Thanks Shahid, I am slim now: Kareena Kapoor
Last we saw you in Don, what prompted you to make a sensational appearance in the forthcoming KYA LOVE STORY HAI?
Actually the film's director Lovely Singh is a very close friend. I've known him since Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai. Doing the song was a gesture of love and friendship.

And when he explained the concept to me and I heard the song I knew it was going to be a rocking number. I loved it. I've worn the most glamorous clothes, driven a limo and strummed a 25-feet guitar! It doesn't get better!

How was it facing the camera after a year?
What a coincidence! I began my break last year after completing the dance number for Don, and now I have ended my break again with a dance number for Kya Love Story Hai! I was away purely out of choice because I needed to relax and unwind, but now it feels great to be doing what I have always loved doing.

Did you contribute to the song in any way?
Since I am playing myself in the song, I told Lovely that I would not go overboard on the glamour front with any itsy-bitsy costumes. It was my idea to perform in jeans and gorgeous gowns.

Otherwise, it has been the team work of music director Pritam, choreographer Bosco, my dress designer Manish Malhotra, the director Lovely Singh, and Alisha China who has lent her golden voice to this number.

Did you imagine what a huge craze It's Rocking from Kya Love Story Hai would become?
I'm not surprised, when I first heard it, I loved it!

Personally what kind of music do you listen to?
My all time favourites are the old classics from films like Aawara, Chori Chori etc. It's Rocking actually has references to the erstwhile hit, Ude Jab Jab Zulfein Teri!

What are your expectations from your sensational appearance in Kya Love Story Hai?
There are no expectations except that I can experiment with some really glamorous looks. It is a good balance after doing films like Chameli and Omkara where I am deglam. And then there is the additional high of knowing that millions of people out there are going to dance to my moves!

Tell us about your forthcoming projects?
Imtiaz Ali's film with Shahid as my co-star is one I am excited about, then I have Yash Chopra's next with Akshay and Saif, and there is Mani Ratnam's Lajjo with Aamir Khan.

What is the secret of your slim-as-a-reed figure?
I begin the day by doing yoga and that has really helped! And thanks to Shahid (Kapoor) I have turned a vegetarian which has further enhanced my physique!

Any more sensational appearances like the one you've made in Kya Love Story Hai?
You can never tell about life. So never say 'never' !

Preity is staying in Amitabh's room
There are strange and thoroughly uncharitable stories about Mr Bachchan being bandied by guttersnipe snoopers.

According to a source-based slander-story Mr Bachchan made huge demands on the producers of Rituparno Ghosh's English-language film The Last Lear, and even "threatened" not to shoot for the film until he was given the Presidential Suite at a particular luxury hotel in Kolkata.

However the fact is, the presidential suite of the hotel is occupied by the film's leading lady Preity Zinta and not the Big B.

Explains a horrified associate of the Big B, "Of course Mr Bachchan was to be put up in the Presidential suite. He doesn't need to throw a tantrum for that. It is his by right. However when he reached Kolkata for the shoot the presidential suite was occupied by someone else.

Without the least fuss Mr Bachchan quietly took an ordinary suite with an interconnecting room for his valet Pravin who needs to be with him to give his food medicines and so on , on time. And his makeup man is not staying at the same hotel. He's been put up in a much less expensive hotel."

The presidential suite is now occupied by Preity Zinta. "She arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday for her second schedule. By then the presidential suite was vacant , and we asked Mr Bachchan if he'd like to move into it. He said he was comfortable where he was , so Preity is now occupying the presidential suite."

Director Rituparno Ghosh neck-deep in work is horrified at the false story about AB's alleged demands. "Far from making demands Amitda is the epitome of co-operation. I've never seen such fierce dedication and passion in anyone. I wish every actor in this country would learn the meaning of commitment and dedication from him. After The Last Lear I want to make at least a dozen films with him."

Bipasha has the best butt: Mallika
Besides Mani Rathnam's Guru, if one has to find a common link between Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat it would have to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali. During last season's Koffee With Karan, Sanjay appeared with Aishwarya.

This season he'll be seen with Mallika Sherawat. The totally unforeen pairing happened on when the enterprising Karan shot another episode of Koffee with Bhansali and Sherawat.

Says a member of the tightly-knit crew. "At the first the two were wary of each other, and rightly so. What could there be in common between them? Luckily, Karan's characteristic affability soon put them at ease. Mallika was obviously awestuck 卆nd nervous. Sanjay put her at ease by telling her he was a far cry from his sober serious image and that he loved having fun."

Once the camera was switched on the thressome had a ball. Repartees flew fast and furiously. "Sanjay surprised Mallika by telling her he always found her to be one of the most promising new discoveries, though she needed to work on her voice modulation. He also gently reminded her to get back to earth when she spoke about her superiority complex."

Apparently the vibes on the sets were ribtickling with the two super-filmmakers often laughing uproariously at Mallika's selfdeclarations.

Divulges the source, "At one point Mallika high-handedly declares that she would like the three Khans Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman to serve her meals. And when Karan cockily asks her which hero's butt she likes best, Mallika changes the topic to female butts and declares she likes Bipasha butt best."

Butt, seriously.

When asked about this extremely unorthox tete-a-tete featuring the genius filmmaker and the femme fatale, Karan laughed, "I don't know who gives you all this information. But yes, we did shoot with my favourite filmmaker and and one of the sexiest actresees.

It was great fun. As I said earlier I don't only want to bring on unusual and exciting guests, I want to bring them on in unexpected combinations. I believe opposites make sparks fly. Watch out for the fireworks this season on Koffee With Karan."

Aishwarya Rai is dignity-personified

Rumours regarding her supposed unhappiness about the length of her role in Mani Rathnam's Guru has Vidya Balan utterly flummoxed.

"I can't even begin to imagine where these rumours started. Do these people realize what getting a Mani Rathnam film means to someone who started her career barely two years ago? Forget questioning the length of my role, I'd have walked through one frame and left if Mani Rathnam asked me to.

I got into Guru with my eyes wide open. And I'm very very happy being part of Guru. According to me there're no first leads and second leads in a Mani Rathnam film. Everyone is a character, period."

The rumours of her displeasure gathered momentum when Vidya failed to turn up for the music event of Guru. "That was a totally unavoidable circumstance. When I was told the event was on 5 th November I immediately informed them it was impossible for me to be there.

I had already committed myself to a very important family function, and that too outside Mumbai. There was no way I could make it back in time for the Guru event. Kuch to log kahenge. I either focus on my work spend time fighting the rumours."

She sighs at the memory of Guru's shooting. "It was one the most happy and comfortable shootings I've ever gone through. It was so relaxed. The way Mani works there's no real stress on the sets. Though most of my scenes are with Madhavan, I had a couple of scenes with Abhishek, and one scene with Ash.

But Ash and I kept meeting on the sets. Abhishek is a livewire, lots of fun to shoot with. And Ash is dignity-personified. As for Madhavan, I've known him from long before, from my modeling days.

In fact I was supposed to do a South Indian film with him at one time. We finally worked together. He's a great guy. But more than Maddy I liked his wife Sarita and his son Vedant. "

Vidya is often accused of having changed. 'She as acquired an attitude,' a young director told me.

"That surprises me," she smiles. "I've always made a conscious attempt to remain unaffected by the ups and downs in my career. A teacher once wrote in my autograph book, 'It's always easier to be what you want to be than to be what other people want you to be. Makes life so much easier.'

So far I've not become selfconscious about the demands on me. But yes. I'm a person who likes to do her own thing. A lot of people think I'm stubborn. So be it. I don't think it's wise to do something just because it's expected of you. Because if you do it once you end up doing it all the time."

Two hits old, and Vidya is all set for two more. "I was lucky that Parineeta and Lage Raho Munnabhai were good films. Lage Raho

I am going to sue them now: Shilpa
Shilpa's elation at her international triumph vanishes when she speaks about the two people Bobby Khan and Jazz Barton who allegedly exploited her name, position as the Big Brother winner to make illegal deals on her behalf.

Shilpa is a mixture of grief and indignation. "They've completely taken advantage of the fact that I wasn't allowed to speak to the press after I came out of Big Brother. Yes, I'm filing a defamation case against them. I believe in doing what's right. I considered Bobby a friend."

At the same time Shilpa acknowledges Bobby's hand in her current status. " I never denied that the Big Brother Deal came through him. I give him complete credit for that. I paid 6,000 pounds to Jazz. She was the common factor between and Endemol(the company that produced Big Brother)."

She's frank enough to admit others were approached first for Big Brother. "They wanted a Bollywood actor. They first approached a couple of other actors. Then finally I did it. The next thing I know, when I come out of Big Brother Jazz had signed a huge deal on my behalf with British paper The Sun! How could she?

! Nobody has the power of attorney to do that. I've the best PR people and agent in Britian, people who've handled Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and David Beckham. Who are Bobby and Jazz springing into the picture to claim they're my agents? They just want to make a quick buck."

Shilpa accuses Jazz of making a fool of herself on the BBC. "These are people who've called themselves my friends. They're now shaming me and my country. What will people think?

I was saddened by his loose statements Bobby made about my family and about my mother in particular. How dare he even think of speaking like that about her?! I was very hurt."

The hurt to the family precipitated the legal action. "I can't take any slander against my family. Hit out at me, not my family. Even money out of the last instalment I got for Big Brother has gone to Jazz's account.

I haven't stopped that. I don't know how they can claim that Shilpa duped them. We don't belong to that class of people who deprive others of their rightful money."

Vidya & Shahid's picture shocked us
Until he had a photo-session done with Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan Aziz Mirza thought he had found the new-millennium Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla pair for his new film.

But the camera doesn抰 lie, the resulting photographs showed a stark age difference between the two, with Vidya looking considerably older than her hero.

This has posed serious problems for, gone are the days when Mala Sinha sported pigtails to look well-matched with Amitabh Bachchan in Sanjog and when Shah Rukh Khan, keen to have at least one film with Sridevi in his repertoire, pasted a moustache on his face.

This time, Mirza had to find another way of filling in the distinct age difference between his hero and heroine and the best way was to change Vidya's character around and make her older than Shahid in the film too.

A source says, "This decision was taken after a photo-session with Shahid and Vidya, which showed a stark age difference between the two."

Sushmita in and as Jhansi Ki Rani

"This is the kind of year that I look forward to," says Sushmita about her big plans for 2007.

Sushmita is all set to turn a producer in a big way. "It isn't a random decision. Nor have I come to this decision only to accommodate myself as an actor. But yes, there's a definite economic and creative method to my plans to go into film production."

One of her foremost plans as a producer is make one of her dreams come true. "I've always wanted to play Jhansi Ki Rani. And I don't see my vision being translated to screen by any other producer. For my interpretation of the ultimate warrior queen I need to create a situation conducive to a free-flowing creativity."

At the moment Sushmita is in serious closed-door discussions with her script writers. She hopes to zero-in on a director (one of the top names in show business) in the next couple of months.

"Every actor has a dream role. Mine is Jhansi. I've always created a situation where I can make my dreams come true. This is my chance to play the one historical character that I most closely empathize with."

She said wants to make the movie herself because she had a definite vision of how to portray Lakshmibai.

Sushmita added that she would appoint a director in a couple of months, and is likely to begin shooting later this year.

I feel I'm losing a son: Preity Zinta
Spunk is synonymous with Preity Zinta. At the age of 12 she lost her father. Barely into Bollywood she took on the underworld mafia.

But nothing prepared her for the loss of a dear one last week.

Preity 's birthday on Wednesday was a very subdued affair. "I'm going through rather trying times. My dog Junior is dying. I've been in and out of hospital with him, seeing to his blood transfusion, etc. He has been very very ill for the past few days.

I feel I'm losing a son! So there's no question of celebrations this year. I told all my friends that we're putting the birthday on hold while I just sit with my dog and hope to see him go as painlessly as possible."

Not a very nice way to spend one's birthday. "I know. These things can't be helped. But I do intend to buy myself a really nice gift later. And my friends can wait."

And how does it feel to be a year older? "I feel wiser. I see the difference in myself between what I used to be at 17 and what I am now. You could say my decision to pitch in for the Mumbai Municipal elections this year was a result of that maturation. Earlier perhaps civic matters in Mumbai wouldn't have mattered so much to me. But now they do."

However Preity quickly adds, "This doesn't mean I'm turning to politics. Please! I'm a totally apolitical person. I just went out and told people about how important a clean and healthy Mumbai is, that's it. Beyond that I'm not interested in politics I'm not affiliated to any party."

Kissing Celina left Aftab Red-faced!
Aftab Shivdasani was extremely nervous the day he had to do his very first kissing scene in his film Red opposite Celina Jaitley. Aftab even stopped his girlfriend Yana Gupta from coming to the sets that day.

A very understanding Yana Gupta says, "I was supposed to drop in that day and I knew he was going to enact some hot scene. This was the very first time he was doing a kissing scene in any film and it's quite natural that he would be conscious about it and not want his girlfriend around."

She continues, 揑抦 happy he's done it. It's important to understand that this is an inseparable part of our profession and it would be only stupid to feel jealous; only people who are insecure about themselves and their relationship would feel threatened by a screen kiss.

You cant and don抰 build a relationship based only on all this anyway, so why give it so much importance?"

Yana is happy about the way Aftab's career is progressing, "Knowing Aftab, on an impulse he would have rejected doing the scene but it's good for him as he is changing his image and this film finally shows him in a different light.

He's shaved off his head, changed his look and is looking much different and is prepared for different roles. He is no more just the cute guy but a handsome man and this movie will put that across, and I definitely encourage him in every aspect."

Vidya denies rift with Aishwarya Rai
On Jan 1 Vidya Balan turned a year older.

"It's good to have your birthday on 1 Jan. No one can claim to forget the date," Vidya laughs. "Not that I intended to have a big party or anything. My birthday started as usual at midnight with pooja at home. The day was spent with family and friends. Why should that change?"

Vidya is content with 2006. "After Parineeta I needed to consolidate my position. Lage Raho匨unnabhai did that for me. Hopefully 2007 will start for me on an auspicious note when Salaam-e-Ishq and Eklavya release."

Vidya has been shooting hard. Now it's time for her to shoot down rumours about a rift with Aishwarya Rai during the making of Mani Rathnam's Guru.. "By now I've gotten used to all kinds of link-ups and rumours. But this one truly takes the cake.

I can't say we got along like a house on fire simply because we didn't have that many scenes together. But whenever we worked together Aishwarya was a dream co-star卆n absolute delight, and someone I look up to. To even suggest that she had my role cut is so ridiculous.

I was aware of the extent of my role from the start. I did Guru for the pleasure of working with Mani. There're moments in the film where Aishwarya needed to reach out to me emotionally. She did it so naturally and spontaneously she won me over."

A story doing the rounds suggests that Vidya didn't attend the Candian premiere of Guru because of Ms Rai.

Vidya's melodious giggle fills the air. "This is too much. I wonder who's spreading such nonsense, and for what purpose! I was in Australia shooting for Sajid Khan's Hey Baby on 10 Jan. The premiere of Guru was in Canada on the 12th.

There was no way I could reach there and get back to my shooting without disrupting Sajid's schedule. I wouldn't do this to anyone, least of all Sajid Khan who's a first-time director and a dear friend."

She takes a deep breath and ends, "I hope this puts to rest all these silly speculations about Aishwarya's role in my life. She's way above all this petty politics. Her dignity in the face of adversity is exemplary. If I can possess even a fraction of her poise I'd consider myself lucky."

A Beautiful Wife & Dutiful Bahu, Ash!
Even as the engagement announcement pervaded the electronic and print media, both Abhishek and Aishwarya chose to maintain a discreet distance from and a deafening silence on the matter.

While Abhishek flew off the next morning with his mother Jaya to Rajasthan for the shooting of Goldie Behl's Drona Aishwarya chose to be with her family on Monday before heading for Karjat to shoot for Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha-Akbar, thereby leaving all the subsequent details including the wedding date to the parents.

Says a close family friend, "It's almost like an arranged narriage, with love thrown in. We all knew Abhishek and Ash were getting close to one another for a long time. But neither spoke about it. And since they're very private people we thought it unwise to probe beyond a point. We just let their relationship take a natural course. We're genuinely happy to discover that the two of them have decided to be together."

But their hands-off attitude has surprised many. "Ash has made it very clear to her parents that all marriage details will be decided by her parents. The same goes for the Bachchans. For a while now, Ash has been a dutiful bahu at their residence, so much so that Jayaji has completely warmed up to her and has been telling friends for a while that Ash will fit wonderfully into their household."

Now both the parties in the biggest wedding of the year are waiting for the parents to get together and select a date.

Says a close friend of Ash, "Her Dad is out of town. As soon as he returns in a couple of days he'll be meeting up with Mr Bachchan to decide a date. Both the families are eager to lock in on a date for the wedding."

Sushmita stuns Ram Gopal Verma
There's a new and absolutely irreversible mutual -admiration club brewing between Ram Gopal Varma and Sushmita Sen on the sets of Sholay.

So taken up is the prolific director with Sushmita's performance as the widow Devi The role that Jaya Bachchan played in the original Sholay) that he intends to cast her again as soon as he finds the right vehicle for her.

Says Ramu, "I always knew Sushmita was a superb actress. She has immense intelligence and she understands the medium fully. Now directing her I feel she has brought to the widow's role the kind of quiet wisdom and sensitivity which I've never seen before.

Sushmita's scenes with her screen brother-in-law Mohanlal are among the highlights of Sholay. So far she has mostly played talkative characters. But Sholay prove silences are Sushmita's forte."

Sushmita is equally enthused by Ramu's work-modalities. "It's a dream-come-true for me. Working with him is like finally being directed. I just love that man's creative energy. Ramu is one director I've waited to work with him.

I've pestered him repeatedly to work together. Even when I was doing Vastu Shastra for his production house I told Ramu that's not what I wanted. I wanted to be directed by him. Now I finally have a chance to be directed by him in Sholay. I could write a book on the way Ramu deals with actors.

It's amazing he has a unit of hundreds of people and he knows only one guy's name on the set. That's how focused he is. That one guy has to know exactly what Ramu wants from all the others on the set."

And now Ramu is looking for the first opportunity to cast Sushmita again. "The problem is, she can't be cast in any ordinary role."

Mallika's grand walk-out on Stage
The nation and its favourite tv channel gawked when Mallika Sherawat staged a walk-out in the middle of her performance on New Year's eve at the Mariott in Mumbai.

The events organizer Ali Morani who got Mallika the lucrative deal feigns ignorance at what transpired in the glam-studded night.

Says Morani, "Yes, I got Mallika the deal. But beyond that I really don't know what happened."

However a source close to Mallika has the entire story to tell. "It was a clear breach of contract, and not on Mallika's part. According to the contract only ten seconds of her performance on stage that evening were meant to be televised.

This is to say, Mallika was clearly given to understand that the brief 10-second footage would be used for news clippings, etc. When she realized that going against the contract, the whole show was being telecast, she simply walked out."

What about the the feee paid to her? Does Mallika have to refund the amount? "Not at all! It was her hosts who breached the contact. Not Mallika. Why should she return the money?" reasons the source.

Aishwarya Rai is being hounded!
The Rais are extremely amused and somewhat exasperated by media reports claiming that a clarification has been issued about the supposedly drunken bodyguard's supposedly high-handed conduct at the Pushkar temple last week when the actress paid a visit there.

"No such clarification has been issued," laughs a very dependable source, "Because no incident happened at the Pushkar temple. The entire episode is as fabricated as the priest at the Madurai temple who's supposed to have seen Ash and Abhishek exchange garlands.

We challenge the priest to come forward and please tell us when the two exchanged garlands. The Pushkar incident is again an example of the hounding that Ash and her family have been facing throughout 2006."

Explaining the true picture isn't easy. But a close friend of Aishwarya tries her best to put the matter into a perspective. "Look, Ash has been visiting temples and dargah for years now. It's her habit to visit religious places wherever she is shooting.

Since Ashutosh Gowariker's schedule in Rajasthan for Jodha-Akbar was over, Ash decided to visit the temple and dargah before leaving the place. She has been doing the same during all her outdoor shootings. Why is such a big deal being made if she visited a dargah or a temple this time?

Why attribute hidden meanings and agendas to such simple and gestures? Ash tried to keep her visit to the holy places as low-profile as possible. What can she do if everything she does gets blown out of all proportions?'

There's much distress among the actress' friends and family over her constant media-association with Abhishek Bachchan. Ash's close friends feel she has been hounded throughout 2006.

"There's more to her than whom she's seeing. Ash is keeping quiet. That's her nature. But she's far from amused by all the speculation about her life," says a source very close to Ash.

"Even the issue about someone sending her money in an envelope from South Africa was blown out of all proportions. She had no knowledge of the man or his money. She did whatever was required by the law.

And now nearly two months have passed. When the authorities are aware of the identity of the person who sent her the money why hasn't anything been done to question him?"

Will Aishwarya Rai stop exposing in Hindi Movies?

It's a well known fact that Aishwarya Rai is getting married to Abhishek Bachchan. It is also well known that Aishwarya stills rules over the box-office in India. With the news of Aishwarya getting hitched, it will be closely watched what kinds of movies does Aishwarya sign up now.

Will she only do movies with Abhishek? Will she keep it in the family and star only in movies with Amitabh, Abhishek or Jaya ji. It was widely reported in the media that Aishwarya's kissing scene with Hrithik did not go down well with the bachchans. Does that mean there will be no more intimate scenes from her in the futer movies? It could also mark the end of Aishwarya exposing at all in movies, period. Whatever's the case, we along with her millions of fans hope that her marrinage will not slow her down in her movie career. Here's cheers to their wedding on Apr 19th!
