No name, no hope, no chance
Newborn baby girl thrown from Woodlands HDB block
By Teh Jen Lee
POOR little baby, how many gasps of air did you manage before your brief existence ended in the worst way imaginable - wrapped in a plastic bag and discarded like yesterday's litter out of a flat.
Not for you the comfort of nestling next to the warmth of your mummy.
Nor the joy of experiencing life, the identity of a name, the dream of a future - all those things that most of us take for granted.
What happened to make you end up with such a cruel, cruel fate?
We do not know yet, but may in time. That's the least we could wish for, to give some semblance of meaning to your all-too-brief life.
And so that you may rest in peace, little one, with the knowledge that justice has been done. That whoever did this unthinkable thing to you will pay for it.
You might not have a name, but we do not want you to be forgotten. Not when every so often a little bundle like you ends up being abandoned.
Some are lucky to be discovered in time. Others, sadly, end up like you.
Who could have done such a thing to a bundle of joy that some couples try for years to cherish?
Yes, there will be outrage over your senseless death.
Or as Mr Mah Low Low puts it: 'How can someone's heart be so black as to do something like this?'
Mr Mah is the man whom you narrowly missed as you plunge down from the 8th storey of a Woodlands HDB tower block to your death.
It happened about 12.30pm yesterday at Block 678 Woodlands Avenue 6.
You were wrapped in a yellow plastic bag and fell with a thud less than a metre from Mr Mah, 78, a retiree who had been sitting at the planter box outside Prime Supermarket.
And yet, he hardly seemed bothered by what had happened.
'People around me started saying I was lucky I wasn't hit by it, otherwise I would have died,' said Mr Mah in Cantonese.
When he opened the bag, he said he mistook your body inside for a chicken.
Miss Liew Fang Ling, 37, a salesgirl from a clothes shop nearby, said she saw Mr Mah pick up the plastic bag.
'I heard a loud sound so I came out to see. People tried to tell the old man that it was a baby's body,' she said in Mandarin.
But Mr Mah apparently didn't understand.
He said: 'My eyes are bad, I thought I saw a chicken thigh. There was a lot of blood so I couldn't see properly.'
The blood got on his hands so he put the bag down and went to wash them.
'I got some water to clean my hands. Then I had a drink at the coffee shop I usually go to,' he said.
Mr Mah lives with his youngest son in Block 715, across the road from Admiralty MRT station, which is next to Block 678.
Every day he walks around the neighbourhood to buy 4D or have lunch.
Yesterday, he continued on his daily routine until a policewoman asked him about the plastic bag. It was only then he realised he had touched you - a dead baby.

HE FELT ANGRY
The father of seven children and over 10 grandchildren was angry at the way a young life had been snuffed out so cruelly.
'I hope the police catches the culprit soon,' he said.
After being interviewed by the police and media, he went on to have lunch, polishing off a plate of rice with roasted meat.
The incident sparked a commotion among the other residents of Woodlands Avenue 6.
The Prime Supermarket branch at Block 678 was closed for a few hours when police cordoned the area where your body had landed. Hundreds stood behind police tape, speculating about who would throw away a newborn baby so callously - and why.
A man was overheard saying: 'Even animals would not do this.'
Others there included Mr S C Chua and his wife, both 41, who have been living in Block 678 for more than seven years.
'I have not heard any quarrels or anything that could have led to this happening,' said Mr Chua, who is jobless.
The police were informed about the incident at 12.35pm.
A man using the ATM at Block 678 had heard the plastic bag hit the ground, and called the police after seeing you lying motionless inside the bag.
You were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. It is not known if you were alive when you were thrown.
Police have arrested a 16-year-old girl and are still investigating your death.
Meanwhile, the people at the scene moved on with their daily lives. And who's to say that in time to come you will just be a blot in their memories, yet another baby who never got a shot at life.
Eyewitnesses can call the police hotline on 1800-255-0000.

Which flat? Who's that girl?
THOSE are the questions on the lips of neighbours on the eighth floor of Block 678 Woodlands Avenue 6, who saw a 16-year-old girl being led away by the police yesterday. She wasn't handcuffed and appeared cooperative. After questioning, the police arrested her around 7.45pm. They confirmed she is Malay.
The staff of Prime Supermarket later burnt incense near where the baby's body was found.
Police spokesman Debbie See said the teenager lives in Block 678, and the police are investigating her relationship to the baby. Madam Chua Geok Chwee, 39, who lives a few doors from the flat from which the teenager was led, was not sure who the girl is.
'I never saw anyone pregnant,' the housewife said. At first, she thought the girl could have been a maid and was later told by the immediate neighbour of the flat in question that it did not have a maid.
'The neighbour said the couple there has four children - three boys and a girl,' Madam Chua said in Mandarin this morning.
'Two are teenagers, including the daughter, but since the neighbour did not see the girl as she was taken away, she's not sure if she's the daughter.
'The neighbour said she invited the family over for Hari Raya recently but the daughter didn't look pregnant.'
Mr Tong Ngiam Peng, 50, who lives on the same floor, said he had not seen a pregnant woman entering the flat. He said: 'I didn't really observe because the neighbours rarely talk to each other. It's usually very quiet around here.'
When The New Paper knocked on the flat in question and the immediate neighbours' last night and this morning, there was no response.
The police have classified the case as infanticide, for which the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. - Tay Shi'an |

astaghfirullah...budak melayu rupanya...
kalau dikata dia masih setahun jagung tak tahu apa yg dia buat tu salah, wat abt her parents? where were they??? i dun think it's fair to blame the gal alone. parents, masyarakat sekeliling harus bertanggungjawab atas apa yg berlaku.
nilah kepincangan masyarakat kita, terlalu cetek soal agama dan moral, terlalu tertekan dek rasa malu dan inferiority complex, terlalu utamakan kepentingan diri sendiri... |

u r rite, ahysa. kadangkala masyarakat kita kuat berpegang pada kata2 ini "jgn jaga tepi kain org"...tapi ade kalanya kita kena peka dgn apa yg berlaku dikeliling kita seblom kejadian yg tidak diingini berlalu....bila masa perlu kita masuk campur, lakukanlah..
seperti kes budak 7 tahun yg kena dera hingga mati...takkan satu pun jiran tak pernah dengar budak tu menjerit kesakitan bukan satu dua hari..tapi bebulan2. sifat 'kepo' harus kena pada tempat nyer mcm kes begini...
tapi tak boleh cakap jugak eh..dapat jiran yg kepo tahap extrim....masya'allah, tuhan ajer yg tahu...nf: |

SITI LEGA PENYEBAR FITNAH DIDAKWA
- Harian Metro.
