What's top most on the minds of newlyweds Gleen Ong and Jamie Yeo?

IT was the biggest day of their lives.

But for radio deejays Glenn Ong and Jamie Yeo, the Singapore Idol was not far off from their minds.

The pair were married yesterday afternoon in an intimate ceremony at the New Creation Church at Suntec City, in front of some 25 close friends and family.

But when asked what was the first thing they wanted to do as man and wife, the answer was simultaneous.

'Vote for our favourite Singapore Idol.'

Their choice - Taufik Batisah.

Said 34-year-old Glenn, who was dressed in a white linen suit: 'They're both nice boys, but we're simply voting based on who we think has the best vocal ability.'

But Idol fever didn't steal the attention from the sexy and stylish 27-year-old bride.

Dressed in an ivory off-shoulder mini-dress, and ivory boots with Swarovski crystals, Jamie was all smiles throughout the ceremony.

The couple's clothes and jewellery, designed by Jit from Silver Lining Bridal Couture, were sponsored.

Jamie wasn't sure how much her dress cost, but said her boots cost close to $400.

And typical of the playful pair, the ceremony had its light moments.

When Pastor Joshua Lee asked if they were both there on their own free choice to be man and wife, they burst into laughter.

And throughout the ceremony, Glenn looked mischievously at his bride, stifling a grin.

When Pastor Lee asked each of them to say a few words about the other, a guest shouted, in jest: 'I dedicate this song to Jamie. Stay cool and funky always!'

That's when Glenn grew serious.

Facing his bride and holding her hands, he said: 'I think you could have had any man but you picked me and every day, I thank God for giving you to me because you've been a constant source of inspiration... You've made me a better person.'

In response, Jamie said he was a 'blessing' in her life and the most 'wonderful man'.

Among the guests were radio personalities Rod Monteiro, Mark 'The Flying Dutchman' van Cuylenberg, and Bernard Lim.

The newly-weds bought a condominium in the east more than a month ago and will start living there when it's ready in two years' time.

In the meantime, Jamie has moved into Glenn's rented apartment in Bukit Timah.

Said Jamie: 'I'll just have to get used to his dirty habits like lying on the bed before taking a shower.'

Glenn joked: 'Well, now that we're married, it's going to get 10 times worse!'

The couple won't be going for their honeymoon yet, saving it for after their wedding bash next year.

The church ceremony will take place on Nov 12 next year at the New Creation Church.

Said Jamie: 'I want my Jack Russell, Fudge, to walk down the aisle with me too. Probably dressed in a cute tuxedo as well!'

Girl, 13, pregnant, her dad demands DNA tests

SHE was 13 years old and pregnant. But nobody knew who the father was.

The girl's father was obviously angry and demanded she have an abortion.

He also wanted a DNA test to be carried out on the foetus.

Finally, the girl blurted out the truth.

She had had sex with four men the previous year, all in the space of two months, reported Apple Daily, Taiwan.

There were more shocks awaiting the girl's father.

When the father asked for names, the girl named only one person - her neighbour a Mr Chen.

But the results of the DNA test did not match that of Mr Chen's.

CLASSMATE'S UNCLE

Then the girl revealed that she had had sex with the uncle of a classmate, whose surname is Su.

She often went to the classmate's house to do homework.

The foetus's DNA did not match this man's DNA either.

Finally, the girl revealed that she had slept with Miss Su's father as well.

She had also had sex with the father of another classmate, Miss Li.

The foetus' DNA matched that of Mr Li.

The Su men were charged by a Taipei court for statutory rape and jailed.

The father has been sentenced to jail for four years and four months. The uncle gets three years and three months.

The other two cases are still pending.

The teenager from Taipei was found to be pregnant in January last year.

The four men claimed that the girl came to them willingly and that they had not forced her to have sex with them.

The girl, however, told the court: 'My classmates had told me to have sex with the men.'

When she was cross-examined, she then admitted that she had sex with the men willingly.

Their parents met at last... at the mortuary

MADAM Tan Swee Ngo and her husband had looked forward to meeting the parents of their son's girlfriend.

Sadly, when they finally did, it was at the mortuary, grieving over the bodies of their children.

Mr Yeo Eng Yong, 27, had been dating Miss Serena Xie Meng Ling, 17, for about two years when they died in a horrific car accident just after midnight last Saturday. It was one of four accidents on that one day alone, in which five people died.

A car drove into the taxi they were in, at the junction of Indus Road and Ganges Avenue near Great World City.

The impact killed Mr Yeo instantly. Ms Xie was taken to SGH where she died shortly afterwards.

The car driver, a man in his 20s, was later arrested for drink driving. He is now out on bail.

The couple had been on their way to Mr Yeo's home at Indus Road, and were barely a minute from their destination.

Mr Yeo's father and Ms Xie's family had gone to the mortuary later to collect the bodies, and it was there that they met for the first time.

They agreed it wouldn't be necessary to place the couple's ashes next to each other, as they weren't married.

But in life, it was all the two of them wanted - to be together all the time.

It was common for Ms Xie to spend the night at Mr Yeo's flat on Fridays and Saturdays, said his mother, Madam Tan.

'They would come home late at night, greet us, then go to his room and close the door,' she said in Mandarin.

Madam Tan admitted that she was uncomfortable with that, although she was very fond of Ms Xie, and wanted the girl to become her daughter-in-law.

'I told Eng Yong to get engaged fast, or else it's not good for them to spend the night together. But Serena said her parents did not agree to it because she was too young,' she said.

Madam Tan and her husband had never objected to their son's relationship with Ms Xie, although the girl was only 17 and completed her O levels just last month.

SO YOUNG

'I never knew she was so young until reports of their deaths came out in the Chinese papers. I knew she was still studying but I was surprised to read she was still in secondary school.

'My son told me she was about 20, but she looked 22 to me and behaved as if she were older,' the 55-year-old odd-job worker said.

Mr Yeo's father, who is in his 60s, is a cleaner. They have a 16-year-old son as well.

Mr Yeo left school after Sec 4 and worked at fast food outlets before landing a job as a van driver, his mother said.

'He and Serena were very close, they did everything together,' she said, fighting back her tears. She wasn't sure how the couple first met.

'I wanted to meet with her parents and I told my son a few times, but he didn't say anything. Now it is too late...

'His father goes to his room every morning then comes out and cries, but I have to be calm because of my high blood pressure.'

She then broke down: 'We brought up this son until he was 27 and he just died like that'. Ms Xie's mother was surprised when asked if she had objected to her daughter getting engaged so young, .

'I never told her what to do, I felt that they could decide on their own what was best for them. She herself said she was too young.'

Ms Xie has an older brother and a younger sister.

Her mother said that she had welcomed Mr Yeo into her home.

'Serena used to spend the night at his place quite often, but recently she didn't. I don't know why,' she said.

'You've got the wrong mummy'


A woman shouts this warning to 2-year-old son. She claims a stranger holding on to his hand was trying to abduct him

YOU may have got an e-mail that has been going around, quoting a mother recounting a near abduction at Ikea.

And you may have dismissed it as an urban legend, or junk mail.

But guess what? The woman is real, surveillance tapes exist, and events may have happened more or less as she described.

Mary (not her real name) described what happened, early this month.

She was watching her 2-year-old son, who was about 2m ahead of her at the Ikea store on Alexandra Road.

Another woman came along, grabbed the toddler by his wrist, and tried to lead him away.

Mary shouted to her son to alert him: 'You got the wrong mummy'.

QUICKLY WALKED OFF

The woman then abruptly released his hand, smiled at Mary and quickly walked off.

Mary did not want any of her own or her son's personal details revealed so as not to compromise his safety. (See facing report.)

She is convinced she very nearly lost him that day.

'My son... being the restless 2-year-old... tried to struggle out of my grasp. And I did let him walk along some 2-3m ahead of me, within my direct line of sight,' wrote Mary.

'Then one ordinary-looking woman very swiftly overtook my stride, and gently bumped into him. Perhaps this was her strategy to determine if there was any concerned caretaker nearby.'

Then the woman walked alongside the little boy, eventually brushed him on the shoulder, and later on the hand.

When he did not respond, she proceeded to hold him by his wrist.

'Mind you, my son did not hold her hand... When she held his hand, and he looked up and realised it wasn't me, his mother, he slowed to a stop.

'And that woman... picked up her pace, and tried to pull him along. All this was done very calmly, without even looking down at him... She just kept looking straight ahead.'

Although Mary sensed something was wrong, she was not quite sure that a potential abduction was taking place.

Strangely, the woman turned around after a couple of steps to look furtively at the mother and son before resuming her rush away from the scene.

But since then, Mary has been convinced that something bad nearly happened. So much so that she made a police report.

'Come on, what are the chances that a mother of a toddler would hold the wrong child's hand?

'I mean, she had obviously been aiming for him from afar, considering she could so quickly overtake me as I was walking, to chase up to him to keep pace with him.'

The most frightening part for her? That the woman looked like anyone you may meet on the street.

'She looked so ordinary. Chinese, short neat hair, neatly dressed... I thank God I was not busy on the phone or distracted by some Ikea furniture to have lost sight of him,' she wrote.

'It would have been so easy for her to abduct him because he is so friendly with strangers, and worse of all, he's very easily bribeable with food or toys.'

Ikea confirmed they had met Mary regarding the incident.

Ms Angeline Tan, marketing and communications manager of Ikea Singapore, said they had shown her surveillance tapes of an incident that seemed to be what she described in her e-mail.

TAPE GIVEN TO POLICE

'We have since advised her to make a police report, which she has done. We have assisted by turning the tape over to the police and it is now a matter for the authorities.' (See report, facing page).

And Mary does not blame Ikea in any way.

'Ikea was very responsible and quick to react... that's what I call model corporate citizenship,' wrote Mary.

'If anything, Ikea is the safest place to be now... I have never seen such swift action by any one company. I really appreciate their effort and smart thinking.'

Yet, she continues to be shaken by the event. 'Got goosebumps and butterflies in my stomach... just thinking of it, and I can't sleep now,' she wrote.

'Please don't think that it's safe in Singapore. Keep a close watch on your children.'

French policemen hide bomb in passenger's bag at airport during dog-training exercise, but lose track of bag

TRAVEL authorities worldwide are searching for explosives planted inside a passenger's bag.

And the explosives were planted there by policemen.

Sounds 'ridiculous' or even 'scandalous' as French newspapers and officials have called it.

But the fact is, two French police officers have lost explosives they planted in a passenger's bag as part of a sniffer-dog training exercise, reported the BBC and International Herald Tribune.


French authorities have suspended the two dog-handlers.

The 150g of explosives was slipped into the pocket of a random bag during the training exercise at Charles de Gaulle International Airport.

The explosives, if detonated, 'would not be enough to blow up a building' but would probably be enough to blow a door off a car, a police spokesman said.

However, there was no chance the material could go off as it was not connected to a detonator, he said.

'We hope the person who finds this will take it to the local authorities,' said the spokesman for the gendarmerie, France's national police.

'We hope they don't throw it away,' he said on Monday.

The police are working on the assumption that the handphone-sized lump of plastic explosives, left Paris aboard any one of the 90 flights between 5pm and 7pm on Friday, said the spokesman.

French authorities were forced to alert dozens of airlines bound for Italy, Japan, Brazil, the US and various French cities.

The explosives were placed in a zipped compartment of a small, dark blue hold-all on a conveyor belt at the airport as part of a routine test.

One dog detected the package but the police lost sight of the hold-all when they went to pick up a second dog to take part in the security exercise.

France's Interior Minister, Mr Dominique de Villepin, ordered an inquiry on Monday into what he called a 'scandalous' airport security gaffe.

French police have said they will stop using passengers' luggage for training.

No passenger has contacted the French authorities to report discovering the explosives, the police said on Monday.

The US Transportation Security Administration said it was informed about the incident by the French police on Friday.

Three of the flights that could have contained the explosives were bound for Los Angeles and one for New York.

Armed robber escapes with cash from POSBank at West Coast

SINGAPORE : A man made a bold attempt to rob a bank on Friday, and got away with an unspecified amount of cash.
Police say the man entered the POSBank at Block 501 West Coast at about 4pm and used a wooden plank to block the entrance of the bank to prevent others from entering.

There was no security officer at the premises at the time and there were three female customers, four female tellers, and two other staff in the bank.

He was dressed in a blue hooded raincoat and was wearing a surgical mask and dark sunglasses.

Police say he proceeded to counter 2 and grabbed a customer at knifepoint.

He man asked the teller for cash and the teller placed the notes in a plastic bag.

The man, described as about 1.65 metres tall, between 35 and 40 years old, then let go of the victim and swept up the cash.

Police say he fled the scene but left behind the wooden plank, glove and surgical mask.

Reporters found out that the branch is considered a small one, and so does not have 24-hour surveillance.

The bank tellers are apparently specially trained to react to such situations by giving up some bundles of cash so that a robber will leave without harming customers. - CNA

SHAH RUKH KHAN TERSELAMAT DARI SERANGAN BOM


COLOMBO - Bintang-bintang filem Bollywood, yang diketuai seniman terkenal Shah Rukh Khan, bergegas pulang ke India selepas konsert mereka, Temptation 2004, di Sri Lanka berakhir dengan tragedi menyusuli satu serangan bom tangan yang menyebabkan dua orang terbunuh dan 19 cedera, menurut para pegawai semalam.

Menurut polis, bom itu, yang meletup di tempat duduk orang kenamaan, menyebabkan seorang jurugambar bebas berusia 21 tahun dan seorang wanita berusia 25 tahun, kedua-duanya warga Sri Lanka, terbunuh.

'Tiada rakyat India yang dilaporkan cedera selain daripada Cik Rithu Shastri, isteri pemain kriket, Encik Ravi Shastri, yang dipercayai cedera ringan,' kata satu kenyataan pemerintah India.

SALEEM BEKAS PENYANYI IKLIM AMUK DI MAHKAMAH

KUALA LUMPUR - Bekas penyanyi kumpulan Iklim, Saleem, semalam mengamuk di Mahkamah Majistret di sini setelah isterinya, Cik Juliana Bachok, menarik balik jaminan berjumlah RM6,500 ($2,822) bagi dua pertuduhan terhadapnya kerana memiliki dadah.

Saleem, atau nama sebenarnya A.M. Salim Abdul Majid, 43 tahun, menerpa ke arah Cik Juliana tetapi dihalang oleh beberapa anggota polis.

'Terima kasih, Ju... terima kasih... terima kasih... sampai hati kau buat aku macam ini,' katanya sinis sambil menghulurkan tangannya untuk berjabat tangan dengan Cik Juliana, tetapi dihalang polis yang mengheretnya masuk lokap.

Setelah dimasukkan ke dalam lokap, Saleem masih lagi menjerit dengan kuat dan beberapa kali menendang dinding lokap.

Kekecohan itu berlaku di mahkamah yang sepatutnya mendengar perbicaraan kes beliau yang didakwa memiliki satu paket plastik mengandungi campuran heroin seberat 0.06 gram di Jalan Sarawak, Dang Wangi, di sini, sekitar 11.20 pagi pada 29 Februari lepas.

Bagi kes pertama itu, Saleem dibebaskan dengan ikat jamin sebanyak RM3,000 pada 28 April lepas.

Di mahkamah berasingan, Saleem dikejutkan sekali lagi apabila peguamnya, Encik Kamarul Zaman, memaklumkan bahawa isterinya turut menarik balik jaminan berjumlah RM3,500 yang dibayar pada 15 Julai lepas bagi tuduhan memiliki satu tiub straw berisi heroin dengan berat kasar 0.2 gram.

Saleem didakwa melakukan kesalahan itu di Lorong Tunku Abdul Rahman Kiri 1, di sini, sekitar 1 petang pada 14 Julai lalu.

Bagi kedua-dua kes itu, Saleem yang berasal dari Kuala Terengganu, boleh dihukum denda maksimum RM10,000 atau penjara maksimum lima tahun atau kedua-duanya sekali, jika sabit kesalahan.

Kedua-dua kes itu didengar di hadapan Majistret Nazran Mohd Sham, yang membenarkan kedua-dua permohonan tersebut dan menetapkan perbicaraan bagi kes pertama pada 14 Januari depan, manakala bagi kes kedua pula pada 16 dan 17 Februari depan. - Bernama.

Taufik: 'These things make me feel blessed'

At their first solo performances over the weekend, Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah and runner-up Sylvester Sim both showed that they are stars in their own right that they are stars in their own right




EVEN as he was singing onstage, a mak cik (Malay auntie) strode up to him and planted a kiss on his cheek.

The display of open affection was so uncharacteristic of Malay audiences here, it caught Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah by surprise.

'I was shocked (at the kiss),' recalled Taufik, who was singing his first single, I Dream.

He confessed to The New Paper: 'These little things that happen to me make me feel very blessed. There are many good singers out there, but not many get to be in my shoes.'

Despite having won the Singapore Idol title barely two weeks ago, Taufik was, no doubt, the most popular star at MediaCorp Suria's charity show, Iklhas, on Friday night.

He overshadowed veteran Malaysian actress Tiara Jacquelina and Singapore actress Suhaila Salam of Cinta Bollywood fame.

Even one of the show's hosts, Khairuddin Saharom, appealed to people for donations in Taufik's name.

He said he hoped the donations would go up when Taufik came out.

And when Taufik eventually appeared, he sent the girls among the audience screaming. He urged home viewers to call in and make a donation as a birthday gift to him - as it was his 23rd birthday.

Then, several more fans - all females - streamed to the stage without getting stopped. The young ones put their arms around him and even posed for a picture.

Despite the overwhelming response, Taufik, looking suave in a maroon suit, managed to keep his cool.

The other song he sang during the show was Belaian Jiwa, the Malay number he peformed during the Asian Pop Spectacular of the Idol competition.

He may have sung his lungs out, but in the end, he was still no match for the women: The show was a battle of the sexes in which male and female artistes cajoled for donations separately, and the women raised $74,600 from call-in donations during the show.

The men managed $50,910.

Taufik's die-hard fans had queued up early in the morning for a free ticket to the show last week, and the 200 tickets were snapped up within half an hour.

After the show, scores of fans, armed with cameras, quickly rushed out of the MediaCorp theatre and were heard asking: 'Where's Taufik?'

Some of them found him, just as he was leaving the special artiste room. They mobbed him, and even this reporter was elbowed out of the way.

Dozens of other fans, who parked themselves at the MediaCorp reception, did not get a chance to pass him his birthday presents personally.

These fans, who failed to get a ticket to the show, waited for three hours and refused to budge even when told that Taufik had left the building.

Student Dion Lee and a handful of her girlfriends were among them. They had brought birthday cards, teddy bears and even a slice of birthday cake for Taufik.

The 14-year-old said: 'We want to congratulate him. If we don't get to see him, we'll leave the presents at the reception. We'll follow him the next time he has a show.'

It was even harder to get close to Taufik during The SG Hip Hop Festival, held at Hong Lim Park last Saturday.

Four police officers were with him everywhere he went. About 3,000 people turned up for the event.

Many of his fans had waited from as early as 6pm to catch him. Taufik, who was slated to perform in the evening, appeared only after midnight - as the last act.

When his turn came, the concert-goers pushed to the front. The moment Taufik took the stage, the girls started screaming and clicking their cameras. Even the well-known acts - Triple Noize, Teh Tarik Crew and Too Phat - who performed that night, could not elicit that kind of response.

Taufik performed with local band B'vintage Flav'r.

Then, he packed a punch with his solo of Me And Mrs Jones, a song the judges chose for him for the Idol finals, even though the sound system was a letdown.

Taufik told The New Paper: 'There's a lot of pressure on me to perform up to expectations. I'm still learning how to handle this (fame). It's all so surreal. I'm still telling myself, 'Dude, you're the Singapore Idol'.'
