Dari last two months kawan2 aku ada borak2 jugak....
Ada agensi kat depan Mesjid Kassim, tingkat dua atas kedai renovation, bleh carikkan keja kat Dubai or mana2 tempat Arab la....
Nak isi form, kena bayar la apa la, tapi kalo dapat keja, pegi keja kat Arab sana, gaji US$ sey..Keja kontrak je. Then aku dengar a few of my frens semua cam interested je... tapi aku tak ah, Dubai cam jauh je, aku pulak tak strong willed, mau kang keja seminggu nak resign lak..

Then smalam sokkabar New Paper keluar pasal this same agency, dari tulisan New Paper, cam nak tunjukkan this agensi ni macam banyak cakap bohong ngan reporter New Paper masa interview. Tapi to each his own la, as long as agensi ni dapat tolong sapa2 nak keja kat Dubai, tu yang penting.

She offers 'top dollar' jobs in the Middle East but...
After China and India, making money in the Middle East appears to be the next big thing. But can you get high-paying jobs there easily? We investigate
By Seto Nu-wen

June 22, 2005

YOU want a job? She'll get you one in the Middle East. And you'll get top dollar for it too.

Madam Fathelah said she has many jobs to offer because of the variety of projects her company is involved in. -- CHOO CHWEE HUA
Madam Siti Fathelah Zohra Abdul Majid Al-Sultan claims to have various opportunities in everything from theme parks to a Balinese-style restaurant lined up in Dubai. She needs people to work for her fast.

From her district 15 office, she promises numerous people who turn up at her office monthly salaries of thousands of US dollars.

She speaks of jobs in construction, retail and at the theme parks.

Madam Fathelah, a slim, well-dressed 45-year-old, is confident and eloquent.

Her company - The Middle East Council & Chamber of Commerce (MECCC) started in August last year - has recruited more than 30 Singaporeans to work in big construction projects in the United Arab Emirates, she says.

'MANY JOBS ON OFFER'

'We seek out projects there and seek out investors for them. Then we provide them with project management services, such as construction and recruitment,' she explained.

'When the project is completed, we will take care of the day-to-day operations.'

Madam Fathelah said she has many jobs to offer because of the variety of projects.

'In Sharjah, which is about 10 minutes from Dubai, we have five-star restaurants, a gym, an indoor theme park, a health clinic and a security facility,' she said.

'In August, we're starting a rifle range in Dubai. We also have a petrochemical project in Qatar.'

She even offered to fly this reporter to Dubai to see the projects.

MECCC, she claims, pays well. A simple secretarial job, for example, can pay up to US$3,000 ($5,000) a month.

'We have good investors there who are willing to put in their money,' she said.

'They like Singaporean workers because their quality of work and productivity is good.'

The New Paper visited MECCC's office on Changi Road to check it out.

We were told by a young woman we had to pay $20 for an application form and a passport-sized photo.

Suitable applicants, she said, have to attend an interview and if a vacancy is found, they must pay $350 for a medical check-up to apply for a UAE work visa.

Madam Fathelah said the $350 fee was to cover medical check-ups, both there and here.

She said it is not refundable because some applicants 'change their minds' after the check-up and demand their money back.

She said workers get 'a minimum one-year contract and fully-furnished accommodation'.

'We also cover their air fare and meals,' she said.

Madam Fathelah said MECCC makes profits by getting a percentage of the project's cost. Each project could be worth millions, she said, but declined to give exact figures.

'We get paid when the project is completed. Before that, the investors give us an advance for our workers to travel there and stay,' she explained.

She said she does not liaise with embassies or government agencies in Dubai as she has her own contacts.

But she said she works closely with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce.

Madam Fathelah said she has about 30-odd Singaporeans in Dubai and Qatar, mostly in construction.

When The New Paper interviewed her at the void deck of her home in Simei on Friday, she said she had just returned from a trip to Dubai.

'HAS LAW DEGREE'

She said she is the sole owner of MECCC and that she has 12 heads of department who handle their own teams, specialising in areas such as security or marketing.

Two of them - Mr Mohd Aidzil Maarof and Mr Rohaimi, also known as Azmi - were at the interview but declined to be photographed.

Madam Fathelah said she is Singaporean but has relatives in Jeddah.

She claimed that she has a UK law degree and used to work in the US, but declined to name her former American employer.

She said she started MECCC after attending a business seminar in July last year. 'There were people from chambers of commerce from many Middle-East countries, like Qatar and Oman,' she said.

'They had a lot of business opportunities to offer. Basically, I found gold even if I had to dig.'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The claims

WHAT MADAM FATHELAH SAYS:

She has big projects and construction works going on in Dubai.

WHAT TNP'S CHECKS SHOW:

A Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry spokesman told The New Paper it has no record of this company.

Likewise, a UAE embassy spokesman here also said they had not heard of MECCC.

WHAT MADAM FATHELAH SAYS:

Successful applicants have to pay $350 for a medical check-up here to apply for their work permit in the UAE.

WHAT TNP'S CHECKS SHOW:

The UAE embassy here says it does not process work permits for Singaporeans going there to work and that it is done only in Dubai.

The Singapore consulate in Dubai's representative, Ms Priscilla Browne, added that the $350 medical check-up fee is 'not the normal practice'.

'In the UAE, the company is financially responsible for all medical check-ups for processing of visas and this is only done once the employee has entered Dubai,' she said in an e-mail reply.

'No medical check-ups are acceptable which are done outside the UAE.'

She added that the cost of this medical check-up in the UAE is 350 UAE dirhams ($160).

A spokesman for the United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Labour also said the same thing.

WHAT MADAM FATHELAH SAYS:

MECCC's website lists six people as its exco committee.

WHAT TNP'S CHECKS SHOW:

Mr Mohamed Abdullah, who is listed as project director of the company, said Madam Fathelah had approached him about a construction project in Bahrain in November last year.

'She asked me for some help getting contractors from Malaysia so I just put her in touch with some contractors I knew,' said the manager of logistics company Raya Freight Singapore.

He said he did not know anything further about the project.

Another committee member who declined to be named said he was not even aware he was listed until a friend told him about it.

Sorry, can't show you...

BIG projects, massive construction works.

But Madam Fathelah declined to show us any evidence to support her claims.

She was reluctant to show us her contracts, saying that they were 'confidential' and that we would be 'infringing'.

She also refused to give us the phone numbers and names of her partners in Dubai, saying she didn't want us to contact them.

During the interview, she offered to show us photographs of the projects. But the day after, she changed her mind.

(See report at left for the various checks.)

While her Middle East projects sound grand, the MECCC's set-up here is less grand.

The office is located on the second floor of a run-down shophouse at Changi Road. It even shares the same premises with a tour agency.

Inside, the office is sparsely-furnished with temporary partitions.

Except for plastic gold numbers bearing the unit number, there was no sign with the company name outside.

There were only printed sheets of A4 paper with instructions about travel arrangements.

Likewise, MECCC's website appears basic and several of the links do not work.

It also lists six people on its executive committee.

A Registry of Companies and Business check showed that Madam Fathelah used to own and manage five companies which are now inactive.

FIVE COMPANIES

They are Baitul Muqaddis Centre, Fathelah Abdul Majid Consultancy & Management Services, Dela Majid Consultant Services, DM Networking Communication & Services and Della's Cafe.

Madam Fathelah said she has encountered scepticism about her company.

The doubt is misplaced, she said, posing this question: 'What do I gain from collecting $350 from, say, 30 applicants? That is only about $10,000. It's not much.'
