![](http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/6536/leelwq5.jpg)
Seats for the opening ceremony of the upcoming "Hallyu Expo in Asia," which will be attended by top hallyu stars, have proven insufficient to accommodate all reporters and fans wishing to see the extravaganza.
The number of seats for the opening ceremony slated for November 29 was set at 4,000, but the organizing committee says it is considering adding more seats as large numbers of foreign fans and visitors have expressed their willingness to attend the event.
The opening ceremony, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will be hosted by Kang Byung-kyu and Yoon Son-ha and consist of two parts.
Performers will include M (Lee Min-woo), Lee Jung-hyun, Chae Yeon, SG Wannabe, Superjunior, the B-boy team Last For One, which won a B-boy competition in Germany, and others.
Throughout the 102-day expo, some 20 bands and celebrities will appear at the event, and special events featuring top hallyu stars will be held every week.
Hallyu Expo in Asia, an international exhibition of hallyu stars, TV dramas and movies, will be the first and the longest hallyu-related international event. It will run through March 10 at the Jeju Convention Center.

[HERALD INTERVIEW]
Lee Byung-hun eyes Hollywood
Given that Lee Byung-hun is one of the top-rated Korean Wave stars, it comes as no surprise that he is interested in grabbing a role for a Hollywood movie. The question is when and how he pulls it off.
"Some news media reported that I already entered Hollywood, but it's not true at all," Lee said in an interview. "Our agents are arranging meetings with Hollywood people, but I haven't found a role I could take."
Lee said he has indeed met with some of the top officials at famous studios such as Fox and Universal and got some proposals, but found the proposed roles not suitable for his image.
"I don't want to debut as another Asian actor who does some martial art. I want to play an independent role on an equal footing with other American actors in a Hollywood film," he said.
![](http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/7822/200611190009va3.gif)
Lee Byung-hun [Yang Sung-jin/The Korea Herald]
Lee received two casting proposals to play Asia's "James Bond," a main supporting role to top Hollywood actors, but he has not opted for such roles yet. The main reason was that he did not want to play a bad guy in a Hollywood film. "I guess a sense of pride for my Asian fans was also at work when I rejected such roles," he said. Such casting meetings are usually held in the United States, and he said American filmmakers are showing great interest toward Korean actors and directors.
"Nobody knows who will be the first to enter Hollywood. It could be Jun Ji-hyun, or other famous Korean directors. What's certain is that we are now near the starting line," he said.
Though a Hollywood debut is certainly important, Lee's focus is now placed on promoting "Once in a Summer," a melodrama directed by Jo Geun-shik. In the film, Lee plays an elderly professor tracking down an old lover, played by Su Ae ("Wedding Campaign", "A Family").
"This is the first time that I'm acting as an old man in my entire career," Lee said. The movie portrays a young college student in 1969, and how he encounters his love in a rural area. The story itself unfolds as the man, now in his 60s, tries to track down his love in a flashback technique.
"Director Jo was considering casting another actor to play the elderly professor, but I insisted I had to do the role because I thought that would be more natural," he said.
Special makeup was tested for Lee, and the result turned out to be far from natural. "We hurriedly set up a special makeup test, and the final result was a strange, old guy - someone in a mystery thriller film," he said, laughing.
Instead of special makeup, director Jo asked Lee to use conventional makeup, which still took about two and a half hours to finish. "I didn't realize how difficult it was to play an elderly man, or me in my 60s," he said. "I'm stuck between the college student in his 20s and the professor in his 60s, because I belong to neither group," the 36-year-old actor said.
Lee said he is aware that more people in Korea and elsewhere are now paying attention to him, but he doesn't feel comfortable categorizing himself as a Korean Wave star.
"Frankly, I don't know anything about the qualifications for becoming a Korean Wave star, and I'm trying not to categorize myself. What I know is that more people know me and watch my films. I think that's good, but I also feel greater responsibility," he said.
Lee said such public attention sometimes puts enormous pressure on him, but he tries to return to his own identity. "Now that many people are watching me, do I have to be a morally perfect man? I don't think so. I believe such an attitude means a rigid way of thinking, and I don't like it as an actor. I don't want to narrow the scope of my behavior. I want to be free," he said.

Hallyu Stars Boost Country's Tourism Industry
![](http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/2521/leeloy9.jpg)
Hallyu stars Lee Byung-heon, Bae Yong-jun, Song Seung-heon and Kim Rae-won have contributed greatly to boosting the country's tourism industry.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism says that the number of Japanese tourists in the first half of the year dropped 4.5 percent due to the weakened Japanese currency, but has been on the rise in the second half of the year following the comebacks of several top hallyu stars.
Forty-five buses carrying Japanese tourists were lined up at an army checkpoint on November 15 when actor Song Seung-heon was discharged from the military, as some 700 Japanese fans visited Korea to see Song. On November 18 and 19, some 5000 Japanese fans attended Song's fan meetings in Seoul.
Actor Kim Rae-won held a special premiere of his upcoming movie "Sunflower" and a fan meeting for some 400 Japanese fans November 20 in downtown Seoul.
Some 2000 foreign fans flocked to the special premiere of a new movie starring Lee Byung-heon on November 21.
More than 5000 Japanese tourists are expected to visit Jeju Island November 29 to attend the opening ceremony of the Hallyu Expo, which will run through March next year.
The number of Japanese tourists who have visited or will visit Korea to see Song Seung-heon, Lee Byung-heon, Kim Rae-won and Bae Yong-jun has surpassed 13,000 this year, more than half of the 21,000 Japanese tourists recorded in November last year.
Hallyu stars are thus playing a pivotal role in attracting foreign tourists to Korea, helping the struggling tourism industry to stay afloat.

[MBC to Abolish Year-End Music Awards]
2006-11-14
By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter
Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has decided to discontinue a year-end music award ceremony, according to a local online news outlet.
``We抳e decided to shut down the program two or three months ago, as the music awards have sparked controversy over fairness,拻 Choi Young-guen, director of the entertainment division of the broadcaster, said in a telephone interview with My Daily.
The decision also came as a growing number of the year-end awards have sprung up in major broadcasters including SBS and KBS and it is getting difficult to differentiate between awards.
``It is a pity to abolish the music awards program for us because we have given the awards since the establishment of the MBC radio station. But to cope with changes in our time, we have decided to temporarily close it,拻 he said.
Various factors such as album charts, contributions to TV shows in each channel and votes from fans are considered in the selection of the winners at music awards ceremonies.
But the awards have failed to meet the expectations of viewers who have fast changing tastes as there is no consistency in the nomination of singers for the awards, prompting many fans to complain about fairness.
MBC has given the awards to 10 singers and pop groups. But many pop stars are finding it hard to attend the many ceremonies organized by major broadcasters.
Last year, SG Wannabe provoked controversy by refusing to attend the MBC Music Awards ceremony.
However, MBC will continue to hold other year-end awards ceremonies for the best actors and actresses.

Young Korean actor Choi Si-won has shown his potential to become the next-generation Korean star to lead the Korean Wave, or Korean pop culture craze, in Asia. The actor was welcomed by his fans everywhere he went in China to promote his debut film "Battle of Wits," which was jointly produced by Korea, China and Japan.
The promotion was held in four Chinese cities--Beijing on Nov. 16, Shanghai on Nov. 17, Shenzen on Nov. 18 and Hong Kong on Nov. 19 and 20--with director Chi Leung 'Jacob' Cheung and other stars who starred in the movie, including Ahn Sung-kee and Andy Lau, attending.
The Chinese press also showed great interest in the new Korean star. The Beijing Daily News reported in its Nov. 17 edition that when Choi appeared at the preview, a crowd of fans cheered and shouted in joy. Hong Kong抯 Mingpao News on Nov. 20 cited Lau, who praised Choi for his good personality.

First Love
NOVEMBER 23, 2006 06:49
![](http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/79/rbh2006112373588dt8.jpg)
"Once In a Summer" is shaping up to be the love story of the year.
"I'm just thankful. It's an archetypal answer, but... could I say anything else? I came to the hotel late from drinking in Busan, and my fans were still waiting for me."
He lives in a house in Gyeonggi-do, and a Japanese woman bought the house next to his. When men see that type of fan, they usually say, "I wonder if their husbands don't say anything." This reporter asked what he would do if his future wife did the same thing with another actor. He immediately answers, "I would feel bad." He is also a typical Korean man.
The movie starts with a college professor Seok-yeong (Lee Byeong-heon) searching for his past love Jeong-in (Su Ae) on a TV show program. They first met when Seok-yeong went to the countryside to do volunteer work as a college student. However, due to the agonies of the times, they broke up.
In the movie, Lee Byeong-heon plays the character's early twenties and sixties. "It's a serious movie, and I was worried that my disguise as a sixty year old man might look funny."
The movie put a lot of care into location, costumes and props to reproduce the year 1969. The movie may be a traditional mellow story, but the friend roles Oh Dal-su, TV station PD Yu Hae-jin and other comic supporting actors bring laughter onto the screen.
"In the movie, it all seems like one town, but in reality, we went around Gyeongsang-do, Chungcheong-do and Jeolla-do to shoot the scenes. But I was with Oh Dal-su so much that people thought it was a mellow movie between Oh and I."
Every word he says, he laughs.
A mellow fantasy film-
The original name of the movie was 'Summer Story.'
"The producers put out a 500,000 won award for a new name, saying they would change the name. The one I put out got chosen, but I only got 100,000 won. They say there were five people in total who came up with this name."
On site, he is famous as an "actor tormenting director," who continuously gives his ideas to the director. The scenario of "Once in a summer, which was comparatively passive, was reborn through Lee's ideas. Thanks to his input, scenes such as getting off a bicycle to pull his pants out after he gets a wedgy, or looking at Su Ae listening to music coming from the hardware store, are included.
In the movie, Seok-yeong loves only Jeong-in for his whole life. Would it be possible to love one person an entire lifetime? "Rather than loving the same woman for a lifetime, there was a woman in his life when he was young, and afterwards he didn't feel any emotions that could be called love. It is a difficult thing, but because that kind of love is difficult, mellow movies must give the audience a fantasy."
We asked him vaguely, "What is love?" He didn't answer. After looking out the window at a faraway place, he opened his mouth. "Maybe it抯 the point when one throws their ego away." As I tried to say it was a fine answer, he smiles again. What am I to do, if he keeps smiling in front of me like that?

[Rejected Songs That Became Mega Hits]
![](http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/8687/jongfu0.jpg)
In an epsiode of "Behind the Curtain", composer Joo Young Hun revealed that some songs pass different singers before achieving success.
"Adorable", one of the most popular songs of Kim Jong Guk, was actually rejected by 6 other singers before arriving at the hands of Kim Jong Guk. This revelation by the composer in a television program surprised everyone because nobody had imagined that this very popular song had been rejected so many times. Because of this song, Kim Jong Guk ranked first place for several weeks in charts.
Another example of a song which found a good owner was "Festival". It is Uhm Jung Hwa's song which was originally composed for Country Kko Kko. However, the duo refused to accept the song saying that it was not their type of song. Uhm Jung Hwa actually also did not like the song but her manager insisted her to sing it. Finally, she accepted it and because of this lucky decision, she ranked number 1 in charts.

[A New Baby V.O.X]
![](http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/151/voxjpd2.jpg)
A new female group like Baby V.O.X will debut in the Korean pop music world.
Baby V.O.X. and Fin K.L. were one of the most popular female groups during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
But the group disbanded in 2004. The label that once managed the female group is now looking for new singers to form a new girl band like Baby V.O.X.
Initially, the new group was planned to keep the name Baby V.O.X but it was finally decided that they will have a new name.
The label has requested the public to share some ideas on what name the new group will have. If you also have ideas, you can propose them at www.drmusic.co.kr. If your suggested name gets chosen, you will have the chance to spend four days with the new group in Thailand.

"Rain will be busy preparing for his world tour next month that it would be difficult for the singer to attend year-end awards", revealed a JYP official on November 14.
Rain will not be attending this year's first event, Mnet KMTV "music Festival" ceremonies. Rain will end his 4th album activities this November and will start preparations for his world tour.
"Rain will tour for 6 months and must save his physical strength. Rain will be having his concert in Las Vegas in December that it will be impossible for him to attend year-end awards", JYP official expressed.
On December 15 and 16, Rain will have his Seoul performances. He will be holding 35 concerts in 12 countries in 6 months.
After the Seoul performances, Rain will immediately fly to America for choreography practices.
Se7en and Rain, big stars of Korean music, not attending year-end awards will definitely be a great loss in year-end awards.
Year-end awards are criticized because they are turning likely "useless" because of Internet popularity polls that make awards a "click battle".
Lee Hyo-ri will not attend year-end awards and even "Asia's star" BoA, who did not release a Korean album this year, has no obligations to attend the awards.
Top stars not attending year-end awards are already becoming a worry.

[The Charm Of Korean Singers]

In your opinion, what makes Japanese girls go crazy over Korean singers? What are their secrets for their success in the archipelago?
Oricon, a Japanese company which provides music industry information, recently asked those questions. The reasons behind this phenomenon are as follows:
1. Korean singers are more masculine than the Japanese. They are more seductive and their music is more powerful and more dynamic.
2. They interact with their fans more. The Korean singers often organize meetings with their Japanese fans. According to Oricon, this is not the case with Japanese singers.
3. The Korean singers also star in films and television series to show that they are not only good in singing but also in acting.
According to Oricon, these 3 elements make Korean singers succeed in the Japanese music market.

With short hair and jeans instead of a suit, Daniel Henney looks relaxed and approachable. The man who in just two dramas -- "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" and "Spring Waltz" -- captured the hearts of millions of Korean women is now promoting his first feature film, "Seducing Mr. Robin," which is released on Dec.7. The Chosun Ilbo spoke to the 28-year old.
Don't you think that you are playing on women's fantasies a little too much? In this movie, your character is a Harvard graduate and CEO of a foreign company.
"It's a misunderstanding. Having read the screenplay, I thought he was such an ass. Too cold and stubborn. Later in the movie, a little human touch is added to the character, but the part is different than my previous roles, which were more warm-hearted."
Your fans praise your gentleness and sweetness, best represented in your smile.
"Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, everybody has two sides: good and bad. I showed my true self through Henry in 慚y Name is Kim Sam-soon |
