KLOSE SCORE THE 2ND GOAL FOR BAYERN
Bayern beat Wolfsburg to reach final
Germany striker Miroslav Klose scored his 20th goal for Bayern Munich to book his side's place in next month's German Cup final after Wednesday night's 2-0 semi-final win over VfL Wolfsburg.
Since his switch to Munich from Werder Bremen last summer, Klose now has ten Bundesliga goals to his name, plus five in both the UEFA Cup and German Cup - but still lags behind top-scorer Luca Toni who has 24 goals for Bayern this season.
Klose, 29, added Bayern's second from close-range in the 66th minute after French midfielder Franck Ribery had broken the dead-lock on the hour mark to put Bayern just one win away from lifting the cup for the 14th time. The top scorer at the 2006 World Cup, Klose is set to shine in June's Euro 2008 tournament after showing his poachers instinct to book Bayern's final spot against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday April 19 in Berlin.
The win was good news for Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld as his side bounced back after their UEFA Cup defeat by Anderlecht the week before and the humiliation of the 2-0 league defeat at strugglers Energie Cottbus last weekend. There were changes after the debacle in Cottbus with Italian World Cup winner Toni rested and Germany striker Lukas Podolski given his chance up front alongside Klose up front.
Bayern got off to a bright start as early as the second minute when Ribery found himself behind the Wolfsburg defence, but his header trickled wide. Both Klose and Podolski squandered chances early on, but Ribery got the all important break-through just before the hour mark.
With the Wolfsburg defence closing in, Klose slid a pass to Ribery who unleashed his shot and ricocheted off the legs off goalkeeper Diego Benaglio into the back of the net. And Klose added the second on 66 minutes when he followed up Marcell Jansen's shot and stabbed the ball home for his 20th goal for Bayern in all competitions. |

Bayern Klose the deal as Toni seals win over Bayer
BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich's Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni struck twice as the German giants went seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win over title rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern took an early lead on 17 minutes as Germany forward Miroslav Klose passed back into the five-yard box for Toni to rifle home his 15th league goal of the season.
And Toni struck again on 59 minutes to put the game beyond doubt when he headed home defender Philipp Lahm's spectacular cross to put him on 26 goals for the season in all competitions.
The Italian is now the league's top scorer with 16 goals while between them Klose and Toni have hit 46 goals for Bayern since they both moved to Munich last summer.
Bayer hit a late consolation goal through Russian striker Dmitriy Bulykin and the result means Toni is now the league's top scorer with 16 goals.
The defeat leaves Bayer Leverkusen third in the table - nine points behind Bayern - and in danger os slipping back to fourth if Werder Bremen win at strugglers Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.
Second-placed Hamburg are now seven points behind Bayern after they slipped to a 1-1 draw with VfL Wolfsburg.
Defender Bastian Reinhardt headed home a Piotr Trochowski pass on 14 minutes to put Hamburg ahead, but Wolfsburg striker Danijel Ljuboja equalised in the second-half to share the points.
Defending champions VfB Stuttgart are on the verge of breaking into the top five - and places in Europe next season - as they beat Hansa Rostock 4-1.
Mexican midfielder Pavel Pardo opened the scoring with a second-half penalty before Brazilian striker Cacau put Stuttgart 2-0 ahead.
Rostock pulled a goal back as striker Mario Gomez turned the ball into his own net before making amends with a goal of his own as midfielder Yildiray Bastuerk added the fourth.
German Cup finalists Borussia Dortmund shared a point in their battle to stay away from the relegation zone when they drew 1-1 with mid-table Karslruhe.
Croatian striker Mladen Petric's 12th league goal of the season to put Dortmund ahead before Sebastian Freis equalised.
And mid-table Hanover were held 1-1 by bottom side Duisburg.
On Thursday night Eintracht Frankfurt picked up a 2-1 win over Energie Cottbus, while fifth placed Schalke 04 take on mid-table Hertha Berlin at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. |
