Don抰 Hesitate To Seek Employment Overseas
By Za'im Zaini & Azrol Azmi

Bandar Seri Begawan - Unemployment amongst graduates continues to exist in this country despite the various efforts undertaken by the government and-the private sector to overcome the problem, said HRH Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office in his sabda at the 16th Institute Technology Brunei Convocation yesterday at the International Conference Centre, Berakas.

"In responding to this challenge, graduates should also be prepared to seize readily available opportunities even though this may require leaving the country to seek employment. This is one of the valuable opportunities to obtain experience at an international level that will enable them to join in the development of the nation when they return," said the Crown Prince.
HRH told the graduates that they should possess skills and knowledge, initiative, practical training, good communication skills and proficiency in the English language, in addition to the training gained from higher learning institution.

"These are some of the traits that should be addressed in order to make graduates more marketable in taking up more challenging jobs at an international level.

"I would also like to urge stakeholders in the country to continue to pursue efforts to ensure that any education programmes or courses that are to be offered, should be more focused towards areas or occupations in sectors which require them, in order to prevent graduates from mismatching their skills or acquiring irrelevant skills, which is one of the root causes of graduate unemployment," said the Crown Prince.

The initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Education in developing the "Strategic Planning for the Ministry of Education 2007 to 2011" is an important effort in creating guidelines for all educational institutions to determine the directions taken by their respective educational development plans.

"I would also like to stress the importance of quality of teaching, which represents a vital factor in producing a workforce with not only academic excellence but also the capabilities and skills as well as the confidence to engage the realm of entrepreneurship.

"Educators should strive to enhance their knowledge and acquire the latest or up-to-date knowledge. As the extent of knowledge of educators increases, there will be a corresponding knock on effect to the future accomplishments of their students," said HRH.

"They are expected to be able to turn out quality students capable of developing the nation and as leaders through the inculcation of positive and pious values in their students as required by the country, nation and religion. "Inculcating excellence in ethics and work culture, productivity and discipline are amongst the traits that should be instilled in graduates who are about to become part of the workforce.

"This represents a major challenge in creating a generation possessing firm self esteem and great patriotism that adhere to the teachings of our religion and clear moral values," said the Crown Prince.

"The teachers themselves are responsible for upholding the good name of the teaching profession so that it will always be respected for its responsibility in the development of future generations.

"I would like to remind all graduates to constantly aspire to becoming citizens with _a high sense of commitment, rubbing shoulders to work together in developing the nation towards a model society with pure values that distance themselves from any negative elements which threaten the well being of our communities and nationhood," HRH told the graduates.

The Crown Prince also urged graduates to use the diplomas as a platform towards a further and more extensive acquisition of accurate and comprehensive knowledge. HRH told them not to be complacent with what they have achieved and instead, use their resolve and determination to strive for excellence in their skills.

Institute Technology Brunei has also proven that ITB remains relevant in the eyes of the community by producing skilled graduates capable of supporting the nation towards the continued raising of the quality of life as well as economic development, HRH added.

"I have been made to understand that based on the figures of student applications to ITB from the year 2000 to the current year the interest among youths has increased threefold. This is a direct indication of the confidence of this country's youths in the quality of education available and the rising popularity of courses offered.

"To meet the needs of this development, His Majesty's Government through the Ministry of Education has embarked on efforts to raise ITB's capacity to cater for the increase in student intakes. Such efforts should be bolstered to increase the capacity of ITB in meeting the needs of future increases in student intake.

"The support and assistance provided by the government is specifically meant to enable graduates to further their studies to a higher level, thereby becoming assets that will nurture a nation of knowledge and skills that will contribute to and serve the country. "It is therefore the responsibility of graduates to prove to the community they are products of quality and responsibility, possessing great competitiveness and resilience, whilst being knowledgeable, highly skilled and dedicated," the Crown Prince reminded the graduates.

The achievements of ITB graduates as a whole indicate that they have been successful in entering the nation's employment market in the public and private sectors whilst a number of them have succeeded in furthering their studies at a higher level, said the Crown Prince and added that these exemplary achievements will ensure that more youths will be attracted to the prospect of enrolling into the courses offered at this institute.

"Graduates should also be reminded that they should not squander the opportunities offered whether from the public or private sector. Such opportunities should be fully utilised in acquiring to the fullest extent, experience, knowledge and skills, as well as giving full attention and commitment to raising the potential of their respective careers, the Crown Prince said. -- Courtesy

Banar tu holmes, IT are and will be a big thing in 10 years time. But will the Government absorb all our IT experts. I do not think so. I wud rather see my children go for those qualifications yg guarantee dapat keraja arah Kerajaan such as Doctors and Educationists. And furthermore Doctors and Teachers will always be on demand!

This is not a bad idea really. Currently there are a few Bruneians who opted to work in UK, Australia, etc. They are earning good money. Even some of our students who are under Brunei Government Scholarships, after completing their studies has chosen to work overseas, and these students are fulfilling their agreement with the Government. As we all know, it is just impossible for the Brunei Government to absorb everybody!

It all depends dimana ia kan minta keraja, Brunei Government kah or private sectors. Kalau Brunei Government, not that easy now since org kitani sendiri pun byk yg balum keraja. Kalau private sectors maybe ada but has to apply to the specific company. And there are labour and immigration laws to follow.

Ada sudah org betanya ari atu, liat this thread -

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah

Prince Jefri's Lawsuit In US Dismissed

New York - A federal judge in New York has dismissed a lawsuit of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah against Britain-based husband-and-wife legal advisers that the Prince claimed conned him and his companies out of millions of dollars.

In an opinion Friday, US District Judge Lewis A Kaplan dismissed a federal racketeering claim against Faith Zairian and Thomas William Derbyshire brought by Prince Jefri and a group, of companies, of which he is beneficial owner. The judge also denied a request by Prince Jefri to file an amended complaint in the matter.

Shortly after Judge Kaplan issued his ruling, Prince Jefri's lawyers filed a lawsuit against the couple in New York State Supreme Court on Friday, said Mark A Cymrot, the couple's lawyer.

"(Judge Kaplan's decision) confirms that the Derbyshires are not racketeers," Cymrot said Monday. "It reduces the dispute to a normal commercial dispute, for which we think there's no merit."

Brian Socolow, a lawyer for Prince Jefri, said Monday that they disagree with Judge Kaplan's findings in the federal case and are "examining our options". He said the Prince has separately filed a lawsuit in New York state court asserting the same state law claims as the prior federal lawsuit.

In his lawsuit, Prince Jefri had alleged the couple, who began acting as his legal advisers in 2004, breached their fiduciary duties through a series of fraudulent real-estate transactions in the United States and misuse of corporate credit cards.

The complaint had sought the set-aside of the real-estate transactions, damages and the return of millions of dollars in legal fees. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Rise In Complaints On Deviant Activities
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei has seen a rise in the number of complaints relating to "Aqidah" or contradictions of Islamic creed and belief over the past years.

But the increase is not due to the prevalence of such issues in the Sultanate but merely due to more people lodging reports as a result of an increasing awareness after enriching themselves through religious talks and Friday sermons, the spokesperson of the Aqidah Control Section of the Ministry of Religious Affairs told the Bulletin.

Complaints were up from 16 in 2002 to 38 in 2004 and 55 last year (2006), statistics from the Section revealed. Asked about the recent raid conducted by the Aqidah Control Section on a suspected "bomoh" activity performing what was called as "menarik duit" or claiming to be able to make money out of leaves, he said that the case is still under investigation.

"Immediately after the raid was conducted, `Bon Hadir' or a bond was issued for them (those present at the event) to give explanation on the activity. They will he charged in the Syarie court if they are found guilty. If the element for prosecution is inadequate, an administrative religious consultation will be conducted or should there be an immigration violation, it will be referred to the department concerned," he said.

Last Thursday, the Bulletin ran a news story of a group of 30 people, in the midst of learning the `trick' to turn leaves into money, that was taken by surprise when a posse of officials from the Royal Brunei Police Force from Tutong District, Internal Security Department, Law Enforcement Section of the Department of Immigration and National Registration and Aqidah Control Section of Syariah Affairs Department gate-crashed into the 憇ecret' congregation in Tutong District.

The congregants were all dressed in black and were allegedly being duped by a leader, known as "Ayahanda Putera", suspected to be involved in the "menarik duit" activity. Meanwhile, a Malay tabloid in Malaysia last week reported that certain people with a mission to get rich quick, were willing to ignore the religion by engaging in similar "Tank Duit" which includes using materials derived from hog, reading of `Mentera' or magic charm and "Jampi Serapah" or magic spell that are against the Islamic teachings. The Aqidah Control Section spokesperson also told the Bulletin that during the raid in Tutong District, some of the congregants were just curious to know whether the 'bomoh' was able to make money out of leaves.

The Aqidah Control Section under the Syariah Affairs Department plays a crucial role in enforcing Islamic Religious Council Act, Chapter 77, especially those relating to matters against the 'Aqidah' or belief, to carry out investigations on activities that are against the `Agidah', as well as to analyse issues relating to it and to enhance public awareness on any deviant activities that could destabilise the Islamic belief of Muslims in this country.

The spokesperson welcomed tip offs on any suspected activities, which are against the Islamic teachings. The department can be reached through its Hotline 8980055 or 8980311 or 2221422 (during office hours). -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Britain To Have Strong Presence At BRIDEX
By Sonia K

Bandar Seri Begawan - The United Kingdom, through its Ministry of Defence, will be offering its full support to the inaugural Brunei International Defence Exhibition (BRIDEX), and will be represented by its Defence Export Service Organisation (DESO) at the exhibition.

DESO will have a stand area dedicated to promoting UK industry and a wide range of capabilities in use by the British Armed Forces.

A press release from DESO stated the official delegation will be led by Mr Alan Garwood, Head of Defence Export Services, who will be participating in the associated forum, as well as holding bilateral discussions with other delegations throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The DESO presence will be supported by officers from HMS Monmouth, a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, which will be visiting Brunei at the time of the exhibition. The ship's helicopter, a Merlin EH 101, will form a static display outside the main entrance to the International Convention Centre.

Pilots, navigators and ground crew for the aircraft will be available to brief exhibition attendees on the specific capabilities of this multi-role versatile helicopter, it said.

In addition, there will be 12 UK defence companies displaying their equipment and services at the exhibition. Their specialities vary from the manufacture of platform equipment to provision of training services.

This large presence from UK industry clearly demonstrates the ongoing attractiveness of the defence market in this region.

The release stated that DESO is looking forward to BRIDEX to further strengthen the warm bilateral ties between the UK Ministry of Defence and its counterpart in Brunei.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
