Malaika is sexier than everyone: Samir Nair

Samir Nair , CEO Star Entertainment India, answers charges of SMS-fudging on Nach Baliye 2...

Q: What's the truth about Maanav and Shweta feeding SMS votes for themselves on Nach Baliye?
A: I feel sorry for those two contestants. They've done nothing wrong. In any of these competitive shows there's a certain amount of canvassing. We've our own inbuilt security measures to ensure no one misuses the voting system on Nach Baliye.

For example we allow no more than 20 votes from the same e-mail ID or phone number. Last year during Nach Baliye Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar were running scrolls on cable systems from the interiors of Maharashtra. It's legitimate garnering of votes.

This year Tenaaz and Bakhtriar are distributing tee-shirts with their own pictures at traffic signals. As a matter of routine all couples try in their own way to optimise their votes.

Q: But buying so many SIM cards?!
A: It's only routine to get your uncle, aunt and other relatives to vote for you. Because in any case after twenty calls from the same number, we automatically stop taking votes. A contestant needs to buy two million SIM cards to make a difference. So I think we're being unfair to these two contestants. There's nothing wrong in getting your relatives and friends to vote for you.

When on Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Debojit won it was said he got votes from his home state Assam.. When Abhijit Sawant won on Sony's Indian Idol there was talk of Maharashtrian votes.

When Sachin and Supriya won Nach Baliye last year there was a felling that Maharashtra was behind them in spite of their great performance. The contestants do play up their constituencies. Maanav and Shweta's SIM cards going into the wrong hands is really not their fault.

Q: Last year there was a similar controversy on Nach Baliye regarding Manish Goel and Poonam Nirula.
A: It was exactly the same situation. They bought SIM cards and gave them to their friends and family. We're aware of this strategy. But like I said, we block the SIM card after twenty votes.

A few weeks ago there was a mini-scandal when on Nach Baliye it was alleged that Saroj Khan was asked to give one of the contestants Shweta Tiwari a 10 you asked for it.

Well匰hweta got eliminated. So her supposed friendship with me didn't help her. Seriously, this is too funny.

Q: What about the Jhalak

Real Tawaif helped Aishwarya!

Making a new film on the life and times of the legendary Lucknow tawaif Umrao Jaan Adaa hasn't been an easy task for Movie Moghul J.P. Dutta.

And now just days before the release of Umrao Jaan comes the news that the Shia section of Lucknow feel JP's film does injustice to that city and its prized tawaif.

According to a report in a Mumbai paper, Maulana Yatoo Babbar (who's apparently a descendent of a Nawab family) and Nawab Mir Jaffar Abdullah (apparently of royal lineage) are unhappy that the film hasn't been shot in Lucknow and that not enough attention has been paid to period details and other research.

Incidentally Nawab Mir Jafar Abdullah was not only part of Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan, he also desired to be in the cast of J.P.Dutta's Umrao Jaan.

JP, neck-deep in release hassles takes time off to laugh at the allegation. "It just goes to show how much research these guys have done before making such accusations against my film. I shot two long schedules in Lucknow stretching into nearly sixty days.

In fact Umrao Jaan is dedicated to the city of Lucknow and its people. They co-operated so much. I had heard about the unruly crowds of Lucknow. On the contrary the local crowds were there."

As for the research, JP explains, "We had a gentleman and scholar named Yasa Rizvi with us from the start. He's an authority on that period. What's more I had a 70-year old lady named Zarina Parveen who's the last of the tawaifs constantly on the sets. She was there to instruct Aishwarya on the adaas."

JP not just contributed considerably to the choreography of the Mujras, he shot Ash's dances with three cameras. "That's a scaling-down. We had nine cameras for LOC," quips JP.

As for the unhappiness of the Shia community over Umrao Jaan, JP shrugs. "The Shiates of Lucknow told me they were very happy to co-operate. 'Hum par aapka bahut badaa karz hai. Aap Husaini Brahamin hain.' You see the Duttas fought a war with the revered Husain. If the Shiates are today pointing a finger at me they're pointing a finger at the Husaini Dutta."

Why the constant attack on Umrao Jaan ?

Explains JP, "Umrao Jaan is the first big-budget mainstream Hindi film shot voluntarily in Lucknow. Other films like Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Shyam Benegal's Junoon and Muzzafar Ali's Umrao Jaan were shot in the city because they couldn't afford to shoot on elaborate ostentatious sets.

I chose to shoot in Lucknow because I owed it to the city, and Umrao's memory. I chose Lucknow not because of lack of choices, but because it was my only choice. No one demanded any money from me for shooting in Lucknow.

When I first landed in the city to meet the parents of a dead soldier for LOC, I had decided I had to make a film in Lucknow. I shot almost sixty days in Lucknow for Umrao Jaan."

He pauses for breath. "This isn't a small manageable arthouse film. It's a big film on a legendary poetess and courtesan. So far such films were seen to be the creative property of avant-garde filmmakers.

The myth might be broken now. As for the questions about Aishwarya Rai's ability to portray Umrao, they'll be answered in ample measures when the film releases."

Ash badly needs a hit now!

The first new release due to hit theatres, "Umrao Jaan," is based on the book that tells the tragic story of a courtesan in northern India in the twilight of Mughal rule.

The story revolves around a girl kidnapped from home and sold to a brothel, where she learns to sing, write, dance and captivate wealthy men. She later falls in love with a Muslim prince, but he refuses to marry her.

"Though Umrao Jaan is a story based in the 19th century, this story could take place anywhere in India today. This could be the story of so many girls," the former Miss World told reporters last week.

"This is a big phase for Aishwarya. She is the international face of Bollywood," a films trade analyst Pramod Natha told.

A local press report said the films represented a critical phase in Rai's Bollywood career, after just three of 30 movies she made in the past decade were hits at the box office.

"At 33, this is her last chance to prove herself in these movies," the Hindustan Times daily newspaper said last week, quoting trade analyst Amod Mehra.

The star's two other releases, a sequel to the hit biking gangster movie "Dhoom2," and "Guru," a film about the life of a business tycoon in India, are scheduled for release in the next two weeks.

Rai, a Cannes film festival favourite in recent years, was voted among the top 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2004-05.

Is Mulayam victimising Amitabh-Jaya complainants?

Three people in Uttar Pradesh file complaints against Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya.

One's petrol pump is raided, another's shop licence is suspended and the third's standing crop is looted - coincidence or is it because they all dared take on Bollywood's first family despite its known proximity to the state government?

That is the question doing the rounds here -- and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party government may soon be forced to answer.

Petrol pump owner Ameer Haider, farmer Satya Narain Sharma and ration shop owner Vijay Pal Gautam, all from Lucknow's adjoining district of Barabanki, have met Governor T.V. Rajeswar and submitted representations seeking his intervention to save them from "undue harassment on account of mala fide intentions of the government".

The controversy centres on the free allotment of prime government agricultural land to Bachchan in Barabanki district.

According to public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Shukla and Gautam in the Allahabad high court, nearly three bighas (about 75,000 sq ft) of government land has been allotted to the film star in violation of all norms and rules.

Ameer Haider brought up the issue when he complained to the Election Commission objecting to Jaya Bachchan's nomination by the Samajwadi Party to the Rajya Sabha.

According to sources, the authorities let loose their ire on the Barabanki-based petrol pump owner. His premises were raided a few days ago.

And close on its heels came action against Shukla, who alleges that his standing crop on more than five bighas of land was forcibly chopped and carried away by Samajwadi Party goons.

"My plea to the local administration has gone unheeded and I have been threatened with dire consequences if I pursue my petition against Amitabh," he said.

Shukla's co-petitioner Vijay Pal Gautam's ration shop licence was suspended on "flimsy" grounds Monday.

The petitioners accused Amitabh of "wilful concealment and misrepresentation of facts".

"In an obvious bid to avoid identification, Bachchan has mentioned his name as just Amitabh and even in his father's name, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, he has cleverly dropped Bachchan," Shukla told.

The provision for free allotment of agriculture land was made under the Zamindari Abolition Act to facilitate livelihood for poor landless people in villages. This could be given only to landless Dalits, landless farm workers, freedom fighters, widows below poverty line or disabled former military personnel.

Under no circumstances can any 'gram sabha' land, or village land, be allotted to anyone not belonging to the area.

Amitabh has no connection either with the village or even with Barabanki district, said sources. The allotment was earlier cancelled by previous district magistrate A.K. Goel, who was subsequently moved out.

However, the present Barabanki district magistrate Rama Shankar Sahu has flatly denied the allegations. He also sees "no irregularity" in the allotment of the gram sabha land to the superstar.

"Since the matter is sub judice, I would not like to make any further comment on it," he pleaded.

Denying that there was any kind of targeting, Sahu told: "Whatever action has been taken against the petrol pump or the ration shop was strictly in accordance with rules."

Fardeen wants to go to de-addiction centre

In a move to attract lesser penalty, Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan, embroiled in a drug seizure case, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking permission to undergo detoxification in a de-addiction centre.

If the court allows him to do so and the actor come out clean after detoxification, the prosecution against him for possessing drugs could be withdrawn, his lawyer Ayaz Khan claimed.

The petition, filed by the actor, is expected to come up for hearing some time next week.

Under section 64 A of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, an accused can apply for detoxification if he is found in possession of small quantity of drugs for personal consumption and on being satisfied that he has successfully undergone detoxification, the prosecution may withdraw charges.

On September 22, the trial court had rejected Fardeen's plea to undergo detoxification. Fardeen has now moved the High Court challenging the trial court's order and also seeking permission afresh for detoxification. Fardeen was arrested in May 2001 by Narcotics Control Bureau in suburban Juhu when he was about to buy one gram of cocaine from a drug peddler. He was released on bail later.

The NCB had seized nine grams of cocaine from the peddler Nasir Khan who told police that the actor wanted to buy just one gram of cocaine for personal consumption. However, the chargesheet against him has said Fardeen was in possession of nine grams and not one gram of cocaine.

Nine grams of cocaine attracts punishment upto ten-years' of rigorous imprisonment while in case of possession of one gram, an accused can be let off with detoxification. Under NDPS Act, possession of commercial quantity (100 grams) of drugs is punishable with ten years RI, while possessing drugs between two and 100 grams is punishable upto ten years.

As against this, possession of small quantity (less than two grams) of drugs allows the accused to seek one-time amnesty from the prosecution by undergoing detoxification.

The trial court had recently rejected the actor's claim to amend the charges framed against him on the ground that he wanted to buy just one gram of cocaine and not nine grams alleged by NCB.

Fardeen contended that even the drug peddler had admitted that the actor wanted to buy just one gram of cocaine. The court, however, felt that Fardeen's plea was premature and he could approach the court at a later stage.

Salman appear before Rajasthan court

Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Satish Shah appeared before the Rajasthan High Court here Thursday in connection with the poaching of chinkaras, a protected species of gazelle, during the shooting of a film in 1998.

"The court has so far not fixed a date for next hearing in the case," said Hastimal Saraswat, counsel for Salman Khan.

"Salman and Satish Shah appeared before the court to mark their personal attendance as the court had asked them to do so," Saraswat told.

The court had on July 31 issued bailable warrants of Rs.5,000 against Salman and seven others and asked them to appear personally before the court.

The ruling had come after the court admitted a Rajasthan government appeal for enhancing the jail term awarded to him by a local court in the Bhavad village poaching case.

The government's plea had challenged a lower court's acquittal under various sections of the Indian Penal code and the Arms Act while finding him guilty under the Wildlife Protection Act.

On Feb 17, Salman was sentenced to one-year imprisonment and fined Rs.5,000 by a lower court here that found him guilty of killing two chinkaras at Bhavad village in Jodhpur district on the night of Sep 26-27, 1998, during the shooting of Sooraj Barjatya's "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

I chose roles unwisely: Bobby

One of Bollywood's most self-effacing stars is finally coming into his own. For long the star in exile, Bobby Deol's career is working out卛n more ways than one.

"I've been working out religiously lately. You know that one push that you need to do the right thing? I knew I was neglecting myself. But I needed to get into shape for my boxer's role in Anil Sharma's Apne That was reason enough to start working out. And now I feel more happy and comfortable than ever before."

There's plenty of reason to feel pleased. Bobby recently completed a very unusual film called Nanhe Jaisalmer directed by Samir Karnik (of Kyun匟a Gaya Na).

"It took me to a totally new territory. It's unlike anything I've done so far. I play Bobby Deol in the film," the star reveals shyly. "And the most surprisingly part of shooting in Jaisalmer was, there was a sandstorm and rains together."

Years ago dad Dharmendra had played himself in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi. Now it's Bobby's turn.

And if that honour hasn't turned Bobby's head try this. A confectioner in Mumbai named Milinda has named a yummy multi-layered cake after Bobby.

"When I heard about the cake I was flattered, honoured and very very moved. You know we're a large family and we've birthdays all the time. This lady makes all our cakes. I know she's fond of me.

But I never imagined she'd actually make a cake from all those ingredients that I love. I've a major weakness for sweets. And to me this is a truly emotional homage to my sweet tooth. I don't know if anyone else has a cake named after him."

Bobby's cup of 'wow' runs over. After a lull of nearly three months when he been working out and spending time with his two sons, Bobby is now into two major films.

"I have Suneel Darshan's film Shaka Laka Boom Boom (co-starring Kangana Ranaut) ). Suneel has now moved to a different level. He's moving away from the family-oriented drama. He realizes that today's films have to be targeted at the youth.

Even I'm asked all the time why I don't do more films Soldier and Gupt. I guess audiences do want to see me in young energetic films and roles. Suneel's new film is a complete departure. Again, I play a role different from anything I've done so far. I must admit it has shades of grey in it," Bobby says cautiously.

"I think our cinema is shedding its skin. Just as people apply facial creams and get face lifts to get younger our films too are undergoing a change. I'm definitely going to be part of that change."

And if you think the excitement ends for this year with Suneel's unorthodox drama, here's more. Bobby teams up with Abhishek Bachchan in Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar.

Says Bobby, "I've never worked with Abhishek before, though I know him very well. Abhishek is great fun. He makes you laugh all the time. We came close to working together in Abbas-Mustan's Humraaz. I think he was terrific in Yuva. "

Some eyebrows have been raised about Bobby doing a film for Yash Chopra whose banner Sunny Deol had fallen out with after Darr. Bobby laughs away the old cold war. "Kuch to log kahenge. Why do they need to dig into an old book of feuds for masala? I know my brother had a problem with the banner. But that's long forgotten. We've all moved on. Why hold on to the past specially when it's unpleasant?"

Bobby talks with characteristic fondness about his family. "We all live together. Now that I've stopped being the baby of the family I feel responsible towards the family. I think I've become more mature in the last few years.

I admit I chose roles unwisely. But I don't regret doing any of them. One learns from one's mistakes. Today I'm choosing very cautiously. I was very happy being at home for nearly three months. I needed to connect with my sons at this time when they're growing up.

I remember how Sunny Bhaiyya and I missed dad during our growing years because he was busy working for his family. I can afford to take it easy. But now it's time to get back to work. I'm looking forward to working with Suneel Darshan again, and with Shaad Ali for the first time."

Bobby talks with some pleasure about the 'family film' Apne. "It's not exactly a family film. We Deols aren't producing it. For now we're happy just acting. When it comes to taking a financial risk in film production. it's good to be a son-in-law instead of a father-in-law.

Apne is a family- friend Anil Sharma's film. It's an emotional family film. It's about a father's dreams for his sons. Our dad Sunny and I are together for the first time. Let's hope the audience is as excited about it as we are. We're looking at a Diwali release." Any regrets about being so laidback about his career? "None at all. Some people make plans for their life. I didn't. I'm happy with what I've got. Yeah, I missed out on some good roles like Mani Rathnam's Yuva.

But that's okay. What isn't meant to be in life, won't be.Thankfully I'm becoming more comfortable with people outside the familiar circle. I'm ready to break free."

Queen of Hearts Ash turns 33

She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 on Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in Umrao Jaan and an oomph girl in Dhoom 2.

The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, is currently busy promoting her two films. In Yash Raj Films' upcoming Dhoom 2, Aishwarya plays a hi-tech thief along with Hrithik Roshan, while in JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan, a screen adaptation of Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada and a tragic historical, she plays a courtesan.

"When Dutta narrated the script to me, I told him that if you get Aishwarya to play the role of Umrao Jaan only then make the film, else drop it. According to me, the character requires an enigmatic quality to it. This is what I feel Aishwarya's personality symbolises," said well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar on the actress.

"Hers is a personality that is a kind of riddle. Even Dutta felt the same way and now after watching the finished product I feel that no one else could have made it."

However, there is a notion among some that she is not a good actress and has hogged the limelight mainly for her looks, and her affairs with co-stars Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi.

"Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. Dutta is not only a good director; he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," New Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta said.

Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2 will put to test her versatility. Critics believe that so far only Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been able to extract the best out of her in his hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.

However, post Devdas Aishwarya shifted her focus to Hollywood. Her first international venture was Gurinder Chadha's Bride & Prejudice. Some of her current international projects include - Provoked, The Last Legion opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and Chaos.

Besides that, she has graced the covers of international magazines like TIME, which placed her on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today". Aishwarya has also been termed as one of the most beautiful women by TIME magazine.

Aishwarya, whose last Hindi release was Shabd that sank without a trace at the box office, is hoping to hit the bull's eye with Umrao Jaan, Dhoom 2 and Mani Rathnam's Guru. While Umrao Jaan releases on November 3, Dhoom 2 is set for a Nov 24 release and Guru would release in December.

Aishwarya Rai's face stopped J.P. Dutta from going to war again

The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai made J.P. Dutta change the genre of his films leading him to make Umrao Jaan .

"Aishwarya is my Helen of Troy whose face stopped me from going to war again," quipped Dutta, director of war-zone magnum opuses like Border and LoC Kargil .

At the premier of the film in Dubai on Thursday, attended by Ash and Abhishek Bachchan , Dutta said the former 'Miss World' made him change his genre when she finally consented to do the movie, he had been planning for 13 years.

On her part, Ash, who flew in from Mumbai after celebrating her 33rd birthday on November 1, laughed off queries as to whether she would be a contender for the Oscars in future.

Asked when he and Ash were getting married, Abhishek said, "You tell us, since you have been telling us that since the past year."

Questioned on his being branded the 'sexiest man in Asia', Bachchan junior said, "it is not true, but thank you for making me feel embarrassed."

Abhishek topped the list of the '50 Sexiest Men' in Asia in a survey by Eastern Eye, Britain's most popular Asian newspaper.

"It's shocking. Are people blind?" he had responded then.

Ash and Abhishek will also be seen together soon in Dhoom 2 , though they are not paired opposite each other in the thriller.

Kareena on a new fitness spree

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor is using her time off between movies to take up yoga, hit the gym and lose some weight, a newspaper reported.
Considered one of the most promising of a crop of young Bollywood actresses, Kapoor has never been known for being overweight.

But a daily quoted her as saying, "I want to look super sexy."

The actress is on a nine-month break from filming movies and said she wanted "a well-toned body" by the time she begins shooting two movies next year.

Kapoor, 26, says she became "fitness conscious" over the past several months when her boyfriend and fellow actor Shahid Kapur, a regular at a Mumbai gym, asked her to join him in two-hour daily workouts.

The health regime "worked wonders for me," she said.

Her recent movies were Omkara, Bollywood's version of Shakespeare's Othello, and Don, a remake of a Hindi-movie classic about a mafia boss.
