Leeds expose United frailty
I could hardly bear to watch Leeds beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, knowing what the fixture means to both sets of supporters.
Simon Grayson's side are having a great season, and came into the match full of confidence. It was the biggest game of their season and it showed.
They deserved to beat a United team that never really got out of the blocks, and their names will go down in the history of the club. It is what the FA Cup is all about; it always seems to produce an upset.
I think the United team did not have enough players who have played against Leeds and know the significance of the rivalry.
I did not appreciate it fully when I moved to Old Trafford in 1991 until I had played and experienced the atmosphere.
Players like Darron Gibson, Danny Welbeck and Gabriel Obertan will not be able to remember Leeds as a major force in English football - it was the perfect opportunity to start Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes who know what playing against Leeds is all about.
United needed to get their noses in front and take control of the game, but they did not do so and were simply not good enough.
Sir Alex Ferguson gave a fairly blunt assessment of his team's performance afterwards and he will be extremely concerned at their failings both at the front and the back.
Rio Ferdinand has not played for more than two months and there is no knowing when he will return, while Nemanja Vidic has suffered yet another mysterious injury.
Wes Brown thought he was a substitute but got thrown straight in and it showed: he was not properly prepared mentally and was given a torrid time by Jermaine Beckford.
Up front, it doesn't take a genius to see they are missing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. United needed the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen to step up this season and they simply haven't done it.
If Ronaldo had been playing, he would probably have scored. If he hadn't scored, he would have set up a goal. And if he hadn't done that, he would still have had two players marking him.
Ronaldo makes things happen, whereas Owen and Berbatov need things put on a plate for them - and it puts too much strain on Wayne Rooney.
It is nigh-on impossible to replace Ronaldo, but I think the loss of Tevez could be offset by someone like Hulk at Porto.
I like what I have seen of the Brazilian, and he would certainly add some pace and creativity up front.
Tevez always gave 100 per cent, and you could rely on his energy and work-rate even when he was not scoring - Hulk looks a similar player.
The Argentine has a chance to show United what they are missing on Wednesday in a Carling Cup semi-final derby that takes on huge significance following the Leeds debacle.
Sir Alex has promised to ring the changes, and you can be sure United will not take quite such a complacent approach to the City encounter. |

Foster eyes Reds return
05/01/2010 09:07, Report by Ben Hibbs
Ben Foster missed United's festive fixtures with a bad back and flu, but the Reds keeper is keen to provide a helping hand in United's attempt to reach Wembley in the Carling Cup.
The Reds travel to Eastlands on Tuesday 19 January for the rearranged semi-final first leg tie with Manchester City - the original date this Wednesday, of course, has been postponed due to bad weather. The second leg takes place on 27 January at Old Trafford, and Foster hopes to be fit and involved.
“As well as some important league games, we’ve got big cup matches coming up against City,” says Ben. “Like the fans, the lads are really looking forward to it.”
Foster played in the dramatic 4-3 derby win in September, which has whetted the appetite for these cup clashes. However, the England stopper remains unsure what impact that result will have, particularly with new City boss Roberto Mancini providing a fresh start after Mark Hughes' reign.
“People will talk about that game in the build-up, but I’m not sure how much bearing it’ll have on the tie. That result will have hurt City and they'll want revenge, but the bottom line is City always want to beat us, and we want to beat them! We’d love to go to a final again because we want to defend the trophy, and getting to Wembley gives everyone a boost.”
Foster tasted success last term in this competition and is keen to experience it again, even if Tomasz Kuszczak has edged in front in the current pecking order. “I’d like to play my part,” he said. “I was lucky enough to play at Wembley last year and I’d love to do it again. Tomasz has come in and done really well, but hopefully I’ll get a few games soon.” |

Ferguson ready to hand Diouf Man United debut
Manchester United could hand Mame Biram Diouf his debut in the Carling Cup after receiving a work permit and international clearance for the young Senegal striker.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been impressed with the way the 22-year-old has quickly adjusted to life at Old Trafford and has handed his newest recruit the number 32 shirt formerly worn by Carlos Tevez.
"He has adapted very well to our training regime and has looked very impressive," Ferguson told Inside United. "He is quick, very good in the air and a good striker of the ball.
"Overall, he is a really good centre-forward and he will play a part this season."
Diouf was signed from Norwegian club Molde in the summer but has only just been able to link up with the Old Trafford outfit as he was allowed to remain with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's old club on loan until the end of their domestic campaign.

Bologna want Macheda deal, says agent
Federico Macheda's agent says Bologna want to take the young Manchester United striker back to Italy on a loan deal, although he feels it is unlikely to happen.
Empics
Federico Macheda was Manchester United's hero against Aston Villa last season.
Macheda burst onto the scene last year when he scored a stoppage-time winner against Aston Villa on his debut. The teenager then scored again less than a minute into his second match for United as a second-half substitute at Sunderland.
However, Macheda has not made a league appearance this season and Sir Alex Ferguson could consider loaning the 18-year-old out in order to gain more first-team experience.
Serie A strugglers Bologna have made a move for Macheda but agent Giovanni Bia feels the Premier League champions will not agree to a move.
"Bologna have asked for him but we have to evaluate thing with Manchester United," he told Tuttomercatoweb. "This afternoon I have a telephone appointment with them, but it will be difficult for them to let him go.
"If they will do it would be on loan."
Reports have also linked the Italy Under-21 international with a move to Real Zaragoza but Bia insists the Spanish club have not contacted him.
Macheda, a former youth team player at Lazio, moved to United in 2007 and signed a new four-year contract at Old Trafford last December. |

Vidic blow as defence recovers
Sir Alex Ferguson will have the rare luxury of a fully fit back four for the trip to Birmingham on Saturday, although the United boss must do without Nemanja Vidic for up to ten days.
The Serbian visited a specialist on Wednesday for a full diagnosis of the nerve problem down the side of his right leg which ruled him out of the FA Cup third round defeat to Leeds. However, the injury isn't considered serious and Vidic could return for the Carling Cup semi-final, first leg tie with Manchester City at Eastlands on Tuesday 19 January.
“During the warm-up against Leeds, he felt a problem in the nerve,” explained Sir Alex. “It’s something which has been a recent problem for him and he just didn’t feel confident enough to play. I understand that because it’s painful. We sent him to a specialist to get the problem diagnosed and we know what exercises he needs to do now. It’s not a long-term issue and we can control it.”
On Saturday the Reds will still be without first-choice men Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar, who remains in Holland. But Jonny Evans and Wes Brown are both fit and will occupy the two centre-back positions at St. Andrew's against Alex McLeish’s in-form side.
The centre-half situation looks a lot healthier than in recent weeks, however, and it could be significantly bolstered in the next fortnight with Vidic’s impending return and news that Ferdinand is possibly only two weeks away from resuming duties for the first time since defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on 25 October.
Another player making a significant strides towards full recovery is Owen Hargreaves. The midfielder, who has been out for 16 months following double knee surgery, has started training with the Reserves.
