touch after the shooting was over?
A: Unfortunately, no.
Q: Is it because they were too engrossed in themselves and did not mix sufficiently?
A: Nothing like that. Basically, I also am a reserved person.
Aishwarya Rai

I'm not worthy of such recognition: Amitabh Bachchan
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan says he'd like to see India make inroads into the world, which he hopes will look at this nation "with more admiration and compassion".
"I'd like to see our country make inroads into the world. I'd like the world to look at India with more admiration and compassion," Amitabh told.
On bagging the French Legion Award this year, he said: "It's my job to do whatever I'm asked. It's up to institutions to award and reward. Whatever is given to me, I respect it. But if such honours don't come my way I wouldn't brood about it."
The actor, who celebrated his 64th birthday Oct 11, said: "I was with my mother and the rest of my family during most of the day. I liked that."
Q: A rather subdued birthday for you this year.
Subdued in what sense? Birthdays are just another day. I've never looked at them as something unusual. It was the day I was born, and in that respect it's a special day. My mother is in hospital and a dear friend Lalit Suri passed away. In fact I was at the funeral the day after my birthday. But I don't want to categorize it as subdued.
Q: So was it a day well spent?
I was with my mother and the rest of my family during most of the day. I liked that. Then some friends dropped by for dinner.
Q: Is family the most important component of your life?
That happens to be the case with everyone, doesn't it? You've doubts about that?
Q: Did you ever think t what life would be like 'When You're 64'?
Just because the Beatles sang a popular song about being 64, it isn't a benchmark. 64 is just an age. One looks at it as another year in one's life, nothing more nothing less.
Q: What a birthday gift France has given you!
I'm quite surprised |

Public laughed at Shilpa Shetty: Akashdeep Sehgal
Television actor Akashdeep Sehgal, who was eliminated from Sony's popular dance show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa", doesn't regret his tirade against the judges - Farah Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty.
Q: What was the need to pull up the judges when you got eliminated?
A: I didn't pull up the judges! All I did was to clean my spirit. People have taken it in the wrong sense. I can't allow anyone to take away spirit.
Q: So how was your spirit being crushed?
A: From Day 1 on Jhalak Dikhla Jaa I've been getting special kind of treatment from the judges. When Mahesh Manjrekar did Salsa he put Lavni in it. The judges applauded him. When Ajay Jadeja did a flip Farah missed a heartbeat. When I did a flip it became acrobatics.
When the mango fell out of Mahesh Manjrekar's hand they gave him extra points!!! How do you justify this? See, I'm not here to criticize anybody. May God beless Farah, Sanjay and Shilpa. But what did Shilpa mean when I was doing Samba and she called it a Salsa? The entire public laughed and corrected her.
She laughed and said, 'Oh my God! See how confused we judges are about the dance forms.' It's another matter that these moments got edited out. But if as a judge you are confused about dance forms, what are you doing in that chair?
Q: You sound agitated.
A: All my life I've been a fair person. I don't want to feel ashamed when I look at myself in the mirror. When I did Samba which is a dance of celebration and I put it into Rang de basanti which is a song of the nation 杛eplete with colour flags梩he judges were left cold.
Q: So maybe they didn't like your mix 'n' match style
A: The song was two minutes long, and they said I wasted forty seconds in putting tilak on the judges. Arrey, first understand the Indian sentiments. I'm 30 and I know how to respect my country. And how could I have wasted forty seconds doing Tilak. Does that mean I hardly danced at all?
Q: So do you think you were treated unfairly?
A: What I said last night on the show, I'll say again and again. I was just saying what came to my heart.
Q: Even your choreographer is quoted as saying you are a bad loser.
A: That's complete crap. Bindi thinks of me as her mentor. She hasn't given any interview about me. None of these comments attributed to me are mine. Look, this is the way I am. I can't learn to be manipulative at 30. Maybe the judges didn't know they had wronged me. It was my duty to point it out to be. The whole Rang de basanti item represented the the spirit of India.
Q: So you feel victimized?
A: No, they aren't big enough to victimize me.
Q: People say you were being nasty because of your broken relationship with one of the judges
A: I spoke because things weren't looking right. Why would I choose the show to tell her what I felt? I'd have called up three years ago and told her what I thought. I got calls from all over the country. Everyone is saying, 'What a show! What a great person you are!' Main junta ka aadmi hoon.
Q: You are quoted as saying you shouldn't have gone on the show because Farah Khan is a judge.
A: Yeah I thought she was professional and must have grown out of whatever happened. But I no longer regret going on the show. This was a reality show where everyone's true self came out in the open. I'm happy people saw me the way I am. I kept saying 'Thank you, God bless you' throughout. Did any of the judges show me any of the courtesy that they did to the other contestants?
Q: What next?
A: I had kept my film Ahsaas: Key To Life on AIDS which I'm producing, on hold. I'm going back to it. The story, screenplay, dialogues, art direction, choreography, direction |

Big B wiped off Gabbar's image: Ram Gopal Verma
It's Day 2 of Ram Gopal Varma Ka Sholay and the indefatigable Ram Gopal Varma is shooting with his new-age Gabbar in a house near Yari Road in suburban Mumbai.
"It's Mr Bachchan's introductory scene. I had to start with Gabbar Singh's scenes first. And what can I say? Thirty years of the impact that Amjad Khan had on me as Gabbar Singh, has disappeared in one days' shooting. In the very first shot Amitji just bowled me over. For a guy like me who has grown up on Gabbar Singh and everything that I know about filmmaking came from watching Sholay |

Fardeen moves court!
In a move to attract lesser penalty, Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan, embroiled in a drug seizure case, has moved Bombay High Court seeking permission to undergo detoxification at a de-addiction centre. If the court grants him permission and the actor comes out clean after detoxification, the prosecution against him for possessing drugs could be withdrawn, said his lawyer.

Now Aishwarya versus Rekha!
Can Aishwarya Rai wipe out the image of Rekha as Umrao Jaan in people's mind? Well, for the answer we just need to wait a few hours now. But Rekha is not the one to lie low and see herself being stripped of the diva title by an actress her daughter's age. No, Rekha has put her heart and soul together to keep her aura intact and keep reminding people that she's the real one.
And that has taken the form of yet another courtesan role in Goutam Ghose's 慪atra'. This film also has a mujra filmed on Rekha and reportedly she has excelled in that, too. Now Rekha wasn't just satisfied with the dance looking good. She wanted to put 憏atra' up against 慤mrao Jaan' and so a back-to-back release of the film along with 'Umrao Jaan'. Though the tentative date so far announced is November 10, that's a week after |
